Final Sagarin Ratings

http://www.kiva.net/~jsagarin/sports/cfsend.htm

Texas finishes with a higher rating than 2001 Miami.

Allow me my pleasure.

Notice that our Points rating is lower but our ELO rating is higher. Meaning that his system evaluates 2001 Miami as a more powerful team but 2005 Texas as having "accomplished more" in a way.

Are the ratings transferrable from year to year, though, as anything other than a measure of capability relative to peers? I wouldn't guess so.

Strength relative to peers is the only reasonable way to compare teams from different years.

Well, yes, I agree with that, I guess I'm just concerned that even then, it will be possible to draw unjustified conclusions about the relative strengths of teams from different years.

Sagarin really didn't like the SEC much. I don't think that's unreasonable, although it might be a bit overdone. Michigan had a brutal schedule, with seven games against the top 30 (three against top 10) compared to only four for Georgia (two against top 10).

Yep, the Big Ten was the strongest conference in the nation by every ratings system I've seen. And that doesn't disagree with what I saw.

Anyway, also note that the teams in that range are pretty close ratings wise. The difference between Michigan and Georgia is 1.13 ratings points. That's small compare to some other 4-position gaps higher up in the rankings.

The 11-20 group is separated by only 2.41 points. Less than the 21-30 grouping and less than the majority of 10-position groups.

Well, Sagarin's rankings include also Div 1AA teams. I think that pulled down the SEC's overall ranking. Instead of using a stock value to represent all Div. 1AA teams, they are factored and ranked the same as Div. 1A schools. Since the 12 teams in the SEC played 13 games against 1AA schools and teams from the Sun Belt conference, that has a pretty large effect, especially once you factor in the schedule of your opponents and their opponent's opponents.
