What does the word "redneck" mean to you?

I've noticed that different people use it with different meanings. I'm curious what you hear when you hear the word "redneck."

Dirt. And really bad hair. And sleeves are optional, if not outright discouraged. The women smoke, and are weatherbeaten (usually by their 30s). The men chew. Sure, they have guns. They drink a lot. They either listen to awful music, or Lynyrd Skynyrd. They live in trailers, or traditional houses in various states of disrepair.

Most people equate it with the South, but I use Redneck as a term for anybody who's just an uneducated, backwoods, ignorant person without a shread of common sense ... or anybody who's been on COPS wearing a spaghetti-stained wife-beater and no pants.

While all of the options in the poll fit the bill, I think there is a less derogatory answer as well. The biggest redneck I know comes from the hills of Kentucky, talks with a drawl, loves Nascar, drinks Coors Light like a fish, likes to hunt, and calls himself a redneck. He's not a racist, he isn't exactly GQ material but he's well kept, he has a good job and is fairly intelligent.

I think redneck describes a lifestyle but that lifestyle doesn't have to include all the negatives. Though some of the funnier Foxworthy jokes should apply for the title to be official.

I don't think rednecks are limited to the south. There are plenty of rednecks in the midwest...in fact, most rural areas, regardless of what state, has its share of rednecks.

Because very few old-school black folks can be found here. To my many in my mother's generation, redneck=racist, and nothing else. She and her friends use "hillbilly" to describe the other aspects mentioned here.

Is your mom from West Virginia? Because those are the definitions I was raised with. I don't mind being called a hillbilly because of where I grew up...but 'redneck' always meant something a little more...severe. Maybe not necessarily racist, but definitely more associated with the Confederacy and the stereotypical southern image of the 1800's.

Depends on the usage, the user, and the target.

"The preacher man says it’s the end of time
And the Mississippi River she’s a goin’ dry
The interest is up and the Stock Markets down
And you only get mugged
If you go down town

I live back in the woods, you see
A woman and the kids, and the dogs and me
I got a shotgun rifle and a 4-wheel drive
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

I can plow a field all day long
I can catch catfish from dusk till dawn
We make our own whiskey and our own smoke too
Ain’t too many things these ole boys can’t do
We grow good ole tomatoes and homemade wine
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

Because you can’t starve us out
And you cant makes us run
Cause one-of- ‘em old boys raisin ole shotgun
And we say grace and we say Ma’am
And if you ain’t into that we don’t give a damn

We came from the West Virginia coalmines
And the Rocky Mountains and the and the western skies
And we can skin a buck; we can run a crop line
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

I had a good friend in New York City
He never called me by my name, just hillbilly
My grandpa taught me how to live off the land
And his taught him to be a businessman
He used to send me pictures of the Broadway nights
And I’d send him some homemade wine

But he was killed by a man with a switchblade knife
For 43 dollars my friend lost his life
Id love to spit some beechnut in that dudes eyes
And shoot him with my old 45
Cause a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

Cause you can’t starve us out and you can’t make us run
Cause one-of- ‘em old boys raisin ole shotgun
And we say grace and we say Ma’am
And if you ain’t into that we don’t give a damn

We’re from North California and south Alabam
And little towns all around this land
And we can skin a buck; we can run a crop line
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive"

Yup, that dar's a redneck.

Redneck is a racist term, in my opinion. It specifies a skin color and pegs it with a negative connotation. It's funny that the people that use the term as a weapon (toward bigoted white folks) are basically being hypocrites and bigots themselves.

In LA (lower alabama and nw florida) a redneck is someone who went to the beach and forgot to wear sunscreen. The poor and uneducated white folk are known as Bubbas.

Funny how slang changes after a negative stigma gets attached.

The "Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins" by Robert Hendrickson (Facts on File, New York, 1997) has this to say about the term: "REDNECK. A poor, white, often rowdy southerner, usually one from a rural area. The word, which is sometimes derogatory, has its origins in the sunburned necks of farmers and outdoor laborers, and originally meant a poor farmer. 'A redneck is by no means to be confused with 'po' whites,' wrote Jonathan Daniels in 'A Southerner Discusses the South' (1938): 'Poor white men in the South are by no means all po' white even in the hills. Lincoln and Jackson came from a southern folk the back of whose necks were ridged and red from labor in the sun.'"
