UNIVERSITY OF SAN FRANCISCO HIRES BRADY IRELAND AS HEAD COACH

After years and years of disappointment, the University of San Francisco has decided to keep the disappointment train rolling. Rather than finally make a splash and hire a coach that can turn the program around, USF has decided to go with their top candidate Brady Ireland.

Ireland, 27 years old, has only two years of coaching experience under his belt. Both years came at an underachieving Wofford team in a poor conference. Ireland has never taken a team to a post season game and really has nothing to show for his two years of coaching. The only upside seems to be his recruiting skills. When he took over at Wofford, he managed to create a monster recruit class of all three star recruits, but skipped out on their progress when USF came calling after last season.

Touted as a five-star All-American out of high school, Ireland blew out his ACL in the North Carolina State Championship game and never recovered from it. At that point, he was committed to playing for his idol Roy Williams at UNC, but never found playing time due to the devastating injury. Ireland is a student of the game, and served as an assistant at UNC for three years after graduation before taking his first Head Coaching gig at Wofford.

Ireland plans on running a similar style offense as he did at Wofford which includes running-and-gunning and dumping the ball down low to monsters under the hoop. Team chemistry is a major priority for Brady and he prefers to bring in a recruiting class that will play together for all four years. It seems a little bit of the Roy Williams recruiting magic rubbed off on Ireland during his time at North Carolina, and hopefully will keep working here in San Francisco.

Pre-Season Update

PRE-SEASON UPDATE: IRELAND ALREADY MAKING MOVES

Perhaps we judged him too harshly when he first signed, but he still has yet to coach a game. Brady Ireland used his recruiting prowess to land Junior College stud Isaiah Heard just after signing. This is Ireland's first 5-Star recruit ever, and the only on the Don's roster. Ireland also managed to snag a walk on big man in Bingo Bass. USF now has three incoming Freshman that project to be starters. Along side Heard will be Bingo Bass, Fab Cantrell and Stan Vargas. Coach Ireland has forwarded this year's roster and schedule below.

The West Coast Conference looks to be locked up by the perennial powerhouse Gonzaga Bulldogs. The so called experts are projecting the Dons will finish 7th of 8 this year, only better than Santa Clara. It will be interesting to see if Ireland can have a breakout season this year in the seemingly wide-open conference battle for second place. Ireland has never had a 20 win season or a conference championship, coaching his Wofford teams to 18-13 and 17-12 records in his two seasons as head coach.

The Dons came out hot in their home opener and were in the lead and in control for all 40 minutes. Junior College pickup and new addition Isaiah Heard announced himself to the NCAA in a big way, leading all in scoring with 31 points.

Heard scored early and scored often in this one-sided route. The most amazing part of his performance was that it was all accomplished in only 25 minutes of court time. The Dons held a big lead going into the half, and the starters did not see much playing time after adjustments. Heard went 13-20 from the field and ended the day with 31 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals while only coughing the ball up twice and committing one personal foul.

Feeding off of Heard's great play were big men Stan Vargas, Bingo Bass, and even bench man Cole Dickerson. The Vikings simply had no answer for the Dons, and USF was scoring at will from the paint. Vargas had a great game for a starting Freshman, ending with 20 points and 3 rebounds. Bass, the walk on, also had a great first career game contributing his first double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds in addition to his 6 assists.

"I know nobody was really all that thrilled when I was hired just a few short months ago," Coach Ireland said after the game, "But I think our play speaks for itself. We were really able to do what we wanted to do out there today. We pushed the ball, we pounded it down low, and we were able to make some outside shots when the defensive pressure was too much. Isaiah really put on a show out there tonight and I am glad he decided to come join this Dons team. Now we look ahead to a much better team in Utah State and see what we can learn from this game going forward. It is just the first game, but I am very confident in this team and very impressed with what I saw today."

The Dons next game is at home again, this time versus Utah State. The Aggies travel to San Francisco for their first game of the season. With three sophomore guards coming back from last year, the Dons will have to guard the perimeter very well against this potent attack.

Thanks. I had one going on here a while back but I made it to the big time and with the sliders I was using was just absolutely destroying teams. So I ended up getting bored with it. Hopefully this time I'll keep with it. I forget how good this game is until I start playing it again... who would have thought after all these years a sports came could still be this great!

It used to be on the dynasty table page somewhere on here, but I just copied it in from an old post of mine and changed it from there.

The Dons came out flat today after their big win late last week. Utah State took over the game right away, racing off to a 20-3 lead. A furious Ireland could be heard disciplining his players for turnovers and bad shots. The diamond in the rough and the spark that lit the fire was freshman walk-on Bingo Bass.

Bass was an absolute animal on the floor in his 32 minutes of play racking up 29 points and 8 rebounds. Aggie's Ryan O'Sullivan was in foul trouble early, but even when put back into the game Bingo gave him a fit. O'Sullivan eventually fouled out, letting Bass add to his scoring total while closing out the day.

"Its a great thing when your young players really get going," Ireland said after the game. "Heard wasn't having a very good day shooting, I think he was 0-7 from deep or something absurd like that, but Bass was cleaning up the boards and putting back in the easy buckets. We are very fortunate to have such a great player as a walk on, a kid who wasn't heavily recruited but decided coming here was his best option and really just lighting it up tonight."

Freshman power forward Stan Vargas also had himself another solid game. Vargas is averaging 17.3 PPG after his 14 point 7 rebound performance. If the bigs keep up their hard work under the bucket, the assist machine Steeley and slasher Heard look to round out the team very well.

The Dons next game is at home against the Long Beach State 49ers. The 49ers are 1-1 so far this season and with a very well rounded lineup, looks to be a good matchup for the Dons. With San Francisco having such good play out of their big men thus far, it will be interesting to see how they match up against Senior powerhouse T.J. Robinson, who is averaging 14 points and 10 rebounds a game.
