Coliseum thoughts?
Did anyone buy and play Coliseum? What are your thoughts?

I bought it and played it some. I loved the "idea" of the game, but the designer's vision varied too greatly from what I really wanted in a gladiator game. I guess I was wanting something with the depth of a text sim, but the game is much more of a simple "play it while something is downloading" type of game. I think it accomplishes that very well, but that's not what I like. The game is just way too simplistic and lacks interesting details for my style of play. If you are looking for something with a lot of depth or strategy like you find in most text sims I think you'll be disappointed in it. On the other hand, if you are looking for a "light" game to play casually it might be perfect.

Ditto what Bee said, word for word. That's exactly how I felt.

I was pretty disappointed with it since I was hoping it would be a real gladiatorial game like the PBM games I have played in the past. Instead it was extremely light with little real depth or content, I felt like I had pretty much exhausted my options after playing the demo for 20 minutes.

Testing the demo now... getting pretty much the same vibe as above. Interesting concept, but ten minutes into the demo, I feel like I already see how the game works comletely. Not so good, that.
But a lot of potential with the developer - it's pretty slick, and they seem interested in the text sim genre, at least. Good signs there. |

The developer seems to like to do the short and simple style of games that are great to sit down for 10 minutes and play but don't hold my interest for long. Nothing wrong with that style of game, but those kind of games just don't do it for me. I'm hoping he'll try a sequel that might add some serious depth to the game, but I have my doubts after trying his other games.
*Again not saying his games are bad, they actually seem pretty good for that style, just not my cup o tea. |

For those interested in taking a shot at this one, it's down to $9.95 at the Shrapnel Games site. If you enter in the coupon code BACKTOSCHOOL, you get an extra 15% off (any of their games, for that matter). Create an account when you buy the game and you get another 50 cents off. Priority mail shipping is also free now.
I just ordered the game for $7.96, shipped. |
