Mentor Observation
A small tidbit I just noticed that I'm not sure was previously mentioned. In the GEFL, RT Joe Peterson just became a mentor to offensive tackles. With a hole in my right guard slot, I attempted to move him over there. After moving him, he was no longer a mentor.
What does it mean? Probably nothing. However, it could mean that a player has to stay at a specific position to retain his mentor status. This could be more meaningful to older guys on the offensive/defensive line or linebackers who usually are changed without a little bit of a skill hit, but you might eliminate the potential that they will eventually become mentors. |

Any player moved to a new position group is stripped of his mentor status.
My best guess is that there is some sort of a "dice roll" at the start of each season, factoring in the player's experience, leadership, and intelligence (and maybe other things) that determines whether the player becomes a mentor. It does not seem to be a fully predictable outcome -- there doesn't seem to be a perfect formula for whether he receives the tag -- only that players with high ratings in those areas and plenty of experience have an increased chance of getting the mentor tag. If he gets the tag, he keeps it unless he is moved out of his position. I have seen switched players become mentors at their new positions, but I have no idea whether there's something in-game to make it more or less likely that a former G mentor would become a T mentor in the following year. |

I thought this was highly common knowledge?
And yes, i have seen an OLB Mentor turn into an ILB Mentor, but the following season, of course. |

I don't think there is any randomness, actually, I think there is a factor we are missing (in addition to experience, leadership, intelligence and wants winner). I once reloaded a game in which I noticed someone changing mentor status. They became a mentor all mid-30's times I reloaded, at which point I decided there was no randomness and gave up the experiment. I think its a deterministic formula, I just don't think we've figured it out, and there is perhaps a rating hidden from us which would make that impossible.

Certainly possible that it's a clear-cut formula we just haven't cracked yet. Exp, Ldr, and Int are clearly all related, but that might not be all, and the missing element(s) would explain how we can't yet fully predict who gets the tag.

A hidden rating would be my best guess, because you see a lot of guys that should be mentors who aren't, or take far longer than you expect to become one.

Does it prove it conclusively? No. Am I convinced? Absolutely. I have had several discussions on this with people, and have yet to see someone tell of an example where the non-mentor to mentor transition changed upon reloading the game.
