Most MVP diehards have moved on to The Show 08 on PS3 because after 4 years there is finally another great baseball game. There hasn't been a consensus "great" football game similar to The Show in the football genre. If Madden 09 is a great game, people will finally be able to forget about NFL2K5, which is a really sad statement for the NFL gaming industry (just Madden these days of course). There hasn't been a great football game since NCAA '04 and NFL2K5.

If you were to 100% mimic the NFL's situation to baseball and we only had MLB2K8 on the consoles this year, MVP would still be booming like no other.

As for what made MVP so great, it was a combination of basic/simple controls, realistic game play, great dynasty/owner mode, and most importantly the game was/is fun as hell to play. And after all the mods it is a virtually glitch-free game.

MVP 05 for the PC. The PC version of any game will always be easier to mod, and it's safe to say that MVP was the last major baseball game on that platform. PC Gamers now will also likely start playing Madden 08, simply because that's the last release of a football game for them. That doesn't mean that Madden 08 is a great game.

Meanwhile, on the Xbox and 360 we've had numerous incarnations of the Madden NFL series since 2K5. The fact that people like Finn put the time into hacking the Xbox file format just shows how dedicated the fanbase is. Even after the graphics have been grossly surpassed by the likes of EA Sports, the 2K5 fanbase still stays strong to an old game. Really, there's no comparison.
So just because a PC game is easier to mod means an Xbox game gets the nod? Doesn't make much sense to me, they're on equal grounds as far as I'm concerned and if you think the stuff the modders do for MVP is easy I suggest you take a long look at mvpmods.com and eamods.com.
