Welcome to Revis Island & the New York Jets training camp

The New York Jets want the thank all of our loyal fans and welcome you to our open practices at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center, This is the new look Jets moving from a 3-4 to the traditional 4-3 (Bears playbook) and with a new defensive coordinator & scheme expect to return to the top of the NFL’s defensive leader board.
Also look for an offense with an entirely new play book and approach; the Jets look to execute a balanced run heavy game plan(Dallas playbook), but with Mark Sanchez at the helm we still have the ability to air it out!

New York Jets: Why Stephen Hill Must Become a Star in 2012

The New York Jets certainly are lacking in the talent department at wide receiver. Stephen Hill, the team’s second-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, must step up and become a star right away in order for the Jets to have a successful passing game this season.
The only proven wide receiver the Jets have on their roster is Santonio Holmes. Holmes is a former Super Bowl MVP, but he has been a major distraction to the team recently. At the end of last season, Holmes was accused of “checking out early,” and he's now suffering from a rib injury that has him out of practice and doubtful for the team’s preseason opener.
Across from Holmes, the other starting wide receiver spot is still up for grabs. Hill has a much bigger upside than the other possible options—Chaz Schilens and Jeremy Kerley—so he must thrive during training camp and claim this spot on the Jets depth chart as his own.
Entering the NFL, Hill has all the physical attributes that a star wide receiver needs to have. He also stole the show at the NFL combine this year, which proves he has the ability to step up during pressure situations.
Hill measured in at the combine at 6’4” and 215 pounds. At this height, he also had one of the best leaping abilities in the entire draft. His vertical jump was 39.5 inches, good for fifth best at the combine. He also showcased his blistering speed that helped him thrive at Georgia Tech. Even with his height, Hill still tied for the fastest 40 time out of any player, clocking in at 4.36 seconds.

“I’m ready to give the Jet fans something to scream about. Catching the ball from Mark Sanchez [will be] great. I’m going to make sure I get with him as soon as possible and try to get this roll on. It’s going to be a big transition. I’m ready to go. I’m ready to learn. I’m a quick lerner, so I'm ready to se how things unfold"

What will really help Hill become a star in only his rookie season is his terrific blocking ability. In college, Hill primarily played in a triple-option offense. This didn’t allow him to gain much experience running routes and catching the ball, but it definitely taught him how to block for his running backs.
Hill became an extremely physical player over the past three seasons, something the Jets need out of their wide receivers since they plan on going back to the ground-and-pound system that got them to the AFC Championship two years in a row.
Hill had this to say about his physicality on the field: “I can definitely put somebody on their butt. They liked my physicality a lot.”
Hill was off to a fast start when training camp opened, impressing both his new coaches and teammates. What makes him even more impressive was that his fast start was mainly against Darrelle Revis. Ryan really liked the way Hill was blocking against Revis, saying: “I saw a block, and I saw a corner go down.”

New York Jets: How Good Could This Defense Be?

