SQL Classics Season Thread

SQL Classics

Hey guys, let's get this season going. Post your rosters here, with a blurb on your team and your gamertag. I'll copy them and post them into one thread, so we can check them out at any time.

Rules are simply a general sense of fairness. We all know the cheese in this game, let's not have it. Also, we won't be using Signal Stealer. I have it with Johhny U, so I will lead the charge on this one.

We will have 12 owners in this league. It will be a 10 game season. 1 game per week, in correct order. We will have two seperate divisions, playing each team twice in your own division (AL/NL baseball style). There will be three playoff teams from each division, with the #1 seed getting a first round bye. Here are the owners, their teams, and divisions:

EAST
CreatineKasey - 1989 Saints
dtrain053 - 2002 Buccaneers
tjspeaks - 1989 49ers
ANDROMADA1 - 1969 Browns
The15thunter - 1998 Broncos
Teambayern - 2000 Ravens

WEST
skidsboroff - 1959 Colts
Scooter53 - 1980 Chargers
NFLHITMAN - 2005 Seahawks
dal_hawk - 2002 Iowa Hawkeyes
Football Schemer - 1992 Bills
elgreazy - Cowboys

We will all join the same league, and I believe I can adjust the schedule so that it works as planned. We will divide the divisions up by regions we live in, as best we can. With your team page, blurb, and gamertag, also add either your state or time zone of residence (don't wanna get too personal if anyone's uncomfortable with it). This will allow games to be played more easily.

Also, in an ode to European soccer, the last place teams from each division will be relegated for those on a waiting list (should we have a second season). I figure this is the fairest way to get people into a season without compromising its integrity by getting too big. If we get enough for a second division, we'll use that as a 2nd tier, which teams can be promoted from. All this is assuming everyone wants back for Season 2. Otherwise, it's unnecessary. It will give those doing poorly something to fight for.

Rosters in by tomorrow(20th), edits made by Friday (22nd), league starts Sunday(24th).

Re: SQL Classics Official Thread

1998 denver broncos
g - john elway, qb (in-game)
g - terrell davis, hb (workhorse, breakaway burst, clutch)

s - rod smith, wr (route god, soft hands)
s - steve atwater, fs (big hit, footsteps)
s - shannon sharpe, te (route god, speed burner)

b - bill romanowski, olb (run reader)
b - john mobley, olb (wrap up tackler)
b - mark schlereth, g (bulldozer)
b - trevor pryce, dt (strength bonus)
b - ed mcaffrey, wr (tough in middle)
b - tony jones, t (bulldozer)

a prolific offense (501 points, 31.3 ppg), grounded in a fantastic running game, highlighted by terrell davis' 2,008 yard rushing season. with elway in his last year, shannon sharpe and ed mcaffrey posted pro bowl seasons, while rod smith had an arguably better year than both. not to be forgetten, their defense only allowed 19.3 points a game, and helped lead the team to a 14-2 record (with a 13-0 start).
2nd best scoring offense, 8th best scoring defense. 3rd best in yardage, 11th best in defensive yards. great run defense, poor pass defense, but great in the air and in the sky on offense.

The dome patrol's finest season was 1992 where all 4 linebackers made the pro-bowl the same season on the same team. They all made multiple pro bowls and easily carried the team during this period.

Dome Patrol Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFRdP33FaEY

I wasn't sure how to create these OLB's. They both were great athletes and could rush the passer. Maybe I should give one quick feet or something else. If anyone has a reason why to change their abilities I will.

Re: SQL Classics Official Thread

I am going with a team I did not previously posted

Being a Seahawk fan I will use the only team the Seahawks have ever sent to the Superbowl. Here is that team. Things to keep in mind when looking over the team. Lofa Tatupu was the key factor on defense and received nothing but praise for his leadership and ability to know what the other team would be doing. Tatupu always got his team mates in the right place to make plays and it was said he had an uncanny ability to know what the other team would be doing. I made my team to look like the 2005 Seahawks. The Seahawks had the most sacks in the NFL that year but they also had no one above 9.5 sacks so I did not use any D-Line. Leroy Hill had 7.5 sacks and he is a bronze on this team with Pass Rush Bonus. With very few on Defense I chose to create Lofa as a Gold LB with leadership to rub off on the rest of the defense. Lofa was a Pro Bowler and a 1st team All Pro also as a rookie and has been in the Pro Bowl every year since. The only players IMO that would be worthy of Gold also would be Walter Jones and Steve Hutchinson but I have only 4 on defense so I needed a Gold Defender to lead them to be competitive. O-Lineman are hit and miss but they will both be Silvers while Lofa and Alexander will be the Golds. Here is the team....

