Explosion near Oklahoma University Stadium
Detail are still shaky. One person believe to be dead, possibly a suicide bombing.

From Staff Reports
NORMAN -- An explosion near the University of Oklahoma's Gaylord Family-Memorial Stadium killed one person Saturday, OU officials said. The explosion happened at the courtyard near the George Lynn Cross Hall, Botany-Microbiology Building on OU's campus, which is west of the stadium, according to Sgt. Gary Robinson of the University police department. The explosion happened during the second quarter of Oklahoma's game against Kansas State. After the explosion, police set up a perimeter of several blocks and made fans exit the stadium to the east.

Something doesn't sound right. According to the recap, the game continued on. If the explosion was around halftime and they evacuated the stadium 30 minutes later, did the not stop the game?

According to MSNBC, they were not ALLOWED to exit the game to the west until 30 minutes later. I do not think they evacuated the stadium at all, just when the explosion occured they shut down the exits to the west of the stadium. Quote:

I read "people were allowed out" as meaning evac.

I was there, we were't evacuated...I did hear the stadium was in lockdown as they searched the area where the bomb was (which was adjacent to the west side of the stadium).

they were saying that it affected the area near the microbiology lab. It was wierd, because the Game on TV made no mention of it. Late in the 4th quarter as we were coming home and listening to the game, David Boren gave a short message about the incident, but was very careful about not describing what happened, and just said it was a law enforcement issue, and to avoid the west side of the stadium between lindsey and the library.

The news is now calling the incident an individual suicide.
NORMAN -- An explosion near the University of Oklahoma's Gaylord Family-Memorial Stadium killed one person Saturday, OU officials said. A statement from OU president David Boren called the explosion "an individual suicide." The identity of the person killed is not known. The explosion happened at the courtyard near the George Lynn Cross Hall, Botany-Microbiology Building on OU's campus, which is west of the stadium, according to Sgt. Gary Robinson of the University police department. A smaller, second device was found in the area and detonated by police at 9:05 p.m. The first explosion happened during the second quarter of Oklahoma's game against Kansas State. "We had no idea of any threat this week," Robinson said. After the explosion, police set up a perimeter of several blocks and swept the Asp Avenue parking garage. Police also brought in their hazardous device unit, which was already at the game.

From a poster at OUfans.com:
I now know that the homicide bomber did try and get into Oklahoma Stadium, he was turned away because no knapsacks are allowed. He then proceeded to the quietess area of little or no traffic he could find, the buses obscured him partially and he apparently did not see anyone actually on the bus. The bus driver saw this entire event. The reason he was on the bench was to remove the explosives from his bag and was in the process of strapping the explosives on his person when the bomb went off. The second explosion that occurred was the police blowing up his knapsack. I was curious why there was an unattended knapsack in that area. There seems to be no question he was intent on killing us, not himself. The apartment complex he lived in houses a large muslim population and if you saw todays picture of him, he he was sporting a beard, no mustache. Impeccable source on this info.(his words) |

Student identified in blast outside football game
Monday, October 3, 2005; Posted: 12:56 p.m. EDT (16:56 GMT) Joel Henry Hinrichs III
RELATED
NORMAN, Oklahoma (AP) -- A University of Oklahoma student with "emotional difficulties" was identified Sunday as the person who apparently committed suicide near a packed football stadium using an explosive attached to his body. The remains were believed to be those of Joel Henry Hinrichs III, according to Salvador Hernandez, special agent in charge of the FBI in Oklahoma. University President David Boren has said the blast was an apparent suicide. "We know that he has had what I would call emotional difficulties in the past," Boren said. "There is certainly no evidence at this point which points to any other kind of motivation other than his personal problems." Hinrichs, 21, was killed when the explosive device detonated Saturday evening near Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, where more than 84,000 people were watching a football game between the Oklahoma Sooners and Kansas State. No spectators were injured. The game continued without interruption, and no announcement was made until the final minutes. Spectators were kept from leaving until about 30 minutes after the blast. Part of the student apartment complex where Hinrichs lived was evacuated after the explosion. Boren said residents would not be allowed to return until authorities knew the area was safe. "They're going through everything with a fine-toothed comb," he said. http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/10/03/okl....ap/index.html |

Another newsreport stated that he was emotionally unstable and had no friends, but at this point anything is possible.

Anyone who calls himself an "impeccable source" should be immediately discounted. I can only assume the bomber grew the beard (which by impliciation makes him a terrorist of course) after the photo the police released was taken. One might think too that if he laid the knapsack full of explosives down near him while he strapped on explosives, that the explosion would have destroyed that knapsack. But wh knows? |

The FBI released a statement say that the guy has no connection to any known terrorist group, and had no connection with anyone else that might be planning the same thing
