Sab Recreates Baseball History

For the second installment of my Sab Historic Recreations (SHR), I go to baseball. I will be using OOTP6 for this. Here is the set up.

This will be more like a "what if?" recreation rather than a straight historic recreation. Much like my boxing recreation, I am changing things a bit. With boxing, I'm forcing more defined champions, rankings, etc. The game only allows up to 15 rounds for a fight. Things like that. So it's a mixture of historic and modern rules.

The same will be done with the baseball recreation. What if baseball teams operated under modern financial and rule systems? Financials will be turned on and here are the settings.

Salary Cap: None
Team Chash Maximum: $50,000,000
National TV Contract Min.: $0
Only Use National TV: No, adjust for market. (We'll just pretend TV is radio for now. )
Minimum Salary: $300,000

I'm not an expert user of OOTP. For now, When I report things, I will report them at 1/1000th of their value. In other words, for the interest of this report, Team Max is $50,000 and the Min Salary is $300. So when I report a contract signing, I'll say something like 3 years at $900 a year. (In the game, it's $900,000, but in the interest of keeping things somewhat beleivable, I'll report it here at $900)

Computer Trades: Enabled / Normal
Trading Preference: Neutral

All of the advanced options are default. So the league in its entire history will have to deal with waivers, Rule 5 draft, the works.

League Totals are set to Deadball Era
Injuries: Enabled / Normal
Position Fatigue: Disabled (Maybe enable at a future date)

All players are set to 1-10 (I will just be spectating it)

Draft (yes, there will be a draft every year. Will not be auto-assigning players to team)

10 Rounds, Signing Bonus enabled.

Schedule

I imported the 1901 schedule posted on the OOTP boards (by Le Grande Orange). It starts off with a few series that go Home-Away-Home. Dunno why (probably some balancing issues) but whatever. I leave it as is.

There was no World Series played in 1901, so there won't be one in this one either.

I had to edit Farmer Burns and Pete Dowling as both were -1 years old. Neither played after the 1901 season, I made them old (36).

I'm leaving the minors empty. Since OOTP doesn't require them to be filled, I'll leave them empty so there is plenty of room to bring the young guys through. (Did they even have minor leagues back then?)

Anyway, I'll learn as I go. Let's get this thing started.

Just like with the boxing dynasty, I set up a website for it. Instead of making it all myself, I'm just using the HTML output from OOTP6.

Minor Leagues were around, they just weren't as we know them today. They were their own entities...organized, 'professional' baseball where the players were paid. According to Bill James:
Quote:
From The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract:
The minor leagues as they existed a hundred years ago were something more like today's Mexican League, or perhaps a Japanese baseball league, except that rather than operating in another country in a foreign language, they operated in the hinterlands of the United States. They were independent. My experience has been that it is difficult to get people to internalize this concept to the point that they can stop coloring their understanding of what happened then with modern notions about "minor league" baseball. My experience has been that if you tell somebody about the brilliant minor league career of Ox Eckhardt, who had a career average of .367, they will say, "Wow, why didn't he ever get a chance?" No, no--it's not like that. He's not a player who might have done things if he'd had the chance. He's a player who did things. He played baseball. He made a good living playing baseball. His picture was on baseball cards; he was a local celebrity. The fact that he did these things in a league that was not the American or the National is important in its own way, but it doesn't make the things he did unreal or meaningless, as it would today; he did them. If he hit .370 one year, the reason he wanted to hit .380 the next was not so he would get "called up," but so he would get a better contract, just as if he were a major leaguer, or so his team might win the pennant, just as if that were a major league pennant.
Just thought I'd share

There aren't enough pitchers.

At least, it appears that there aren't enough pitchers. One team has 4 pitchers, one of them is 4-0 with 1 save. After looking at baseball-reference.com, several teams operated with 4-5 pitchers, some with 7+.

First change: 4-man Rotation. Don't know where I saw it, but I thought the dead ball era had 3-man rotations. But it's kind of wrecking havok on the stats already. Or appears it will. So I'm changing to a 4-man rotation.

News Stories
Roscoe Miller (DET) will miss 4 weeks
DETROIT - Detroit's pitcher Roscoe Miller was part of a scary incident that saw the right-hander being hit by a line drive in the 5th inning of the game between Detroit and Chicago (A). Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. Miller will miss about 4 weeks. Detroit wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Miller had suffered a Broken Finger.

Charlie Case shuts out Chicago (N) on 2 hits
CHICAGO (N) - Charlie Case made some history on Monday by pitching a shutout in his first big-league start. Cincinnati's right-hander baffled Chicago (N) all day, allowing only 2 hits. What a way to begin a career! 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Case (2-0) struck out 3 and walked 1, throwing 57 of 90 pitches for strikes. Cincinnati's catcher Heinie Peitz went 2 for 4. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Case. The final score of the game was 1-0.

Injury Reports
CHN: Frank Chance was injured being hit by a pitch.
Diagnosis: Broken Wrist. He is definitely out for the season!

DET: Roscoe Miller was injured when he was hit by a line drive.
Diagnosis: Broken Finger. He will be OK in about 4 weeks.

Transaction News
Cincinnati: Placed P Charlie Case on waivers for the purpose of removing him off the 40-man roster.

(What the hell...he pitches a 2-hit shutout and then gets placed on waivers? Well, CIN is one of the teams with more than enough pitchers, so that might be messing up the logic a bit.)

Heh. Funny anachronism in that the X-Ray was used to determine the bicep problem, but in the real 1901, the very invention of the X-Ray was fetted at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo. It was this same exposition where President McKinley was shot and died several days later. Because of the newness of X-Ray technology, no one thought to move the President a few booths down and have him examined by X-Ray. Some doctors thought that doing so might have given them a chance to save his life.

Just a little tidbit o' history. Carry on.

That's pretty funny (about having these injuries in my recreation that use an x-ray to diagnose, not the McKinley thing. ).
