love/hate relationship with Fat Wallet

Yes, it's nothing new to a lot of you. Found out today about a one-day offer thru InStore and Circuit City where you get a gift card worth 20% of your total purchase of $200 or more. This offer finally made me bite the bullet and decide to buy the Nikon D70 digital SLR camera (normal price of $1300, currently priced at $1235 at CC, which is the best of any of the chain stores I'm familiar and comfortable with). Of course, as of this afternoon when I tried to buy it, it's out-of-stock online and in every CC within 100 miles of here.

I'm fairly new to the FW phenomenon, and so far, I'm 0-for-1.

Yeah it sucks. I didn't find out until late Sunday night that you could go to Circuit City and buy Xbox PLatinum Hits or whatever they are called, for $5 each. By the time I would have had time to get there, the deal was over.

I've gotten in on a few deals, like any Platinum hit for like $5 at best buy. And an EA Store ordering glitch (stacking coupons) meant I got a few games really cheap. I just bought NFL Street for $10 last week with a coupon EA sent me.

Overall its a good site, but the really good deals normally happen when I can't get to a store, so I miss those.

If the deals Fatwallet posted were limited to B&M, I wouldn't have much of a problem with them. It's not, though, and they pimp the hell out of online sales too. As a result, instead of being able to get a copy of that $4.99 Beyond Good & Evil on Xbox that bestbuy.com did a while back, you wind up with 10 people each buying 50 copies so they can resell them for a profit, and the folks who genuinely just want to try a game they might otherwise not have played (at a price they're okay with) get screwed over.

I mean, good for them, I guess, but a community is only as good as its members, and the members of the Fatwallet community are fairly scuzzy folk (at least the ones I've run across).

Yeah, it seems that way to me, in my limited time there. If they're not finding ways to abuse legitimate sales and reselling the products for a profit, it's Dellf codes and AMEX wishlist coupons that other people who would actually use are getting shut out of. Just like frickin' ticket scalpers and/or brokers.

The best thing to do is start off by clicking on the "Forums" tab, then choose "Hot Deals". There are some nice FAQs to help you get acquainted. Then start checking out the "Compare Prices", "Cash Back", and other tabs and links.

edit: Be sure to use the search tool in the forums. It's wonderful if you have a specific product or store in mind. The hot deals forum is so active that threads get buried really quickly if you just plan on going page-to-page.
