1975 Fool Classic Thread
Looking at the numbers, it seems that Chicago should be the heavy favorite here. I've made a few adjustments which I won't discuss at the moment, but I'm going to go against my own hopes and predict Chicago in 7.
But don't tell my team that... ![]() |

I've been doing a bit more research. My performance this year was a dramatic 11 over the pyth. Curious about how this worked out, I looked at my game record. I'm 17-6 (.739!) in extra innings and 40-12 (.769!!) in one-run games. I tried going through my box scores to see how much those two sets overlapped, but some of the games in my schedule list linked to other games' boxes, making it difficult or impossible. (WTF? Stupid OOTP.)
I'm going to do some comparisons, but primarily on one-run games, because I'm lazy and there's no simple way to seperate the extra-inning games. Team: 1R W-L (.avg) [1R/XI] Toronto: 40-12 (.769) [52/23] Valdosta: 24-25 (.490) [49/13] Rio Grande: 26-24 (.520) [50/17] Atlanta: 23-29 (.442) [52/20] New York: 29-27 (.518) [56/11] Texas: 21-26 (.447) [47/19] Baltimore: 23-36 (.390) [59/19] Brooklyn: 24-31 (.436) [55/20] Here's an ordered list of how each team's performance in the clutch differed from its overall record: Toronto: +.165 New York: +.050 Brooklyn: +.014 Rio Grande: +.001 Texas: -.021 Atlanta: -.045 Baltimore: -.052 Valdosta: -.101 I'm going to make up a new stat here, and call it CLUTCH: It's the above difference between a team's performance in one-run games and its overall record, times 1000 to make it easy. This gives the following CLUTCH results for 1975 CL teams: Toronto: 165 New York: 50 Brooklyn: 14 Rio Grande: 1 Texas: -21 Atlanta -45 Baltimore: -52 Valdosta: -101 (Statistical note: I plotted these results against each team's difference from its expected record, and found a positive correlation with a p-value of .0047 (two-sided). It definitely seems that a team's record in one-run games can be a very strong predictor of performance over or under expectations. This is perhaps unsurprising, but interesting to see confirmed, albeit over a very small data-set) Regardless, it seems that a good chunk of my team's ability to beat the expected record may be because of excellent performance in very close ballgames. This indicates that my positive performance over the pythagorean prediction may be because of good clutch hitting rather than "luck". I'd be interested in doing some more analysis to work on this and break out some metrics for it, but I'm sure some saber geek somewhere has already done this, no? ANYWAY, I just had a quick look at Chicago's performance in similar games. With a one-run record of 20-20, their PORG (Percentage of One-Run Games -- I just made that up right now, do you like it?) is .260 with an ORGR (One-Run Game Record) of .500 and a CLUTCH of -78. Toronto's PORG is .338, with an ORGR of .769. This indicates that, while Chicago gets into fewer tight games, their performance in clutch situations is worse than their performance overall. I have not yet looked at their player breakdown to see if that would give a good explanation for this general trend, but it bodes well for Toronto if the classic games are low-scoring. TL;DR: If my pitching can keep games close, my odds, as I see them, of winning the classic are a good bit higher than raw numbers may indicate. This turned into a bit more of a general stats monologue than something terribly relevant to the Classic, but I thought it might be worth sharing. Last edited by kaosfere : 09-13-2008 at 03:10 PM. |

Dola, nice, DC. If you have time, any chance I could see that with 1975 right-justified and balanced by "TORONTO" or "TOR" on the left? Not sure if that would look good, or crap.

Looks good. Thanks! ![]() I may do some more fiddling with numbers regarding clutch performance this weekend. Right now I need to straighten up the house a bit and make ready to go out. My wife and I need to go out tonight ( ) to spend some time with a depressed friend, so I might not be around for the big games. I'll be following on my iphone as time allows, though! |

Is this a league of agoraphobics or what? I felt the same way last night about having to go out with wife and her sister.
I guess we won't be planning a league get together any time soon. ![]() |

I really enjoy the stats monologue. Totally gonna blog about it over at Immersinik now. I'm convinced a new business of sabermetrics based on fake baseball modeling is upon us.

