FOOL-X 1983 Offseason Thread

The Indianapolis Clowns won their second FOOL-X title in their franchise history! It also was the first time in 15 years that someone other than London or Washington won it all from the Continental League!

This offseason also marks the first draft that our new expansion teams will participate in as they prepare for the expansion draft in a few seasons from now!

Now on to the 1982 Awards!

Plourde Takes Place Among Greats
Saturday, October 16th, 1982: In a ceremony witnessed by all the living members of the FOOL-X Hall of Fame, Raphaël Plourde stepped on the stage to join the game's immortals. During his 1788-game career batted .305, produced 335 home runs, 2220 hits and 1349 RBIs, while scoring 1130 times. The legendary third baseman, surrounded by his joyful family, looked on as his plaque went up on the wall of fame at baseball's shrine to its greatest players.

After the induction ceremony, one of the Hall of Famers notorious for doctoring the ball was asked how did he pitch to Plourde. "Greaseball, greaseball, greaseball, that's all I threw him... and he still hit them. He's the only player in baseball who consistently hit my grease. He saw the ball so well, I guess he could pick out the dry side."

FOOL-X Honors Belcham
Saturday, October 16th, 1982: A huge crowd watched Kevin Belcham become the newest member of the FOOL-X Hall of Fame today.

"I'm a big believer in whatever you want, if you want something out of this game, you've got to put the work in it. You've got to work hard," said the outstanding right fielder, whose new plaque described him as "an artisan with a bat whose daily pursuit of excellence produced a .327 lifetime batting average, 2415 hits and 81 home runs."

After the induction ceremony Belcham was asked what was the most thrilling moment in his career. He responded quickly, "No doubt about it, your first hit in the big leagues. That's tops. It means you're on your way. When you get the first hit, then you can get the rest."

The new file is up! Tomorrow morning is the start of free agency.

Also, if you haven't already, please look at the sticky at the top of the forum regarding FOOL-X holiday schedule. I will be traveling out of the country so it means 2 weeks or a little slower game play unfortunately.

Interesting note:

I had a guy accept arbitration and was happy with it. I had looked to resign him and he wanted around $2,000,000 in extension. He accepted arbitration and got $941,000. The player was MR Franklin Martin. Nice to see a player accept arbitration once in a while.

For personal reasons, ekcut had to drop his online leagues for a while, hopefully he will be back to join us soon!

Please welcome ShoelessJ03 as the new owner of the London Bishops. I've heard good things about him, he has been lurking in these forums for a while and we've had some good conversations via PM up until now as well as he patiently has waited for some time to join FOOL-X. I feel confident that he will be a good addition to our community!

The new file is up!

Expansion teams have been added for the Amateur Draft, since the game does not let me re-order the draft until the actual draft date, don't panic when you see the draft order.

This year's draft order is:

1) Cleveland
2) Balzac
3) Spring
4) Boston
5) London
6) Ann Arbor
7) Cumberland
8) Portland
9) Stafford
10) Havana
11) New York
12) Washington
13) Mexico City
14) Indianapolis
15) Maricopa
16) Virginia Beach

Tomorrow morning is Spring training / Amateur Draft and Free Agency Stage 2!

Alan, Bedard was a type A FA i only see the compensation round pick from Balzac. Did something go wrong game wise ? I am going just off your posts so I may be a little early in asking.

I see now I didn't look far enough down lol.

EDIT:I take that back I didn't get the pick from Balzac at all. Not a big deal I am happy with getting the comp pick. I didn't expect to get anything but just note it.

Question for you guys.

Do the incentive clauses in contracts count towards the salary cap?

No they don't. They only go against the bottom line.

We also don't have any rules specifically regarding clauses (We used to but it sucked alot of the fun out of the game). We do have a gentleman's agreement in the FOOL leagues to not do anything exploitative or unrealistic with the incentives. I reserve the right to reject deals due to incentives that are crazy, or ruin everyone's fun by putting back in old FOOL rules regarding incentives if we have to. (Not pointing this at you, just figured this a good place to mention it before anyone gets any ideas)

Should I have gotten my 2nd round pick? SP G. Suárez was a type A FA that I signed. While my 1st is protected due to my slot, shouldn't his former team have gotten a sup and my 2nd?

Yes, yes.. it seems a few teams didn't get 2nd round picks that they should have. I'm a bit tied up right now so will have to figure out a time to look through and see what didn't happen correctly there.

Since the draft already occured, I'll have to figure out a fair way of handling it as well. (I can't simply add more supplemental picks)

Actually it only took me 5 seconds to see what happened.

It was my fault that it occured, not a game bug. Just wanted to let everyone know that before they broke out the pitchforks and torches and headed to Germany.

I'll have to manually go through and see which teams I screwed up and then work out the compensation for it. It likely will have to be in next year's draft. I'll post once I have it figured out. (Will likely be later today as I'm completely swamped with work today)

Couldn't you just move the players between the teams that were drafted?

I was supposed to have Spring's 2nd, so just give me the player they drafted in the 2nd.

No matter how I do it, someone is likely going to get upset. There are some people who only like to draft certain type of players. I can speak as someone who pretty much got handed a player that another team drafted when I got shafted long ago in the original FOOL, that I wasn't very happy at all about it but the other owner was a classless jerk, so I just agreed to it to just make everyone (except myself) happy. I don't want to put anyone in that position is all.

I'm sorry that I messed this up, was a mistake on my part that caused this. What I am going to do is award these compensation picks in next year's draft and just leave this one completed as is. I'll send out PMs to the affected owners just to make sure no one misses it. Since we're not talking any first round picks here at least it won't be the difference between a superstar player or not.

These are the picks that I see were messed up. If I am missing one here, someone please PM me with the player name and I'll research it. I believe this list is complete however:

Balzac 2nd round -> Mexico City
Boston 2nd round -> Ann Arbor
Spring 2nd round -> Indianapolis
Balzac 3rd round -> New York
Balzac 4th round -> Washington

If Indy wants the guy I picked in the 2nd as fair compensation, he can have him. I wasn't planning on having that pick so I don't think I had the guys in the draft list that far anyway.

If both owners are ok with that as compensation, that is fine, and I'll do that instead for your two teams. Just let me know as I'm happy letting you all work out deals as well.

I'll take the guy Balzac picked in Round 4 as well if that's ok. That way Balzac doesn't have to worry about signing FA next year.

I'll do whatever is easiest. I had other players ahead of Balzac's 2nd round pick but it's no biggie if I'm simply handed that guy.

That said, I'd prefer an extra pick next season but won't be chafed if that doesn't happen.

Am I missing something? I still can't download the new file. And I presume once I do, like last night, I will be unable to upload the file.

Hopefully someone knows a fix to this, because it would be a pain in the but to do a fresh full file download every night to produce a manual export.
