Certain USB memory sticks (thumb drive, drive drive, flashing drive, whatever the hell you need to call it) come with software installed on them. Unless my memory fails me, Cruzer is a big fan of putting software on their sticks that launches upon insertion. U3 or whatever it's called. Anyway, the stick will attempt to do this on the PS3 as well, because let's face it, Sony's machine is nothing more than a computer created for gaming purposes. Since the stick can't run it's start up program for whatever reason (conflict between the PS3 and U3 program no doubt), you won't be able to get your files on

All you need is a memory stick that has no programs that run on launch. It can have software come with it, but it can't be something as pervasive as the U3 launch thang. E.g., the Sony MicroVault sticks have software that allows you to compress the files, but nothing that launches it upon start. They're expensive though, so avoid Sony.

You could get a generic, 1 GB stick for very little. If you have a Staples nearby, I suggest you go there and get one of theirs. I used one for some time to transfer files to the PS3 and the stick was free (came bundled when I got rewritable DVDs).

I HOPE THIS HELPS
