AWAKING THE ECHOES OF PAUL "BEAR" BRYANT
KENTUCKY ANNOUNCES A NEW HEAD COACH TO RUN SMASH MOUTH STYLE OF OFFENSE.
From UK's first All-American, Clyde Johnson, to its most recent, Derek Abney; from Professor A.M. Miller to Coach Rich Brooks; from old Stoll Field to Commonwealth Stadium; from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Southeastern Conference; and with all the ensuing changes, Kentucky football holds a unique and storied tradition that began in 1881.
UK football holds a captivating list of firsts: UK was the first South-eastern Conference team to introduce football, which it did in 1881; UK played in the first and only Great Lakes Bowl in 1947, defeating Villanova, 24-14; Kentucky tackle Bob Gain was awarded the 1950 Outland Trophy, making him the first player from the SEC to claim the honor; the Wildcats' Nat Northington was the first African-American player to sign with a South-eastern Conference institution and the first to play in a league contest - vs. Ole Miss in 1967. And in 1989, UK became the first SEC school to win the coveted College Football Association Academic Achievement Award for highest graduation rate.
In 116 seasons, Kentucky has participated in 1,130 contests and owns 545 wins, 541 losses and 44 ties. The 545 victories rank 43rd among NCAA Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) programs in most wins. Kentucky football has won one national championship, two Southeastern Conference championships and appeared in 11 bowls.
After the departure of Head Coach Rich Brooks following the 2007 season, Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart decided to usher in a new era of football one which will bring with it a new brand of smash mouth football coupled with a take no prisoner’s mentality. The man which will realize that dream will be newly announced head coach Garrett Mitchell who won a national title during his tenure at the University of Wyoming during the 2008 edition of EA Sports NCAA College Football. Coach Mitchell posted a 70-23 record, won 3 conference titles (2 Big 12, 1 MWC) and went 5-2 in Bowl games while on the high plains of Laramie and brought Wyoming to the forefront of the College Football Universe.
A look back at Coach Mitchell's prior highlights.
“I’m so thankful that Mr. Barnhart chose me to usher in this new era of football that will be played at the University of Kentucky and I can’t wait to get to work,” said Coach Mitchell. “I want to build a program that everybody here at the University of Kentucky can be proud of and a program that will be the bench mark for other top Universities to strive towards. I believe in our athletic department and what we will and can achieve. I don’t have a doubt in my mind that will bring home a BCS National Title trophy while I’m the head coach here in Lexington. It’s not a matter of “if” but a matter of “when” and I’m anxious to get to work and find out that very answer.”
“I will bring in the kids we need to achieve the style of football we want to run here at Kentucky. First and foremost we need to find guys with lots of speed so we can run with the big boys of the SEC, the Florida’s, the Alabama’s, the Tennessee’s of the SEC world. With that being said we “might” and I emphasize “might” go through some growing pains early while our players adapt to this smash mouth style of play but once we take off there will be NO stopping us I can guarantee that. I see only positive things in our future and the first positive is building a team that will beat the tar out of the Tennessee Volunteers each and every time we face them as well as those pesky Cardinals to the Northwest, I promise you before my run of terror is over here we “will” have a winning record against those rival teams. That’s all for now but I ask that everybody makes the trip up to Louisville to help us usher in this new era of Kentucky football on August 31st when we open up the 2008 season against the Louisville Cardinals and let’s see if we can get this team off on the right foot. Thank You."
