Yankees want Tampa to forfeit

Associated Press
NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees asked the commissioner's office to award them a forfeit over Tampa Bay after the Devil Rays failed to arrive in time for the scheduled start Monday because of travel problems in Florida due to Hurricane Frances.

The doubleheader was changed to a single game and the start time, pushed back Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., was reset for 7 p.m. The Devil Rays, who reported to Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg at 8 a.m., left the ballpark at 1:05 p.m., departed Tampa International Airport at 2:40 p.m. and arrived at LaGuardia Airport at 5:25 p.m.

"The rule states that if your team is here and ready to play, and the other team isn't here and not ready to play, there should be a forfeit, and we believe there should be a forfeit," Yankees president Randy Levine said.

"There are no plans to reschedule any games until this issue is worked out," he said.

Levine said the commissioner's office had been told by the Devil Rays that Tampa Bay would head to New York late Friday or Saturday. Levine called for an investigation by baseball, and said that if the facts as the Yankees understood them were true, the game should be forfeited. Alternatively, Levine said the game should be rescheduled for Oct. 4 -- the day after the regular season is scheduled to end -- if it's necessary to decide a postseason race.

A forfeit didn't appear to be likely.

"Given the stage of the season we are in, and the exciting pennant races, it is critical that we do everything to decide the championship on the field," commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement.

Tampa Bay's home games against Detroit on Saturday and Sunday were postponed, and the Tigers returned home after Friday night's games.

"There were plenty of opportunities to get out of Tampa on Saturday. The airports were open until 3 or 4 o'clock." Levine said.

Devil Rays spokesman Rick Vaughn said the Devil Rays had never intended to leave before Monday.

"The only thing that entered our mind was being with our families during the hurricane," he said.

The Yankee Stadium gates opened at 11 a.m., and about 1,000 fans were in the stands on the sunny afternoon when an announcement was made at 12:45 p.m. that the doubleheader would not start on time.

"We had planned on being here all day anyway," Yankees captain Derek Jeter said. "I don't see how we could play two games today now."

Ray Zincone, a 29-year-old from West Warwick, R.I., drove down to New York on Monday morning with his wife, Sheila, and 7-year-old son, Raymond.

"I would like to stay if there's a chance to play," he said.

The Yankees reported to Yankee Stadium at noon for the doubleheader.

"Let's get a grill," Yankees pitcher Mike Mussina said. "Hot dogs and burgers on the field."

Do we have to wonder what the Yank-mees would say if it was reversed and Tampa wanted them to forfeit a game? Or if it was Tampa at Boston, and the league would force Tampa to forfeit to Boston???

The Yankees won't get a forfeit, since Selig would have a hard time deciding whether the Yankees' starting pitcher could last 5 innings against nobody.

But just think how sweet it would be to add to the Red Sox nation's misery factor if they gave the Yanks the forfeit then the Yanks beat the Sox by one game.

I saw Cashman's interview as they waited on the game to start and it was pathetic. He ended it by stressing that the Yankees aren't looking for "free games", which means its definately what's on their mind. With their shitty play of late, and the Red Sox closing in, the Yankees are going to try to get a win any way they can.

It would be karma if the Devil Rays swept the Yanks now.

Damn, that is laughable. And absurd. If Bud gave them the forfeit, I think that would be the death of baseball. I know I'd never watch, nor buy their products, nor let my son watch ever again.

If there was no real good excuse... like they slept in or something, then I'd be fine with it. But don't the Yankees watch TV? Don't they see there's a freaking hurricane there?

Tell Cashman that the game has been switched to Tampa and that if the Yankees can't make it down there then they have to forefit the game. God I hope Boston kicks their asses in October.

I was wondering the same thing. If what Levine said is true ("The rule states that if your team is here and ready to play, and the other team isn't here and not ready to play, there should be a forfeit..."), and there are no other contravening rules regarding hurricanes/disasters, it sounds like the decision is made. Perhaps this is a situation where the commish would invoke "best interests of baseball."

The question is why isn't there an exception in the rulebook for circumstances beyond the team's control? Not just hurricanes, but earthquakes, fires, mechanical problems with the plane, etc.

