Damn! Laid off

Shit as I suspected I just got laid off from the firm I was an Information Security Risk Manager at. Well, I guess I will see first hand what the new stimuls bill will do for the unemployed.

Seems like the last position I'd want to go terminating if I were laying folks off, but that's just me.

Sorry to hear it, but there's a chance that you can come back, right? Also when you're laid off, do you lose benefits?

Unfortunately I can not come back for a two year period per the separation agreement I took which was only a month but not bad since I was only with these guys for a year. I got benefits until the end of May and if needed can get the Cobra benefits for med/dental after that by paying out of pocket. The job market is really bad from the feelers I put out today and online. My field has been in the past very easy to find not only another job but always a better one than the last. I got a master degree and about 10 IT related certs including a Project Manager one but even so it does not look like an easy job market.

Yup, and there is nearly nil as far as well paying jobs in the six figures available now.

Well, the best of luck to you. At least you have benefits until the end of May. I'd hate for something really bad to happen health-wise without benefits.

Well, coming from Massachusetts Colorado is anything but vibrant as far the job opportunites compared to back there at least in my field but I am sure it is better than most places.

ARGH! Dude, I am so sorry. Keep your head up and your ears open. I've been through this 3 times - this is #4 - and nothing beats a positive attitude when it comes time to finding a new position.

I'll tip a cold one back in your honor tonight.

Small update on my job search. I had my first interview for a great VP job. It is as close as ajob can be to a dream job for me. The interview was three hours and I think it went real well. I was the last interviewed of 9 candidates that made it past the resume prescreening. They plan on choosing two people to come in to meet with the SVP of the department who just so happens to be a retired FBI agent. I am laready practicing cleaning up any body language "tells" since from what the interviewers told me he likes to study peoples boidy language for cues.

Best of luck.

If you need info on how to avoid body tells, I'd recommend "Read 'Em and Reap" by Joe Navarro. He's a retired FBI agent who interrogated and was trained on that stuff. It's actually a poker tell book, but the information in the book has actually been useful at my workplace too. Not a tough read and a relatively short book.

Kindof curious to check that out. While at Amazon, I also saw:
Amazon.com: Weed 'Em and Reap: A Weed Eater Reader: Roger Welsch: Books

Apparently it's about making food based on weeds you can find in the forest. Who knew?

Yeah, I didn't see his analysis, but I watched that interview. After reading the book, you can quickly see a lot of tells that ARod obviously didn't know he had. It's amazing how much information a person gives without even knowing it. The problem is that most people don't even know how to look for that information.

Similarly, I see all kinds of things at work from my co-workers that I never noticed before. You can quickly tell if someone's lying or uncomfortable with something you're asking them to do. Amazing stuff.

If MBBF interprets body language the same way he interprets other sources of information I'd love to see an Office-style documentary around that workplace.

MBBF: "Why are you lying to me?"
Co-Worker: "What the hell are you talking about?"
MBBF: "When I asked you how you were doing today, you said "fantastic!" and gave me a nervous smile. Nervous smiles hide lies. Why not just tell the truth?"
Co-Worker: "That was not a nervous smile, it was a normal smile. I'm feeling fantastic and I was smiling about it"
MBBF: "It was a nervous smile, I can tell."
Co-Worker: "It was not a nervous smile, it was a normal smile. Ask Jane, she saw it."
Jane: "Ya, that was a normal smile"
Co-Worker: "See? Normal smile"
MBBF: "Oh really? Then why aren't you smiling now?"
Co-Worker: "Fuck off"

I just got laid off yesterday too.

I've never been so down. I actually had to apply for unemployment for the first time, and it was pretty depressing.

Sorry to hear the economy got you two guys also. Its going tog et worse before it gets better.

Schmidty: As long as you worked more than 6 months straight you have no reason at all to feel bad about applying for unemployment. You paid into the system and that system is now going to help take care of you while you look for a new job.

There's honestly not a single bit of poker strategy regarding the cards. It's mostly just about body language at a table, which can translate directly to the meeting room. The same mannerisms are displayed at meeting room tables.

If you aren't interested in that book, he has another book titled 'What Every Body Is Saying'. You can find that at Amazon or any online retailer as well. It's tilted more towards general behavior. Both are very good reads. He's an entertaining writer.

Either book is great as it educates you on the subtle behaviors that people have while also letting you know how to mask those behaviors when needed.

Well, I have finally landed on my feet just in time with my severance running out I just agreed in principle to a job offer for a Director of IT Security. I say in principle only because they have to get my salary approved by their Board but that appears to just be protocol. Overall I am real happy since this is my dream job position and the company has alot of room for growth plus (not bragging) the compensation is a modest 5% over my last job. So for others out there keep whom are unemployed keep your heads down and you will get a break.

Congrats!

I know several IT people who lost their job recently. Every one of them found work within a few weeks, with a better position and more pay. It's interesting.

Great news!

Here's hoping that a lot of firms went into panic mode and fired too many people too quickly, and now will have to start rehiring.
