Thumbs up THE Great Raid: A lesson in Company level Operations.

Just saw THE Great Raid tonite and I must say I am impressed. The movie was pretty accurate (as per reading Ghost Soldiers). The movie pretty much retold the story and events that lead up to and during the Raid on Cabanatuan. the movie also showed the resistance and the dangers that they encountered during the war.....(Hospital scene ).

The movie also captured the complexities of planning for a Company Level Operation. I loved how Cpt. Prince coordinated his plan as an Operations Order, and explained the Mission and Objectives to his subordinates and attached guerrilla units. The action was pretty gritty and accurate too, It's probably the first time in a war movie where I hear and see a platoon providing covering fire, shift its fire as another platoon takes an objectve. Overall it is the most accurate war movie I have ever seen. Sure dramatic license was used for time and editing purposes but it conveyed the events.

Wow you must have been one of the only people seeing this movie, I saw that it only took in $2.4 million! I wondered how good it would be since I knew the studio had kept it on the shelf for three years before releasing it. May go see it if I have a chance.

I told you it was good.

I probably won't get to see this in theaters, but I'll be all over the DVD.

There were at least 100 people in the theater when we saw it. Dont really know why it was killed by the critics and why it grossed so low. It really was a good movie.

The reason it grossed so low is that it did not open in many places. It opened on less than a thousand screens, 3 to 4 times less than most of the movies above it. It was 10th in weekend gross but 3rd in per screen, meaning it was very popular where it was shown. It did not open in my area although we have 27 screens in two cinemas. That happens a lot in smaller markets.

The movie was held back due to concerns regarding international affairs. I guess they were worried about people not wanting to go see a war movie.

I noticed it too when we had to drive 22 miles to go see the flick.

I thought it was because of the Miramax-Disney war--a lot of movies got held up because of it...

I discussed this with the entertainment editor of the area paper. He said what he is always told in these situations is that it was a marketing decision by Cinemark regional office in Dallas. I think this movie was delayed in release due to the Miramax nonsense, but I think the major reason it was not shown on many screens is that the idiots running the cinemas thought that it would not appeal to the movie-going crowd.

I am not positive and that may have a lot to do with it, but my dad mentioned this as a reason. He worked on the tranfer for the movie.

Roger Ebert, who is my personal favorite reviewer, gave it 3 stars, which is pretty good for him.