G: Lofa Tatupu LB ( Leadership, Coverage Bonus, Run Coverage, Quick Feet, Big Hit )
G: Shaun Alexander RB { NFL MVP } ( Workhorse, Quick Feet, Stamina, Cutback Ability, Arm of Steel )
S: Matt Hasselbeck QB ( Leadership, 4th Q Comeback )
S: Walter Jones T ( Bulldozer, Brick Wall )
S: Steve Hutchinson G ( Bulldozer, Quick Feet )
B: Jerramy Stevens TE ( Acrobatic Catch )
B: Joe Jurevicius WR ( Acrobatic Catch )
B: Mack Strong FB ( Bulldozer )
B: Marcus Trufant CB ( Coverage Bonus )
B: Leroy Hill OLB ( Pass Rush Bonus )
B: Michael Boulware SS ( Quick Feet )

Alexander with 370 carries and at the time a record breaking 28 TD's

2002 Iowa Hakeyes
Gamer tag: SM Hawkeye
Location: Cedar falls, IA Central Time

The 2002 Hawkeyes went undefeated in the Big Ten for the first time since 1922. Had it not been for a heart breaking lost to their rival Iowa state, a game in which they led at the half by 17, Iowa most likely would have been playing in the National Title Game.

While Iowa's 2001 season showed potential of the team, they had to replace 6 offensive starters to their offense. Brad Banks and Fred Russell were set to make starting roles for the first time. Sports Illustrated wrote Iowa making the Alamo Bowl would be seen as a success for this Iowa club.

After leading Iowa to their teams history record wins (11)
Brad Banks received the Davey O'brien award and was annouced AP Player of the year.

Kicker Nate Kaeding received the Lou Groza Award
Dallas Clark received the John Mackey Award
Eric Steinbach was consensus First Team All-American
Bruce Nelson landed First Team All-American honors as well

G: Brad Banks QB (Scrambler, Speed Burner, Rocket Arm, Leadership)
G: Bob Sanders SS(Big Hit, Footsteps, Coverage Bonus, Speed Burner, Leadership)

S: Derek Pagel FS (Coverage Bonus, Quick Feet)
S: Dallas Clark TE (TIM, Clutch)
S: CJ Jones WR (Soft Hands, Speed Burner)

B: Maurice Brown WR (Soft Hands)
B: Fred Barr ILB (Closing Speed)
B: Fred Russell HB (Cut Back)
B: Nate Kaeding K (Kick Strength)
B: Bruce Nelson C (Run Block)
B: Eric Steinbach G (Run Block)

Heres a comment from NFL fan house:
In his first career start at Iowa, Bob recorded 12 tackles and forced a fumble. He went on to have a fabulous college career and became known for his hard hitting and great athletic ability. He ran a 4.41 second 40-yard dash at the NFL combines and was noted for his leadership ability.

Banks might be able to use leadership too

Best time to play 10pm-1am

Introducing the SQL Classic version of the 2002 Buccaneers.

Arguably a top 5 single season defense of all time.
Rivals the Steel Curtain of the 1970's for the dominant defense over a 10 year span (ranked top 10 defensively 9 consecutive seasons (1997-2005)

In 2002 allowed only 196 points scored (12.2 PPG) while leading the league in total yards, and total points allowed. They also led the league in passing YPG (155.6) and ranked 5th against the run (97.3 YPG)

Opponents QB rating vs the Buccaneers in 2002 was a dismail 48.4 a full 20 points less then second ranked Green Bay's at 68.7.

Led the league in PD's (251) INT's (31) INT TD's (4tie) and defensive TD's (5) [The Buccaneers would add 9 INTs and 4 more TD's to that list in the playoffs]

Now that you have some background on the team, here is a bit on the guys that made them the team they were.

G: Derrick Brooks RLB Pro Bowl (Speed Burner, Closing Speed, Leadership, Clutch, Quick Feet)
2002 NFL DPOY and center piece of the mighty Buccaneer defense. Brooks was known for his ability to make the big play and his leadership. Brooks also knew what to do with the ball in his hands, scoring 4 defensive TD's in the regular season and 1 in the Super Bowl. Brooks could cover more ground then any other LB in the game.

G: Warren Sapp DT Pro Bowl (Strength, Quick Feet, Club, Sack Master, Pass Rush)
A lock at the Hall, probably first ballot there is no denying that Warren Sapp was the 1B to DB's 1A on that team. Surprising nimble for his size (Sapp was actually recruited to Miami as a TE) Sapp terrorized opposing offensive lineman for 96.5 sacks in his career.

S: Simeon Rice RDE Pro Bowl (Quick Feet, Rip)
Rice was the Yin to Sapps Yang, leading the NFC (2nd in NFL to J. Taylor) in sacks with 15.5. Rice would be a Gold on any other team for 2002.