It's astounding that a team that was 7th in the CL in hitting has made it to the Classic. Even more astounding that their pitching was as hard core as it was. They don't have the lowest BVORP of any Classic potential-champion, that goes to the '63 and '64 Terriers. Those teams couldn't hit worth a lick in an era, where that was a huge thing. But they had the pitching to make up for it.
This year's Toronto club is in the same mold. Last edited by Young Drachma : 09-13-2008 at 07:06 PM. |

I think we should keep the Sunday sim in place, but that it'd be delightful to start simming the Classic on Saturday night. Or at least, reserving the option to do so.
That's just me being eager.... |

oh! The Classic is Sunday, not Saturday. I plum forgot! Hasn't been an issue for me yet. :P. If you want to run it tonight, I'm exported and ready. I'd be fine waiting though. Tipsy and on my phone and I think we're crashing at a friends tonight. Tomorrow probably preferable. No big either way though.

The only problem is, I might be on the road tomorrow night when I'm scheduled to do the sim. So I might do it tonight. It won't affect anything since VL players don't FA until November now and there will still be a sim tomorrow night for people to offer extensions like normal.

The main problem was, people worried that it replaced the Sunday sim. Once we solidifed that it wouldn't replace the Sunday sim and that we could do it early -- to give me flexibility -- then it wasn't as much of a problem. But the VL FAs caused an issue to it, because it gave people an extra chance to sign them. But now that we've pushed them back to November, there isn't really anything that gets effected by it. The box scores and game logs are uploading to the web site (another 6000 files or so....) and so, I won't be doing anything until then. At least another 45 minutes. |

Hey guys just checking in. I survived Ike, but its left among the 3-4 million w/o power. I'm currently posting via my blackberry, and its data service was very spotty during daylight. I'll fire up my laptop and try to post manual instructions for my team before sim time, but if you don't hear from me before then, please just use some good judgement on how to handle my team. If it continues to look bad powerwise for the week, maybe someone else can run the team this season? CR? I'd like to keep the team, but just may not be able to export for a week. Let me know on the forums, because PMs are a pain on the blackberry.

Okay...here we go. I won't be around tomorrow night until later, so I want to do this now so it's up there. There will be a new file out and then you can download that and tomorrow night's sim will still happen as normal, just no Classic since it'll have been done already. (We'll sim seven days tomorrow night, FYI.)

Big congrats to DC. The comeback is now complete.
And a nod toward kaosfere, too, who himself has taken a team from the depths all the way to the Classic. Well done, both of you.

OK, now that I'm back home and not typing on my phone:
Very nice series, DC. Looking at the game records, it definitely seems like my pitching failed me. My lead closer blew both of the save attempts he got, and Sachi Yamada gave up 8 runs on 7 hits (!) on the way to a loss in both of the games he started. Way to fold under pressure, big guy! Glad I'm only paying you $440k a year. I'm not sure this says more about my pitching or your hitting, DC, but I'm pretty sure the credit goes to your boys, especially considering your team's hitting performance during the regular season. (How about Artie Wiley, though, with his CG shutout in game 1? And 8 innings of knock-out baseball in game 5? 1 run in 17 innings against arguably the best hitting team in FOOL. He's worth every penny.) Regardless, much credit to you for a great season and for turning a stinker into a champion. A tip of my hat to you sir.

I am proud of my team and how it got put together. I mean, I was still aggressive, but the bulk of the club is home grown guys and others who I overpaid for when others didn't want to. So I'm happy with it. I think that it's always kinda bittersweet when I win titles. But...that said, this one is the nicest of all of 'em, because well...there was a time when I didn't know if we'd ever get things turned around.
I feared far more from your ballclub for sure, your pitching staff is scary and they were clutch when it mattered most. So you gave us a heck of a series and for sure, getting Wiley was the differencemaker for you, no doubt. You've got a great foundation up there. |
