Browns Score 4 In 5th To Stun Athletics
Sportsman's Park-St.Louis Mo.-The last place St.Louis Browns shocked the 2nd place Athletics today with a well played 5-3 victory. The Athletics had it going early as CF Danny Hoffman led off the game with a single, stole second, was sacrificed to third and finally scored on a sac fly by Socks Seybold giving the A's the 1-0 lead. The Athletics made it 2-0 in the second when following a Topsy Hartsel leadoff double,Danny Murphy came to the plate and singled him home. The Browns answered in the bottom of the inning with a run of their own on an RBI ground out by pitcher Barney Pelty making it 2-1.In the fourth, the Athletics Harry Davis led off the inning with a triple, and scored on a nifty suicide squeeze executed to perfection by Topsy Hartsel making it 3-1 Athletics. In the 5th,everything went wrong for A's starting pitcher Eddie Plank. After loading the bases with a single and two walks,Plank then walked Ike Rockenfeld to bring in one run,he then hit Charlie Starr with a pitch to give St.Louis another run,and finally,Frank Roth singled bringing home two more runs giving St.Louis a 5-3 lead after 5.Over the final four innings, the Athletics could put nothing together and fell by the same 5-3 score.Barney Pelty was today's winning pitcher improving to 2-4 while Gettysburg Eddie absorbed the loss falling to 4-2.Here's the box score.
