I have never played NFL 2k5 but based on the 2k games I have played it wouldnt suprise me that it would be a better game than Madden 09. I would have to say the best game I have played is CH 2k8.
The only football game by 2k that I have played was APF and it was way better as far as gameplay than any madden I have played which is most of them since 00 and a couple before that.
2k ussually scores lower with critics it seems but in my opinion this is probably because
1) EA games like madden, March maddness and NBA live have flashier graphics. Notice, not better graphics, but flashier. The actual player models and the background and the fields and stuff might be better in madden, but APF, CH, and NBA2k have way more realistic motion in their players and therefor more realistic graphics.
2) EA games are more along the lines of arcade games. They put more into the entertainment of a single game for someone who knows little about the sport and wont recognize the absense of realism and much less into realism of gameplay and depth. To recognize the better gameplay of 2k games requires some knowledge of the sports and to get a feel and appreciation of the depth you have to play a couple years in a dynasty.
The depth in dynasty type modes is where 2k really sets themselves apart in all the games I have played
