Bah!
So, my PC died tonight, taking it with my Oakland Raiders dynasty, my DDSPB dynasties, and most infuriatingly, my FBCB Zeroed Out Dynasty with all the hours I put into editing the default and writing out the years that each school entered Division I.
Thankfully I still have my Mac laptop and was able to get Office 2011 with not only an awesome student discount, but downloaded. Saves my ass in terms of my final papers I have to write. All I gotta say is, fuck the virusmakers of the world.

even if your pc died, you can probably recover that data, unless the hard drive was corrupted beyond repair

Since my PC died this year, how is getting data from an old hard drive done? My PC was 5+ years old so I think it was more due to age versus a virus. There's not a lot I need from it, but I would like some of the documents and music files that I'm missing.

By one of these:
Newegg.com - APRICORN ADW-USB-KIT IDE/PATA/SATA to USB HDD Adapter Hook old hard drive up to it. Plug into new computer. Copy and paste. There are probably cheaper adapters out there, but that's small and works for everything. So it's what's been in my bag of tricks. Last edited by jeff061 : 12-04-2010 at 09:23 AM. |

You could of course just plug your old hard drive directly into your new computer, if you're ok with that.

I'd also recommend everyone get a USB flash drive to save stuff on (you can get them for under $10) or signup for something like www.dropbox.com.
Can never be too careful with your data and hard work. I save my OOTP and FM files almost daily to dropbox. |

I'll check into that, although it was throwing out all kind of bad sector errors and other things last night.

Oh and I'll also echo dropbox as a great thing. A bunch of us in the program here use it to share stuff.

You should be able to fix Windows. Have you tried booting from the disc and repairing it?

Not yet. Didn't think of that.

Boot to windows cd, the hit R for the recovery console and try chkdsk /r c: If the HD isn't toast, that command will take the data off the bad sectors and move them to the good sectors of your HD. It still might not boot after that, but then you can use the adapter jeff suggests. Windows 7 and an external HD makes backing up your HD (system image) a snap. With this option, if your HD dies, you just buy a new one, boot to the restore cd and restore the image - your pc is back exactly how you left it! |

I doubt it was a virus, then.