The buzz around the New York Jets defense heading into this season is that the potential is there to return to an elite unit in the NFL. In 2009, the Jets were 1st in total defense. In 2010, the Jets were 3rd in total defense. Last season they were down to 5th in total defense. It isn’t exactly like they were awful but much of the luster was gone, particularly when Tim Tebow drove down the field on them for a game winning touchdown, New England shredded them in their own building and Philadelphia embarrassed them late in the season.
Simply put the Jets defense lost their swag, aptly demonstrated by the loudest mouth on the team, Bart Scott struggling through a subpar year. This was a unit that was too slow, didn’t make enough big plays and didn’t put fear into opposing offenses the way it did for stretches of the 2009 and 2010 season. They became predictable and stopped attacking.
Why is there such a high amount of chatter about improvement this season?
Coaching – Rex Ryan will be taking a much more hands on role with the defensive playcalling this season after giving many of the duties over to Defensive Coordinator Mike Pettine last year. This isn’t a knock on Pettine but it will be good to have Rex more involved in the day to day planning of the defense. In 2009, Ryan taught his system with great success and the Jets are now “going back to square one” with their installation which will help with fundamentals and preventing the amount of mental mistakes that occurred last year.
Beyond that, the Jets wisely hired Karl Dunbar away from the Minnesota Vikings to be their defensive line coach. We have sung Dunbar’s praises at length here at TOJ and for good reason. The Jets had a defensive back coaching their defensive line last season in Mark Carrier, they now have a well-respected line coach who coached one of the league’s best defensive lines over the past few years. More importantly, Dunbar has the knowledge to help the transition to using more 4-3 looks.
Versatility – The Jets aren’t going to be as locked into the 3-4 as they were in the past. With the strength of this year’s defense (outside of cornerback) being the defensive line, they will be using more 4-3 and 46 alignments. This is a wise move and credit the coaching staff for not trying to fit square pegs into round holes (something Eric Mangini loved to do). The Jets have better depth and talent on their defensive line than at linebacker, so why not make more of an effort to get those players on the field?
Personnel Additions – There weren’t a ton of these but they notably they improved the safety position by adding Yeremiah Bell and O.J. Atogwe and added needed speed in the front seven by drafting Quinton Coples, Demario Davis, and trading for Jason Babin. Bell, Atogwe Coples, and Babin all project as opening day starters and Davis should see action on passing downs. They also drafted Josh Bush in the sixth round, who will see action at free safety.
Internal Improvement – Bart Scott has dropped weight and by all indications looks poised to be more of the player he was in 2009 and 2010 than he was in 2011. Aaron Maybin has now had a full off-season to work with the coaching staff and improve his craft in Rex Ryan’s system. Muhammad Wilkerson had a terrific off-season and looks ready to build on a quietly strong rookie year. Bryan Thomas is returning from missing most of last season with injury.
Still Elite – Darrelle Revis and David Harris. The best corner in football and one of the top five inside linebackers in football still suit up in Green and White.
What you should have is a unit that is deeper at linebacker, defensive line and safety than it was last season. It should also be a unit better equipped to bounce between a 3-4, 4-3 and 46.
Is there still question marks? Yes. The Jets still lack a proven coverage safety. They would be wise to add another corner for depth purposes (Drew Coleman anyone?) and Bart Scott, Bryan Thomas, and Calvin Pace have plenty to prove at linebacker. However, from top to bottom the Jets are equipped to have the best defense in their division and one of the best in the NFL.

Hill, Rookie Class Already Hard at Work at Minicamp

Stephen Hill continues to impress. First, he confirmed he signed his rookie contract on Thursday, the day that the Jets’ rookie class reported to get their physicals, get photographed and get prepared for today’s start of minicamp.
Stephen, you seem to be the kind of guy who likes to get business taken care of and get out on the field.
“Yes, sir, definitely,” he replied.
And sure enough, No. 84 was the first player who jogged out onto the practice field, past the Victory Tree, at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center, all alone in the May drizzle but joined minutes later by the rest of the 57 or so draft picks, undrafted free agents, tryout candidates and first-year invited players for the first workout of minicamp.
“Yeah, I like to be the first one out there and get my body prepared for the hard work,” he said.
Hill’s hard work for the day looked solid. On the comeback and slant route drills, Hill caught the hot passes often delivered by WRs coach Sanjay Lal and took off upfield. On a 7-on-7 drill, rookie G.J. Kinne’s pass deflected off of two defenders — and Hill was there to snap the ball up for the offense right before it hit the ground.
The 6’4″, 215-pound second-rounder from Georgia Tech appeared to drop one low ball, and he couldn’t quite catch up to a deep sideline pass. But otherwise he looked at home — especially as he worked through some of the pro routes that many seem concerned to see him master after he spent three seasons in Tech’s triple-option offense.
“Yeah, I can run all the routes,” Hill said. “You take a little time before you actually master them. Repetition is definitely what it is.”
He admitted to “drooling a little” when he got into his playbook and saw the routes that might free him up for, oh, about 50 receptions as a pro, or one more than he had in his three college seasons combined. How did he bide his time waiting for his one or two balls a game for the Yellow Jackets? His answer provided a greenprint for any player who ever thinks about being impatient or depressed with his career path.
“Basically, I’m a winner,” Hill said. “Anytime you win, it’s the biggest thing. If Coach called my number, I’d be there for him.”
As Hill spoke with reporters, it was hard not to notice the one short blade of grass still sticking to his left cheek. Nice touch for a hard-working wideout.

Re: Welcome to Revis Island & the New York Jets training camp

After much speculation the Jets announce Mark Sanchez as the starter for the 2012 season. Rex Ryan said "Mark is our quarterback we win and lose together, his leadership will be key this season."
