Spring training is more than just laid-back, carefree living in warm-weather climes. For clubs, it's about self-evaluation. For players, it's about making the big squad, or, failing that, impressing club officials enough to earn a promotion in the minor ranks. For team doctors, it begins the daily struggle against injury, illness, tiredness, and general disrepair. Hardly the lackadaisical atmosphere portrayed in the media. |

New York and Boston have closed a blockbuster deal involving star players. The Highlanders have swapped 28-year old second baseman Jimmy Williams to the Americans for 26-year old starting pitcher George Winter.
Over his career Williams is batting .299 with 157 doubles, 100 triples, 34 home runs, 519 RBIs and scored 517 runs in 791 games.
The 26-year-old Winter has a career record of 44-33 and has fanned 209 batters in 723.1 innings with a 2.82 ERA. |
