Re: The Philadelphia Athletics,1905 And On-OOTP 9
Athletics ATHighlanders
Game One Of Four
Hilltop Park,NY,NY-In what is becoming one of this league's most fiercely competitive rivalries, the Athletics and Highlanders battled to the very last out where A's reliever Weldon Henley once again got his team out of a 9th inning jam by getting "Buffalo Bill" Hogg to fly out to right with two men on and his team clinging to a 4-3 lead.Henley is now 7 for 7 in save opportunities, best in the league.Early on it looked as though there would be no need for Henley as the A's struck for 3 first inning runs on an RBI single by Harry Davis and back to back RBI doubles by Danny Murphy and Danny Hoffman. In the bottom of the inning the Highlanders got one back on an RBI single by Hal Chase making it 3-1 after one. From there though, the pitchers took over with neither team able to get anything going until the 8th where the A's stretched the lead to 4-1 thanks to another Danny Murphy RBI double, his second of the game.A's starter Chief Bender entered the bottom of the 9th full of confidence and it just seemed like a matter of time until win #11 was in the bag,but a base hit and two errors later, the New Yorkers had the sacks full with only one out for Rube Oldring who's sac fly closed the gap to 4-2 with two outs.Wid Conroy followed with a line drive single to left center scoring another run to make it 4-3 with runners on first and second.Weldon Henley then entered the game getting Bill Hogg to fly out and saving the day for Bender. Here's the box score.
