Re: Building Ashley a Winner: GJEM’s Kentucky Wildcats Dynasty

Dallas, TX- Not since 1952 have the Kentucky Wildcats been invited to the historic Cotton Bowl Classic but getting their just wasn’t enough for the wildcats, they wanted to win and win they did, pounding the punch drunk Tigers 35-14 in a surprising one sided affair.

It wasn’t the shootout that everyone expected nor was it as close as we thought but Kentucky’s defense wouldn’t allow it. The Wildcats held the Tigers to just 21 rushing yards on 17 attempts.

Patrick Newberry’s back-up senior quarterback Jimmy Costello looked the part throwing 2 picks, two more than he has thrown in the previous 4 games. Costello can’t receive all the blame however as Missouri’s wide receivers didn’t do him any favors dropping 7 perfectly thrown passes.

Missouri’s defense did a great job of limiting the damage Heisman candidate Brandon Powell caused, holding Powell to 103 yards on 23 carries and no touchdowns.

Missouri also made return specialist Kevin Royal a non threat, holding him to just 74 yards on 4 returns with a long of 25 yards.

It was over when… Red shirt freshman wide receiver Daniel Vincent caught a 15-yard touchdown pass late in the third-quarter to put the ‘Cats on top by 14 points, 28-14.

Gameball goes to… Matt Lentz of Kentucky, who threw for 180 yards and two TDs while running for another score.

Missouri’s Unsung Hero… Strong safety Zaviar Gooden, Gooden picked off two Matt Lentz passes totaling 31 return yards, had 6 tackles and 1 pass deflection.

Kentucky’s Unsung Hero… Cartier Rice, Rice was able to give the Wildcats a slim but comfortable 14-point lead late in the first-quarter with a 71-yard interception return for a touchdown. The minute Rice crossed the goal line you could just see the air deflate out of the Missouri sideline, as if they had already lost the game and their just wasn’t any point in playing the remaining three quarters.

Stat of the game… 78%. The Wildcats converted 78% of their third down attempts, one of the biggest contributing factors in their impressive 21-point victory.
