That explains a lot......It did have a Madden 09ish feel to it. [Reply]

There's nothing the guy could have done to get them to make the block on that play.

Kind of like this one:

This kind of stuff happens to me pretty much every running play. At least one guy (usually more) on my 85+ offensive line will stand there and let a defender go right around him to blow up the run, and since my back can't run around/through people like some of the others in this game, I get stuffed for two yard gains all game long.

I don't have any problem running the ball with that Titans, who have a line that's just as good as the Broncos, but the difference there is that Johnson can run around people all day, and White can run through people all day.

Just ask Biffchan, whom I ran against in a scrimmage for about 300 all-purpose yards with Chris Johnson.

Problem is, this game is all about speed backs and power backs going around/through guys, and if you don't have that, you can't run consistently.

Bottom line is that this game is still way behind All Pro Football in terms of blocking AI, where I can take a bronze running back and routinely have 100 yard games just by following the blocks of a generic offensive line.

I generally don't like this kind of review-by-replay thing because it's too easy to pick apart a game based on selective replays, but in this case, those three clips are fairly representative of what I've been seeing. Also, I agree with your analysis, I was running all over people with Johnson and all through people with Jacobs online. I think the back matters way more than the o-line or d-line in this game, which was mainly true in APF as well (except for my Ogden CAP). It's just that in APF terms, I think there are a lot of Marcus Allens in this game: great skills, but they don't translate into on-field success because of other issues.

I hope that slow improves things though, because there will be more time to find holes and size up the situation. I found offline running easier than online, and this probably explains some of that. If I can't get some trades done, I plan on beefing up my running game big-time for the rest of the season. Like the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, "life will find a way" (in this case life = smashmouth running game) :-) [Reply]

Yep, this is why some people are still able to have productive running games even with the bad blocking AI.

Marcus Allen's a good example from that game. He couldn't out run people to the corner, nor could he run through people with his strength, so the only way to spring him for big gains was to follow blocks to a T, which he was great at because of his superior cutting and agility between the tackles.

My back Moreno is a lot like the All Pro Football version of Marcus Allen, actually.

Problem is, while an agile, quick cutting back could be very successful in All Pro Football (even with an all-generic offensive line), you can't really have that kind of success in Madden 10, whether you've got a highly rated offensive line or not.

Anyway, I'll try to shut up now so people can get back to their season discussion and I can keep all my blocking talk confined to the other thread. [Reply]

Stop crying weeman. I'll put 100 on you with Lewis next game :-) [Reply]

I had like 60 yards with beanie, who is not very good.

I think you have to commit to the run more in this game, it seems to get easier the more you run, which is kind of nice.

Kinda a bummer to hear that OL rating don't help, Madden has never been really good at this (nor was APF, as I never really felt like I needed a star OL guy).

Have you guys been noticing any type of difference between Star linemen and scrubs? On either side of the line? It would be nice to know that having some studs on the line makes a big difference, so we see some taken in the first round of the draft. [Reply]

From what I've played so far, I think your line talent matters a decent amount on the defensive side of the ball (I have seen good, strong DTs blow up plenty of plays in the backfield as well as good, quick DE controlling the outside run), but not that much on the offensive side of the line (Titans offensive line proving completely futile in my offline franchise).

If I can work some deals with Biff and Schemer to upgrade both my guards from the 80s to the 90s, this will pretty much be the ultimate test to my theory about the running game. [Reply]

You should have your way with me since my defensive front seven is incredibly soft.

I am already planning my half-time speech to the team:

Quick positive point about the run game: Now that our games are on the "slow" setting, I'm finding it much easier to follow and read blocks. I think it'll help.

Another positive point about game speed: Under slow speed the players feel a bit heavier, but it should also allow us to make more solid manual plays and shore up our manual defense. On normal gamespeed things are frantic and I felt like a liability on defense, not a strength. Slow speed should help with that. [Reply]

Sounds good CK. As to whether D-line talent matters, my one breath synopsis is:

on running downs--> definitely
on passing downs--> no [Reply]

Yeah that seems to be what I've noticed so far.

Funny thing is, it's pretty much the opposite in All Pro Football. Defensive linemen were the best thing you could do to defend the pass in that game, but the linemen just don't seem to make many plays against the pass in Madden.

It's usually LBs and DBs making crazy picks and taking them back for touchdowns that makes the difference.

Heck, I had a crazy pick-six my first game with a rookie FS. :-) [Reply]