I think the worst part isnt that the Yankees are considering the rules, its that they don't seem to give a damn about a situation where human lives are at stake. This is a situation where the Devil Rays have to look after their welfare and their families welfare. That he mentioned the rule doesn't seem to be as much of a problem than the fact that it seems thats all hes concerned about. If he gave a damn about anything but the Yankees and winning baseball games he might have said "We can understand how a disaster like this can change everyones plans. There are rules that state if a team doesn't show up there is a forfeit, so thats something we will all have to talk about with MLB."

Did he care enough to even say something like that? No. Apparently concern #1 for the Yankees is that THEY have been inconvienced.

The rule book is quite clear -- this should indeed have been a forfeit.

It's not really about what's in the rulebook. It sounds like the plan was for the games to be rescheduled until the Yankees formally requested the forfeit. The rule could have been overlooked, but the Yankees decided to be assholes and ask for a free win instead of settling it on the field.

In everyone's zeal to jump all over the Yankees, it seems like they overlooked this paragraph.

"Levine said the commissioner's office had been told by the Devil Rays that Tampa Bay would head to New York late Friday or Saturday. Levine called for an investigation by baseball, and said that if the facts as the Yankees understood them were true, the game should be forfeited. Alternatively, Levine said the game should be rescheduled for Oct. 4 -- the day after the regular season is scheduled to end -- if it's necessary to decide a postseason race."

Therefore the question is when were the Yankees informed that the Devil Rays would not be on time for the game? If the above statement is true, and the Yankees and their fans were expecting the D-Rays to be there on time for the game, then the D-Rays were negligent and should forfeit. On the other hand, if the D-Rays informed the Yankees that they would not make the scheduled start time in plenty of time so the Yankees could get the word out to their fans, then that's a different story.

It seems like this issue has more to do with miscommunication, than a hurricane.

JIMGA is just a horrible human being. i've never seen someone so contrary and eager to play devil's advocate than him.

all flights were cancelled on 9/11/01, would you want the Yankees to forfeit a game they had on the West Coast if they decided it wasn't safe to travel by plane? you probably would.

i wish you'd have been in Orlando when Frances hit. prick.

The point is the rule should have provisions for disasters, and not be left open for interpretation or emotional responses.

Here's another interesting scenario... What if five key players on a team all come down with the flu. Should the team play or should the game be rescheduled? What if 10 players on the team get the virus? What if 20 players get the virus, and they can't even field a team of 9 players, should it be a forfeit or rescheduled?

My point is no one wants to see people get sick, and everyone would feel bad for the people who are sick. But the rule needs to take the emotional response out of it, and establish the proper procedure to follow, so that arguments like this are avoided.

Fuck you Mr. 233 posts. And you can shove your out of left field assumptions squarely up your ass while you're at it.

See Jimbo J's post just before yours for my reasoning.

If the situation were reversed, there'd be an outcry about how the evil Yankees were being given special treatment by MLB. Instead, because it's the Yankees, people wanna bitch & moan.

I don't like the damn Yankees any better than most people, but I believe they ought to be allowed to play by the same rule book as everybody else.

Nice, glad to see you can always fall back on the "I have more posts than you so I know more" routine.

The same rule books gives the commisioner ultimate authority, and there's no way he's going to award a forfeit. There's no rule in rule book about cancelling games because of planes flying into skyscrapers, I guess they should have played games on 9/11 huh?

How pathetic does a team look when they have to beg for a forfeit against the D'Rays? HAHAHA.

Is this where you whip it out to prove how much of a man you are? Grow up. You who speak of mirrors calling someone a troll is humerous.

Maybe we should just kill the Devilrays, that would solve the problem right Jon?

The bottom line is, Selig will NOT issue a forfeit. He'll do the "we'll play it the day after the season ends if needed" routine and the game will never be played because the Red Sox will have clinched the division

The doubleheader had been scheduled long in advance. Tampa had said they would fly up Friday night or Saturday morning. They didn't.

They also didn't ask the Yankees or MLB to reschedule the game in advance either. The Yankees were within their rights to ask for a forfiet based on that. The right thing to do was to decline that request.

Did a "northerner" knock up your sister? I could go on and on about you but I think everyone already has their opinion of you locked up.

Someone close this thread as it's clearly way off-topic and Jon insists on fighting with anything that moves.

Since when does post count have anything to do with one's ability to have an opinion.

Now, of course, JHD was being an ass so by all means berate him for posting something stupid just don't bring his total number of posts into it as it's irrelevant and only discourages legitmate lurkers from posting.
