The Oakland A's swept the San Francisco Giants
in the 1989 World Series, which took place at
San Francisco's Candlestick Park,
but the celebration was subdued.
Just before the start of Game 3 on October 17,
a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck, collapsing part
of the upper level on the Bay Bridge and the entire
Double Decker Cypress Structure on Interstate 880,
in Oakland, Ca. I grew up in Oakland and I was in
this earthquake, it was horrifying, but had the
World Series not been going on that day, there would
have been A LOT more fatalities because there would
have been a lot more motorists on these 2 structures.

truck sat unscathed. One of a series of photos that also won the

wow, when the upper deck collapsed, it cut right through the lower deck as well!

wow, you can actually see the person in the car, imagine
how freaked out they must have been.

Did anyone attend the World Series on this day?
what was left of it rather...? the game was in warm-up
when the quake hit at 5:04pm,
coincidentally featuring
both of the Bay Area's MLB teams, the Oakland Athletic's
and the San Francisco Giants. Because of game-related
sports coverage, this was the first major earthquake in
America to have its initial jolt broadcast live on television
