South Carolina State Student Courier, Sports Edition

The Bulldogs win three in a row at home.

The Boys in Red knocked off Florida A&M (11-0), Coppin State (8-14), and Morgan State (7-16) in a row at home. The Bulldogs won handily in each contest beating down their MEAC opposition with a fierce long range air strike lead by Junior star Everett Spencer who scored 25, 40 and 32 respectively. It was a god way for SCST to start off the month of February with three big conference wins to stay undefeated and in 1st play by 4 games. However not all was perfect, sophomore guard Jason Flagler has been sidelined with an abdomen strain and will not play for 3 weeks and could miss 2 weeks of practice. He was already at a reduced role because of Senior Derrick Davis' superior performance but should take the time off to get back into a good swing for the conference tournament.

Florida A&M vs. SCST

Final score South Carolina State 63, FAMU 53

Key Players:

SCST
Burton 10 points, 9 assist
Bennett 8 points, 4 steals, 3 assist
Spencer 25 points, 7 rebounds

Coppin State vs SCST

Final Score: SCST 95, CPU 55

Key Players:
Burton 27 points, 11 assist
Bennett 13 points
Spencer 40 points, 4 rebounds, 2 blocks

Morgan State vs SCST

Final Score: MSU 54, SCST 97

Key Players:
Burton 13 points, 8 assist, 5 steals, 3 rebounds
Bennett 25 points, 4 steals
Spencer 32 points

SCST is now 19-6(11-0).

South Carolina State Student Courier, Sports Edition

The Bulldogs lose first conference game but bounce back to beat A&T.

The Bulldogs were finally beaten in conference play by Norfolk State 80-78. After leading the game for 38 minutes of play the Spartans rallied to tie the game at 70 points a piece. They then stole the inbounds pass and hit a clutch three to put the Bulldogs in a tough spot. Tired and weak, fatigue finally caught the Bulldogs as they were forced to foul to keep the Spartans from scoring again but Norfolk State did not miss from the time and SCST's final shot by Forward David Cobb fell short after he beat his man to the foul line but could not make the 10 footer. The Bulldogs knocked off NC A&T at the Smith-Hammonds arena but didn't blow them out, a poor shooting night almost had the Bulldogs two conference loses back to back.

Norfolk State vs. SCST

Final score South Carolina State 78, NFS 80

Key Players:

SCST
Bennett 4 points, 3 assist
Spencer 36 points, 3 rebounds
Burton 16 points, 2 assist

Burton 20 points, 4 assist

Cobb 9 points, 7 rebounds

End of Season Recruiting Update:

As the season winds down recruiting ends to give the teams time to focus on their conference tournaments and post season play. This is how the season long recruiting has gone for SCST.

*** PF Jamie Temple
6'9 Atlanta, GA
Class #423
Pos #87

One of the best PF in the South east, between him and 5 star Patrick Day. Excellent in the block, great low post moves, and almost automatic scoring inside. He can also knock down the 3 when needed. An average rebounder, his strong suit is his defense and blocking skills. Could go anywhere from a mid major to a small school.

*** SG Jaron McFadden
6'2 Columbus, GA
Class #348
Pos #100

Silky smooth off guard can play the 1 or the 2 if needed. He can run the court with the best or pop the 3 if needed. Play style is a lot like Ty Lawson but doesn't have the playmaking abilities. He will find a good home in the Mid Major conferences.

A very athletic swingman who can do it all from the triple threat position. He really excels when he is given the ball in the corner because he can drive and dunk or dish it to the top for a good look. He pulls a double team each night when he is on and is a great rebounder even following his own shot for many put backs.

Bulldogs blow A&T out in the semi-finals of the MEAC Tournament, 92-62.

With style, grace, and utter dominance the Bulldogs of South Carolina State will advance to the MEAC championship riding on the hot hands of Conference Player of the Year Everett Spencer and freshman Carrio Bennett. A&T looked hopeless and lost as the score at halftime was anything but flattering with the Aggies down more than 20 points at 44 to 20. The Bulldogs never let up as the held the lead of 50 to 22 within minutes of the second half. The Bulldogs will play Winston-Salem state in the MEAC final.

Stats:

Cobb 2 points, 7 rebounds
Carter 2 points, 4 rebounds, 3 blocks

Re: Rob Stone, the next big thing.

South Carolina State Student Courier, Sports Edition

South Carolina State upsets #4 Maryland, 85-76.

"Easily the best performance of the year, and anyone who doubts us can now sit down. This game was about who wanted it more, at the start we all felt like their early 12-3 run was the end of us but we had a quick time out and we looked into each others eyes and I saw the first and next thing I know the score is 21-21 and both teams are battling. They were deeper than us but we had the heart. Bennett put on a shooting exhibition that left most of their team on the bench and Everett hit a windmill dunk with 1:12 left in the game to add a dagger to their coffin. If we play each game like that it will be hard for us to lose in this tournament."

Stats:
Burton 10 points, 7 assist, 1 rebounds
Bennett 30 points, 3 steals, 2 rebounds
Spencer 23 points, 11 rebounds, 4 steals
Cobb 4 rebounds (injured in the first half, but will play in second round)
Carter 6 points, 4 rebounds, 2 blocks

Bench:
Davis 5 points, 3 assist, 1 rebounds
Carn 6 points, 5 rebounds, 1 block
Flagler 5 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assist

*Edited to add I will be playing all NCAA tournament games on MOP*
