Carl Yastrzemski went 3-5, including an insurance solo HR in the 9th, to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 7-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Opening Day at Comiskey Park. Butch Hobson doubled home the first two runs of the game in the top of the 2nd and was followed by a 2-run single by Jerry Remy to get the scoring going. After being down 5-0 going into the bottom of the 5th, Pryor hit a 2-run triple and then Molinaro doubled him home as the Pale Hose got on the board. Dick Drago received credit for the win after coming in for Mike Torrez in the bottom of the 5th. Torrez left the game due to a strained back muscle and was placed on the 15-day DL following the game.

Dennis Eckersley pitched 7 innings allowing only 1 run on 6 hits to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 5-3 win over the Chicago White Sox. Fred Lynn went 3-4, including a pair of doubles, to lead the hitters. Dwight Evans clouted a 2-run HR in the top of the 4th inning to give Boston a 3-0 lead. The White Sox had a late rally in the 9th as they scored two runs in the bottom of the 9th on an RBI double by Nordhagan followed by and error by Butch Hobson which allowed Nordhagen to score. Bob Stanley then settled down and got Lamar Johnson to ground into a double play and pinch hitter Ralph Garr to tap a grounder in front of the plate to end the game.

Rich Wortham scattered 3 hits through 8 innings in shutting down Boston's offense as Rich Hinton came on to pitch a scoreless 9th as the Chicago White Sox blanked the Boston Red Sox, 1-0 to capture the final game of their weekend series. Bobby Bonds provided all the scoring as he crushed a solo HR in the bottom of the 2nd off Bill Lee.

- San Diego officials and Dave Winfield shook hands on a $6,624,000 deal today. The extension will keep him from becoming a free agent for at least 3 years.
4/09 - Sportswriters and pundits hailed San Francisco's signing of Gary Lavelle, one of the major league's brightest stars, as a pivital move. While the deal is certain to raise a few eyebrows, he is expected to earn every bit of the $1,931,000 promised him over 3 years.

Rick Wise hurled a 2-hit shutout as he led the Cleveland Indians to a 5-0 win over the Boston Red Sox. Cleveland opened the scoring with a solo run in the bottom of the 1st on an RBI double by Andre Thornton. John Grubb drove in a run in the 3rd with a double, followed by an RBI triple by Kuiper in the 4th and a 2-run HR by Mike Vail in the 5th to complete the scoring.

Wayne Garland threw 3 no-hit innings and went 9 innings allowing 2 runs and 4 hits as he led the Cleveland Indians to a 3-2 win over the Boston Red Sox in 12 innings. Boston opened the scoring with a 2-run triple by Jerry Remy in the top of the 5th before Cleveland answered back with 2 runs of there own in the bottom half on RBI singles by Duane Kuiper and Jim Norris. Mike Vail sent the fans home happy with an RBI single in the last of the 12th off losing pitcher Bill Campbell.

Fred Lynn went 3-4 and drove in 4 runs, 3 of them with a bases loaded triple in the bottom of the 6th as the Boston Red Sox won the home opener, 6-2, over the Texas Rangers. Dennis Eckersley picked up his second win of the season as he pitched 8 innings allowing 1 run on 5 hits before giving way to Dick Drago to pitch the 9th.

Fergie Jenkins pitched a complete game but allowed Jim Rice to send the home fans home happy as Rice crushed a 2-run HR in the bottom of the 9th as Boston defeated the Texas Rangers, 2-1. Claudell Washington drove in the Rangers' only run with a solo HR in the top of the 8th to give Texas a 1-0 lead until Rice's heroics in the bottom of the 9th.

Carl Yastrzemski went 2-4, including a 3-run HR in the bottom of the 8th, to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 13-3 win over the Texas Rangers to sweep the 3-game weekend series. Boston opened the scoring with a 2-run double by Carlton Fisk in the 1st and Bernie Carbo scoring on a double play in the 2nd. Texas came back with 2 runs in the 3rd on an RBI single by Mike Ivie and an RBI ground out by Mike Hargrove. Pat Putnam hit a solo HR in the top of the 6th then the Red Sox exploded for 5 runs in each of the 7th and 8th innings for the winning margin.

