After a slow start, the defending FOOL Champion are back in the thick of things. In the RL, it is an oddly familiar sight from days long gone.. Hartford vs Colorado fighting for the playoff spot. |

Ann Arbor is running away with things in the Republic League, but Chico is creeping back into the mix to try to compete for the playoff spot. Starting Pitcher Emmett Quero (Montreal) set the single season best ERA record last year with a 2.07. This year halfway through the season, his ERA is an amazing 1.77! The next best ERA in either league is Hasegawa in the RL who has a 2.53 |

A horrific 5-24 July knocks Hartford out of contention for this season. Montreal however inches closer to trying to keep the Charm out of the playoffs. |

Boston 6, Baltimore 2 Daniel Gil and Carlos Galvez both hit their 35th home runs of the season for Boston as they torch Baltimore's ace Morgan Weighill. Weighill, who went 25-5 last season had a rough year this year with a 12-17 record. Some may wonder if this is the beginning of the end for him as he will turn 36 years old in two days. The loss means Montreal can clinch a playoff spot with a win, and they will have the best pitcher in the universe Emmett Quero starting for them -------------------------------------------------- Edmonton vs Montreal: Quero pitches well, only giving up one run in 6.2innings but Rodriguez matches him pitch for pitch for the Edmonton Edge. After 7 innings, the score is tied up 1-1.... |

The top of the 8th is uneventful, but in the bottom of the inning, with Montreal batting Oliva starts off with a flyout. Then Orlando singles between third and short to start a rally. He is pinch ran for by Javier Sanchez who proceeds to steal both second and third base!
Coronado up to bat, a deep fly ball to left-center field... will be caught. The runner tags... the throw home... is late, the run scores to put Montreal up 2-1. The next hitter Dale Bryan is hit by a pitch and both benches are warned, the next hit batter will mean ejections... The tensions are high but Rodriguez gets Kane Weighell to fly out to right field to end the inning. Daniel Mayer comes in to pitch the top of the 9th for the Majestics to try to close out the game. He pitches the count full vs Pierce but then loses him with ball four. With 1 on and no outs, Edmonton brings in a pinch hitter Ricardo Salinas to hit. The 2-2 count, grounded to short.. over to second and on to first. Double Play! Two outs and no body on, another full count walk is given, this time to Scott Mason. This brings up Ricardo Lopez with two outs.. First pitch called strike... second pitch swung and miss.. strike two.. Third pitch.. It's right in there, Lopez doesn't move his bat.... BALL called by the ump Fourth pitch.. a 1-2 count.. Fast ball, swung on and hit.. HIGH in the air... but not very deep. This one won't get out of the infield. The Shortstop is under it, and catches it.. That is the ball game. Montreal has clinched a playoff spot! |

Thanks for the sweet recap of Montreal's playoff push. It was especially nice to see Javier Sanchez pinch run and steal 2nd and 3rd before scoring on the sac fly.

Huh, I knew my team wasn't much better than past versions, but I admit I am disappointed in this year's performance. I was really hoping to at least repeat last year's .500-plus performance. That's a shame. Well, I hope the kids are ready. They were close at the start of the season. Will they be ready to take on roles now?
Congrats to the playoff teams and good luck!!

My pitching really sucks. Not sure how Max Collins made the All-Star roster over Yufi Jen, but we continue to be dead last in all key pitching stats. And no help in sight, most of my pitching draft picks aren't doing as well as I'd hoped.
On the plus side, all 3 of my all-star hitters are willing to sign extensions.

Wow, we really saved our season by going 21-7 in August. I feel like my teams have been getting off to slow starts lately. Maybe it is because they are getting old, or maybe my starters are not getting enough at bats in spring training?
Really nice job on the updates Alan, they made for some good reading. Congratulations to all the playoff teams for a job well done! |

I mentioned this to a few people before, but don't remember if it was this league or on AIM, or in PMs or what. When your team either gets on a hot streak early then fades, or stars cold but then heats up, there are a few different things that you can look at to figure out if they might be a reason for it: 1) Luck: Like it or not, there is some randomness built in. (Re-sim the same day hundreds of times and you'll always get different results). Maybe you just got unlucky 2) Offseason Rust: All players have significant rust during the offseason that means when the season starts each year they are not in full season form. How much spring training is needed to remove all of the rust? Reportedly if you have your starters in for the entire spring period, they should wear most of it off with the typical spring usage. (Pitchers only go 3-4 innings a game, hitters only get a few innings of play each game, etc). Most of the time you have to balance risking a spring injury with playing time, but in this league with no injuries that really is not a factor. The only reason to hold back a player in the spring is to try to get more at bats for a youngster, but then you likely will experience many april games where a veteran is underperforming. 3) Age of players: A player that is over the hill but has no spring rust left, will likely play well during the start of the season, but as their age catches up to them, their ratings and stats tend to fade towards the end of the season. Likewise a young prospect sometimes have to play into their ratings some. They might start off the season slow but eventually by mid-season start looking to be a glimpse of the future star that they might be. 4) Matchups: The schedule can sometimes end up setting up some weird statistical fluxes. Do you have a primarily lefty hitting lineup but play a good chuck of games in parks that are tough on leftys early in the season? Do you have an August stretch with 10 games against the top team in the league at their park? 5) Player fatigue: As the season wears on, players will get tired, and at times can cause some really weird player substitutions. Do you ever see at the end of the season where your no glove third baseman ended up playing 3 games at Shortstop during the season despite not even being listed in the depth chart at the position? Having one or two pieces out of place can affect the entire team. That can cause your pitching to suffer, your bullpen to be over-taxed and start off a rough string of games. I'm sure there are other reasons to look at as well, but usually one of those five are what I would look at to try to determine why a team faded or started slowly. |

Thank you for the information Alan. This will definitely help improve my managing!
I am exported for the playoffs already. I'm thinking it might be my turn to get lucky and win a playoff series, but Ann Arbor is a powerhouse. I think I really botched my negotiations with Hector Romero. He has now raised his asking price to $9.6 Million/Year. I offered him 4 Years/$40 Million. Hopefully he will take it. |

I had Romero hit in the lead off spot during the regular season, because he had the highest OBP of any of my hitters last year...and it affected his stats in some interesting ways.
He got 50 more at bats, which is the advantage of having your best hitter hit in the leadoff spot...but his VORP was almost cut in half. His RBI's dropped by 30. It looks like he did indeed get more AB's in the leadoff spot, but that they were worth less than his AB's in the 3-4 hole. There seems to be an obvious reason for this. There were not as many runners on base when he came up to bat in the leadoff spot, so he was not able to drive in as many runs as he normally would and thus was not worth as much to the team as he was in past seasons. So this little experimented proved to me that you should have your RBI guys hit in the 3-4 spot not the lead off spot...duh! Last edited by buckinbranco : 04-20-2009 at 12:01 PM. |

I don't think the position that he batted mattered much at all. I haven't seen any evidence of batting order protection in OOTP. Instead I think Romero just had a bad year. His VORP cut in half because previous years his VORP was astronomically off of the charts (as you would expect from a 3 time Tanaka award winner). His VORP this year of nearly 60 still puts him as one of the better players in the league (top 10). Romero's problem is that even though his number of at bats went up, his actual hitting was worse. In 60 more at bats, he had 10 less hits 5 or so less doubles and homers and 20 less walks than 3 seasons before. To top things off, the last two seasons he was 7 for 9 in stealing bases. This year he was 9 for 16 which put him into the range of being counter-productive on the base paths. I hope he just had a bad season, as I think he could be something special. Since the development reports are still running, I can't check to see if he actually has had rating drops or if it was bad luck. |
