Better check that peanut butter
Yeah, I know, it's all over the news & you knew about it already. But this was the first time I can ever remember actually having some food product that was being recalled. I happened to remember there was a small jar of Peter Pan in the cupboard, sure enough, the code matched the recall. Just never had that happen to me before.

Well, that's the odd thing about this for me: I either buy Jif or Skippy probably 90% of the time ... except for a small jar of PP Light I bought a few months ago. Happily, it had barely been touched since I had bought a jumbo jar of one of our regular brands since then (explaining why the recalled jar was in the back of the cupboard).

Hmmm, just checked the almost finished jar of Peter Pan in the cabinet...same code.
And wouldn't they all have that code, since there's only one plant? |

You can return the product for a refund. How much cost/hassle is involved in that, I don't know, but my wife wasn't interested. We had a jar, too, and in fact, my wife had just finished a sandwich when I called to tell her to check it. But we were 75% through the jar, so if there was anything in there, we probably would have been sickened by it before yesterday. Our 7 year old is getting a sore throat and became convinced it was the peanut butter when she found out we had to throw it away because it could make us "sick." ![]()

Another "side story" that's interesting out of this is the whole brand name vs. generic thing. If this isn't proof that there's no reason to spend more for brand name over generic, I don't know what is. There's only one plant making this stuff, and it's both Peter Pan and Wal Mart brands. Same stuff. And yet we'll all likely go back to buying Peter Pan for X cents more a jar rather than saving money on the Great Value brand.

There's no difference between Peter Pan and Wal-Mart. But, that's different than what say JIF tastes like. If anyone that knows a generic brand that uses the same recipe as JIF, sign me up!

I grew up on JIF, but my wife is a Peter Pan person. That's one of those battles I have chosen to avoid.

I know we've recently had this thread, but there is no issue about chunky peanut butter in our house. We've got both - one's called Peter Pan creamy, the other is called dry roasted peanuts.

We had it too. There's an address you can send your lid to in order to request a refund. It didn't say whether you had to send in your receipt. We just bought one of the large sizes 2 weeks ago...bah!
Of course, the wifey eats that crap. I prefer Skippy Extra Chunky.

There was a poll/thread about creamy/chunky. If I want chunky, I'll just eat peanuts. Peanut butter should be exactly what it is - smooth.

Same here. I remember a teacher telling us in like fifth grade that generic brands are usually made by name companies, just labeled differently. And I'm all about saving money...

Was about to make the obligatory Peter Pan joke until I realized that Skippy doesn't sound much better.
Don't use that brand but thanks for the info. |

I'd never thought about that before, but you're right. There's probably a big market out there for a brand of peanut butter with a testosterone-fueled name--one that real he-men would prefer to buy and eat. Maybe the company that makes Brawny paper towels should get into the peanut butter business?

Well, there's no issue at our house. Our oldest daughter has a mild peanut allergy so we don't have any peanut butter anymore. (Kills my wife as she loves her PB+J)

So, did anyone on the forum eat the 'contaminated' peanut butter, or know someone who did and got sick?

Sounds like a store problem unrelated to the recall. Our Kroger's in particular are still pushing the hell out of their storebrand PB weeks later, with no less than two end cap displays in different parts of the store as well as increased shelf space.

Not sure. There is only one "grocery store" within a 25 minute drive and its a "Super"Wal-Mart. SO for our bi-weekly groceries its wally world with a monthly trip elsewhere for meat. Since the recall there has been very little PB on the shelf. 2 weeks ago it was only reese's (and only tiny travel size jars, wife bought 8) and this week it was none. This has been compounded by my 6 year old deciding recently that any lunch that doesnt contain PB is inedible. I solved the problem by going to a real grocery store this AM near work and getting a few jars, But I wonder how long until PP returns... I may need to google that info... |

Going to be a while. A week or two ago they found the salmonella strain in the plant itself. Lowe's store-brand PB was sort of okay, and the "Simply" JIF my wife accidentally bought (the one with 1/3 less sugar and less sodium) tastes like cardboard. I miss PP, although we'll keep checking (and give real JIF a try).

This thread is much more entertaining if you substitute Shorty for Skippy.
