Re: APF Players' Response to Madden 10 News

Not trying to hijak the thread, but wanted to flag for you attention that I've got a poll going on the Madden side as to whether tiered playcalling should be added to future Maddens.

I don't know if you like or dislike this feature in APF, but either way make your voice heard so that Ian and co get a good idea of whether they should be working on this for the future.

Re: APF Players' Response to Madden 10 News

I'm really hoping that I can enjoy Madden this year, but the NCAA demo brought down my enthusiasm a bit. There were some things I liked about it, such as the way defenders react, but overall it just seemed kind of blah to me. I can't wait until we get a Madden demo so I can get a feel for what it's going to be like. If it plays exactly like NCAA I might skip it altogether and just go back to what I know. I'm gonna start playing APF again because I'm really fiending for some football lately. I guess I'm getting the itch now that we're getting closer to the season.

I also want to try that BCFX game out because I think it would be a nice change of pace. Haven't seen anything in the way of true gameplay yet, but the way it looks and the characters move reminds me of All Pro a lot.

Re: APF Players' Response to Madden 10 News

While I do enjoy the variety in running animations and overall distinctions in the different player's abilities that All Pro 2K8 brought to the table, there were many things in 2K8 that I still thought were very flawed.

For example, alot of the animations started to get that repetitive, deja vu feeling to certain outcomes on specific plays. For example, every time I would run a certain play, the exact outcome of the results, animations, etc would start to repeat itself in a cycle of either "this" or "that".....rather than seeing completely organic results each time you ran it, based on different players and teams.

A good example would be running a quick out pattern...it was either caught, and then the defender would tackle the player immediately or the defender would diagonally caught across the path and tip the ball while tackling the reciever....It was too many of those 'either'/'or' scenarios like that which would made the game start to feel somewhat on scripted on/off rails at times....at least moreso than Madden that had more opportunity for organic results

Now this is not to say that Madden is superior, because it is far from it...especially with those unnatural and cartoony player models. Madden cant compare to what 2K delivered 2 years ago.

Im hoping Madden 2010 can rectify some of this

Re: APF Players' Response to Madden 10 News

I'm starting to feel that Madden is never going to be what we want it to be. I know I will not buy it this year and will stick with APF. I take long breaks and come back to the game so it stays fresh for me. The gameplay is just amazing. Nothing about the new Madden intrigues me at all. I bought it last year and sold it 2 months later. It's just not very good, and it won't be until they completely change the game.

What I want to discuss is the general reactions to Madden by APF fans. What are those of us who have played this game and loved it feeling/thinking about Madden?

To focus the discussion, I'll ask a few starter questions, and we'll see where it goes.

1) Do you think APF will remain relevant after Madden drops; i.e. will it still get serious gaming time from you.
2) What have you seen from Madden 10 that makes you say "they moved the sport forward" just like you saw APF and said "they moved 2k5 forward"?
3) What still seems to stand out about APF from the evidence we have so far about Madden?
4) Are you planning on spending serious time with Madden 10?
5) This one is purely for self-interest: how many would be interested in an online franchise with APF players--in other words, playing online in Madden with guys who play APF whom we know are real football-heads?

So there goes. Talk amongst yourselves.
1) APF will always get gaming time from me after Madden drops. Simply because I enjoy playing with legends of NFL's past.

2) Nothing yet. I'll make those decisions when and if I rent/borrow Madden 10.

3) Gameplay and animations stand out easily for me in APF.

4) Initially, for maybe a week when and if I rent/borrow it. If it is the same as previous installations, I'll give it back. If not, I'd give it more time. Quite frankly, I'm more interested in Backbreaker if that ever comes out.

5) I'd be interested, but that is pending on how Madden 10 plays and feels. If it even slightly resembles the past pieces of garbage considered next-gen Madden, then I don't plan on taking it online.

I'm sure I'll come back to APF after the newness wears off, I hope madden is so good I don't come back. But I doubt it.

2) What have you seen from Madden 10 that makes you say "they moved the sport forward" just like you saw APF and said "they moved 2k5 forward"?

Finally referees on the field and hopefully building the atmosphere of the game

3) What still seems to stand out about APF from the evidence we have so far about Madden?

That question makes my head hurt but I think you are asking what will still stand out about APF in comparison to M10. I think it will still be the little things like interactive sidelines, gameplay etc. After playing madden 2 or 3 games in a row I feel like I'm just going through the motions. I never feel that way about 2K8. Also in madden I never feel like I need to mess with my depth chart or subs etc, and that is one of the best features of 2K8 as well as 2K5 in online games.

4) Are you planning on spending serious time with Madden 10?

