Re: somebody help very important LEGAL question about college hoop rosters
StatSheet.com does not provide 1995-96 roster information. I don't see how he could claim that he owns your roster project. That's stretching it a bit. You would not be redistributing their information because they don't have any information for 1995-96.
But if he does decide to provide you with info for those years, I would just go with his wishes, and ask him if he will host it for free on StatSheet.com. Having all of those statistics accessible and available for free would be a big help in a project like this. It would be worth it, unless your magazines provide everything that StatSheet already provides.
I see his point though. It would be applicable if you were making 1996-97 rosters and using his website exclusively for data. He spent a lot of money on collegiate licenses to be able to host mass amounts player info on his website. If you copy all of it exactly into a roster file and spread it around, then you would essentially be copying a portion of his website and saying that it belongs to you.
If he doesn't provide 1995-96 info, then just stick to using your magazines and pretend like you never e-mailed the guy. That's my opinion.
I really hope you are able to complete this project by the way. It would be awesome to have authentic rosters from that season. Most people start things like this and never finish them, but you seem pretty intent on creating these no matter how long it takes. Plus, you spent $100 on 7 magazines! Thanks for doing this, and good luck with your project. Too bad it's not a PS3 file.