S: John Lynch SS Pro Bowl (Foot Steps, Quick Feet)
One of the best SS to play the game IMO. A fearless hard hitter willing to sacrafice his body to dislocate the ball from the receiver. A fan favorite and a solid canidate for the Hall.

S: Brad Johnson QB Pro Bowl (Laser Arm, Leadership)
Brad Johnson's performance in 2002 was the difference in past seasons that ended in disappointing losses in the playoffs. Ever consistent and barely made any mistakes. Very important on a team that offensively only ranked 24th best. Ever possesion mattered and Johnson made the most of each.

B: Mike Alstott FB* Pro Bowl (BT) At Half Back
Mike Alstott's running style is defined by the branched tackle. No Buccaneer team from the Dungy-Gruden era would be complete without him.

B: Shelton Quarles LLB* Pro Bowl (Quick Feet) *Played MLB in 2002 but was a LLB before. Playing MLB though.
I made Shelton at OLB and moved him to MLB where he played to better depict his coverage abilities and reduce his run coverage.

B: Ronde Barber CB (Quick Feet)
Most years Barber would be a silver. With Brad Johnson doing what he did, and the fact that people shied away from Barber (league high 10 INT's in 2001) it was a off year for Barber.

B: Brian Kelly CB (Quick Feet)
Kelly led the league with 10 INT's, in large part due to people picking on him with Barber on the other side. Still he made them pay and needs to be on the roster.

B: Keyshawn Johnson WR (Possesion)
Say what you will about the original trouble making WR (Anyone remember when he got rode out of Tampa?) Keyshawn was a great possesion receiver, great run blocker, and one of the toughest SOB's in the middle ever.

B: Keenan McCardell (BAB)
Keenan was the more athletic WR thus the "field stretcher" running most of the teams very limited vertical routes.

2000 Ravens: still open to changes, but this is the build I propose

The 2000 Ravens took the NFL by storm. Rebounding off an 8-8 season the year before, the Ravens played like a team on a mission. On the foundation of one of the greatest defenses ever assembled, the Ravens went 12-4 in the regular season en route to its first Festivus in Super Bowl XXXV. The team retains the title of best statistical defense of all-time, holding the record for fewest points allowed during a 16 game season and fewest rushing yards allowed. More than statistics can reveal, however, the Ravens played with a grit, tenacity, and style that puts them in a league of their own. The heart of the team is MLB Ray Lewis, a true leader who deserves any and all of the defensive abilities listed in APF. For pass defense, Baltimore had a legitimate shutdown corner in Chris McAllister, a veteran legend in Rod Woodson, sackmaster Peter Boulware, and a opportunistic Kim Herring at SS. For run defense, the Ravens boasted the aforementioned Lewis, the relentless Michael McCrary at DE, and just shy of 700 pounds of DT starting each game.

On the offensive side of the ball, Jonathon Ogden has been considered the pinnacle tackle of his lifetime, redefining the importance of the position even without the aid of an ace quarterback. And the standout rookie Jamal Lewis proved deadly the combination of speed and power. All in all, the Ravens remain a unique and definitive Championship team.

G- Jonathon Ogden T (Leadership, Brick Wall, Bulldozer)
G- Ray Lewis MLB (Leadership, Run Reader, Coverage Bonus)

S-Rod Woodson FS (Ball Hawk, Run Coverage)
S-Sam Adams DT (Pass Rush Bonus, Rip)
S- Jamal Lewis RB (Bab, Power) (should I change this to workhorse?)

B-Peter Boulware OLB(Pass Rush Bonus)
B- Chris McAllister CB (Coverage Bonus)
B- Shannon Sharpe TE (Speed Burner)
B- Tony Siragusa DT (Club)
B- Kim Herring SS (Ball Hawk)
B- Michael McCrary DE (Club)

Let me know if there are any issues.

.
The 1989 49ers had what many call the best postseason ever. It was capped off by a 55-10 dismantling of the Denver Broncos.

K Mike Cofer led the team with 136 points.

The offense was led by 4 pro bowlers: Joe Montana, Jerry Rice (102 points), John Taylor (60 points) and Roger Craig (42 points). TE Brent Jones added 24 points.

The defense was led by pro bowler Ronnie Lott (42 tackes, 5 INTs), Charles Haley (57 tackles, 3 forced fumbles, and 10.5 sacks), Bill Romanowski (53 tackles, 1 forced fumble and 1 INT), Don Griffin (47 tackles, 2 INTs) and Chet Brooks (3 INTs).

QB Joe Montana
FS Ronnie Lott
WR Jerry Rice (route god, BaB)
HB Roger Craig
LB Charles Haley (pass rush, quick feet)