Yes I plan on getting all the achievements like every year then playing the heck of it online until it gets boring. I lasted longer on Madden 09 than any other so hopefully I'll get alot of time out of 10

5) This one is purely for self-interest: how many would be interested in an online franchise with APF players--in other words, playing online in Madden with guys who play APF whom we know are real football-heads?

no interest.

So there goes. Talk amongst yourselves.[/quote]

Re: APF Players' Response to Madden 10 News

I still can't believe what a letdown APF was for me.

Let me put my explanation into three words - no franchise mode. For most of you this isn't a big deal because you have online, but no such luck for me. However, it has got to be some of (if not the) best gameplay ever....

Anywho...

1- Ya, it'll still get a lot of play from me because there's no way the gameplay is better than APF. If we're lucky, it'll be on the same level, but in any case you can't play with Jerry Rice or Joe Montana on Madden 10.

2- The fact that they finally added ".5" to tackles for assists, the pro-tak system, the improved franchise presentation, the new draft classes... these are the new things that have me intrigued with the new Madden.

3- Uniqueness of players. Besides the fact that Sweetness and the Golden Boy throw like crap because they're RBs (both Payton and Hornung threw well throughout their careers), everyone really plays how they're supposed to play. I even saw a Create-a-Player Flutie who played like Flutie because of the way he was built. That's just the way that this game is.

4- Ya, but I might buy it used (not to boycott, but I could use that extra five dollars). It better not blow, that's all I know... last year I couldn't really run the ball... It was terrible.

5- I wouldn't, but for a myriad of reasons. First and foremost, I lack XBL. Secondly, the online franchise is supposed to be lacking some of offline's new upgrades. Third, if I had to play with 31 other people, I'd go crazy. It'd never move forward.

Re: APF Players' Response to Madden 10 News

When Madden 09 came out I put APF 2k8 on the shelf and left it there. I've never really been a Madden player before so with 09 I decided to give it a real honest shot. I've been playing Madden all year, played a couple games yesterday. Last night for the first time in a very long time I played a game of APF 2k8. After having not played it for so long , the game felt new and fresh. It was such a nice change from Madden 09.

Obviously no one can say for sure how Madden 10 will stack up against APF 2k8 until it's released, I can say from what I've seen so far from Madden 10 , I feel it wil be a much improved game over 09 but still will not have the realism and real football feel that 2k8 has. We've already seen that the presentation Madden 10 offers is still at least a years development to go before it's up to par with the 2k games , and I also agree with others that although Madden 10 looks improved, it still has a bit of a stiff robotic look to it.

That said I'm buying it and I'll play the hell out of it because I love football.

I truely wish a day would come when Phil Frazier and Ian Cummings would go into Peter Moores office and say, "Peter we've takin the Madden game as far as we can, I think we should try and get together with the guys from Visual Concepts , combine our talents, take all the time we need , and release the best football game the world has ever seen". That's my dream.

Re: APF Players' Response to Madden 10 News

1) Do you think APF will remain relevant after Madden drops; i.e. will it still get serious gaming time from you.

This will all depend on how well Madden executes the AI, and gameplay in madden 10.
APF will still be relevant to me simply because the animations and gameplay is sweet and smooth.

2) What have you seen from Madden 10 that makes you say "they moved the sport forward" just like you saw APF and said "they moved 2k5 forward"?

Bringing much better presentation to Madden, and all the work in making a playoff game feel much more than a regular season game. I cant comment on AI or anything else simply becuase I have not played the game.

3) What still seems to stand out about APF from the evidence we have so far about Madden?

The Animations from APF are far ahead of Madden.

4) Are you planning on spending serious time with Madden 10?

If Ian delivers on the game being sim again, then yes.

5) This one is purely for self-interest: how many would be interested in an online franchise with APF players--in other words, playing online in Madden with guys who play APF whom we know are real football-heads?

I would be interested but unfortunately I have a league setup with friends, so I wont have enough time.

Thanks for the questions that was cool

Re: APF Players' Response to Madden 10 News

Some interesting responses, guys, and many many thanks for all the good work in keeping the thread civil and focused.

I've been following some of Tombsong's posts in the Madden thread and they, coupled with the responses in this thread, made me think that this discussion could use a bump.

When I first put the inquiry out, we had a lot of interesting news and titillating footage surrounding new features such as WR/DB jostling and player momentum.

Now, we've seen more gamplay videos and have heard from the team that a few of the things we were really excited about are not in the game any more or aren't as extensively implemented as we'd have liked because they were breaking existing parts of the game.

In order to help with structure and staying on topic, I'll just post a couple more guiding questions (but please don't feel like they're designed to limit your response, just keep it civil):

--Where's your hype meter at with Madden 10 at present?
--What have the latest run of vids suggested to you about what's changed and what's stayed the same on the field and in terms of core game play?
