Re: College Lacrosse 10 for XBLA

Is it XNA or XBLA?

I may be an achievement whore... but I'd be willing to try this, as long as TPIR.

Well, Krioniq said it was an XNA game and it kind of confused me. If it's XBLA, I'll get it no doubt, because there'll be achievements. If it's XNA, I might not even realize it comes out because Major Nelson doesn't describe it, and there are no achievements.

Oh, I just checked their site, and it's indeed an XNA, or Indie game. The title should change to reflect that.

Clearly says it's an "Indie Game" on the Facebook page.

*shrugs*

If it's good then it doesn't matter if it doesn't have achievements.

Yeah, but achievements are the way of the future, and I've already stated that I'm an achievement whore. I'll probably get it after a while, but I dunno, it seems like a good idea but I'm not sure if the execution will be there. How many sports games work out like this?

It looks like this has already been clarified but I'm chiming in anyway.

It's coming out for XBOX Live Arcade via Indie Games; XNA is the runtime program environment / framework (I'm not quite sure technically what it is) that the programmer is using to make this. Google "XNA Game Studio" to find out more, and if you're interested in using it to make your own games (which isn't that hard and pretty fun, actually, if you have a good handle on C++), then bone up on your C# (which, if you know C++, isn't hard to pick up at all).

To answer the last part, I'm not sure how many true 3D sports games have been made in XNA; in my limited experience, compared to other genres, there's a TON of stuff in sports games that needs to work well in order for the game to succeed. The only game I can think of off the top of my head is FITBA, a soccer game in which the characters lack visible limbs (to save time on the animation and modeling ends). FITBA has received good reviews despite this, however.

As for achievements, I'm not sure why the decision was made to not allow XNA games to have achievements, but I'm guessing that it's so achievement whores don't buy a Creators Club account and make 80 jillion "Hello World" games, reaping the achievement point benefits from all of them.

Rock Band 2 songs are supposed to be $2 and are 160 points apiece, so I'd guess 800 points.

Microsoft limits Indie Games' pricing options based on the size of the game file. If I recall correctly, if the game is over 150MB in size then the price must be $10; otherwise it can be priced as low as $5.

Indie Games used to be called XNA games, weren't they? I understand the environment/framework part of it, I just was referring to the previous name of the program. Also, I'd rather not bone up on my C#, or .NET or anything crazy like that. Give me Java, PHP, and Python any day.

I was generally referring to non-text sports games from smaller development shops, not only Indie games. I can't remember a good non-text sports game that wasn't from a large shop.

I certainly understand reasoning behind not allowing achievements from Indie games, but it would tip my decision a little had it been a XBLA game. Who knows, it might make it like Blazing Birds did.