Rusty Staub of the Minnesota Twins was named AL Player of the Week as he batted .458 with 2 HRs and 9 RBIs.
Ted Simmons of the St.Louis Cardinals was named the NL Player of the Week after batting .500 with 4 HR and 7 RBIs.

- The Chicago Cubs have sent 26-year old 3b Steve Ontiveros to the St.Louis Cardinals in exchange for 25-year old reliever Pete Vuckovich.
4/15 - The Toronto Blue Jays have parted ways with 26-year old ss Bob Bailor, sending him to the Houston Astros for 27-year old starting pitcher Vern Ruhle.

Jim Wright scattered 7 hits, allowing 1 run and striking out 8, and went the distance in pitching the Boston Red Sox to a 3-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. Butch Hobson had a 2-run double in the bottom of the 2nd to start the scoring and Dwight Evans added another run with an RBI single in the bottom of the 8th. Milwaukee avoided the shutout bid with Larry Hisle's solo HR in the 9th.

Gorman Thomas went 1-4 with a 2-run HR in the 1st as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Boston Red Sox in 10 innings, 5-4. Boston took a 4-1 lead with 3 runs in the 5th with a solo HR by Yaz, an RBI double by Dwight Evans and an RBI groundout by Butch Hobson plus an RBI groundout by Carlton Fisk in the 6th. Milwaukee scored a run in the 7th on an error by Eckersley before Bob Stanley came in and allowed the tying run in the 9th on an RBI single by Robin Yount. In the 10th inning, Don Money drove in the go-ahead run with a single then Ed Farmer pitched a 1-2-3 10th to record the win.

After trailing 5-1, Boston rallied for 3 runs in the 8th on an RBI single by Carl Yastrzemski and a 2-run triple by Carlton Fisk but Ed Farmer came in and shut down the Red Sox in the 9th for his fourth save of the season.

Cecil Cooper went 2-5 including a grand slam HR in the 9th inning to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 10-4 rout over the Boston Red Sox as Milwaukee took 3 of 4 games during the series. Gorman Thomas hit a 3-run HR in the 1st and Larry Hisle added a solo HR in the 3rd as the Brewers opened a 4-0 lead and never looked back.

Butch Hobson scored on a bases loaded wild pitch by Sid Monge with one out in the bottom of the 14th to give the Boston Red Sox a 6-5 win over the Cleveland Indians in the opening game of a 4-game weekend series. Dwight Evans hit a 2-run HR in the 2nd to give Boston a 3-0 lead before Cleveland tied the game on a solo HR by Johnny Grubb in the 4th plus an RBI single by Grubb and a sac fly by Gary Matthews in the 6th. The Red Sox came back with 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th on a solo HR by Jim Rice and an RBI single by George Scott. Bob Stanley came in in relief of starter Jim Wright and blew his second straight save as he allowed a pair of runs in the 9th to tie the game at 5-5. Johnny Grubb was named the player of the game with his 2-6, 2 RBI performance. Carl Yastrzemski left the game in the top of the 9th after making a diving catch. He is listed as day-to-day.

Hobson also drove in a run in the 5th with a double that knocked Cleveland starter Rick Waits out of the game. Jim Rice, Fred Lynn and Fred Kendall each hit home runs as the Red Sox battered the Indians' pitchers for 11 runs and 16 hits.

Andre Thornton (pog) went 3-4 with a solo HR to pace the Cleveland attack but to no avail as the Boston Red Sox took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the 5th on solo HRs by Fred Lynn and Butch Hobson and defeated the Indians, 4-3, to sweep the 4-game series. Bill Lee got the win as he pitched 8 innings of 5-hit ball and allowing two runs. Cleveland pulled to within one in the 9th off Dick Drago on a single by Alfredo Griffin but Mike Vail was thrown out at third base on a relay by Jerry Remy from Dwight Evans for the final out of the game.
