This is just beyond logic. The only I can think is a UI glitch that's covering up access... that's the only thing that makes sense. Why would they remove them?!?! People throw around the concept of EA removing features, but they rarely actually "remove" anything from the code... some things didn't get remade for nextgen, but nothing was physically taken out... this, on the other hand, WOULD be taking it out, and it makes NO sense.
