15 most tortured sports cities

ESPN Cold Pizza is doing a story on the 15 most tortured sports cities. Here is 15 through 5 (The rest are coming in a few weeks):

15. Tampa Bay
14. Kansas City
13. Cincinnati
12. Phoenix
11. Washington, D.C.
10. Houston
9. San Diego
8. Atlanta
7. Seattle
6. Minneapolis
5. Boston

Here is the sports guy's story on it:
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2...simmons/040525

If Chicago is #1, I'm killing someone. They had 6 years of Greatness in basketball.

Yeah but and then what? Everyone knows the story about the Cubs. The White Sox have gone longer than the Red Sox since their last World Series championship. The Bears were good 20 years ago, I doubt anyone living in the Chicago area could even name 2 Blackhawk players (I certainly couldn't.)

Its all our own fault though, I don't think there's another city out there with as much bad ownership as we have.

I'm a little surprised to see DC on the list... I mean, yeah, the Caps and Bullets suck, but we've got a TON of great regional college programs that are great (Maryland, VT, etc.) and the 'Skins were a dynasty in the 80's...

Milwaukee should make the top 5. Brewers have been bad for nearly two decades. The Packers stopped playing here a decade ago or more, and the Bucks haven't been to the NBA finals in 30 years.

We can't get a NHL franchise and we lost our Arena Football League team.

Our one claim to sports fame recently is the Milwaukee Wave. They have been to the championship game four years in a row and won the first two. Of course, it is indoor soccer so who really cares.

Personally, as a Braves fan, I wouldn't trade the 12 division titles for 2 or 3 more World Series wins. The team did something that maybe only the Yankees will do for the next 100 years. Would I have liked to see more championships, sure, but I don't think I've been tortured... except that Bobby Cox keeps hanging around, but what can you do... people haven't come to games for years and he keeps going to games.

Of course, I don't care about the rest of the sports teams in Atlanta, so.

Danny White never got his due. He was a damn good quarterback that had to follow a legend.

Hmmm... I wonder what we mean by "tortured." If it's just a matter of having bad sports teams, that's one standard. But if real torture is having pretty good teams that offer you a glimmer of hope but cannot come through, that's another matter, I think.

Sort of like comparing the droughts of the Red Sox and the Cubs. Both have gone a long, long time without winning it all -- but I htink the Red Sox fans have endured more torture by having quite a number of good teams along the way, and managing to find spectacular ways to lose each and every time, it seems. The Cubs have only shown glimmers of real hope a few times during their century or so of futility.

I think that article is the single best article Simmons' has ever written. It is so astoundingly great to read actual positive words about Boston sports when he could have taken the time to whine about the red sox for 2000 words instead. I also generally agree with his revised list, and also agree chicago belongs nowhere near the list. Simmons mentioned how in the last 30 years he has witnessed 7 professional championships. Chicago fans have the same. Simmons mentions all the great athletes that have graced Boston fans(even including Clemens in the list), Chicago fans got Jordan, Payton, and one of the most fun and best football teams in history. While losers, everyone loves the Cubs, and it hurts like hell to be a Cubs fan sometimes, but its certainly not torturous.

And finally, nothing has made me grin more, ever, in any article I've ever read, anywhere, than this(from Simmons article today):

"8. Atlanta
Again, you have to care. They can't even sell out playoff games in Atlanta. And while we're on the subject, is there a more delightful subplot in sports right now than the potential demise of the Braves? Right now I'm doing the Tomahawk Chop with my middle finger extended toward the laptop screen. Ohhhhhhhhhhh ... oh ... oh-uh-oh ... Ohhhhhhhhhhh ... oh ... oh-uh-oh ..."

God that's beautiful.

dola,

I've never been more proud to be a fan of one of my teams, and simultaneously more disdainful of Atlanta sports(which I have despised since my arrival in the city) than during the singing of the 7th inning stretch in game 5 of the LDS last year at Turner Field. When all you could hear in the stadium was "and it's root-root-root for the CUBBIES, if they don't win its a shame" it was a spine-tingling atmosphere for the Cubs fans there.

It has to be Philly as number 1.

Its been 30 years since our last Cup.
24 years since our last world series.
Never won a superbowl.
21 years since our last NBA Championship

Lots of DC folks I know are VT fans... and even if that's a stretch, I still say having Maryland nearby is big enough (football team is now a perennial bowl contender... NCAA hoops champs a few years ago, etc.) There's also UVA and Georgetown.

My point was just that I didn't really think DC was all that tortured... but I guess they should get points for getting f*cked in the ass by Bud Selig every year while MLB puts the Expos in Puerto Rico while ownership groups in DC and N. Va are bending over to get the team there...

Wasn't Danny White the coach of one of the Arena League teams? I thought that's what he was doing a couple of years ago.

He also destroyed parts of my childhood. I was brought up as a Roger Staubach fan, starting in-utero. Losing all those NFC championship games in a row gave me ulcers at a young age... Then Gary Hogeboom came along and... well, those days are best not mentioned.

Danny White was the coach of the Arizona Rattlers. Not sure if he's still doing it or not. They did win an Arena Bowl while he was there..

I guess that's my point - when I think (or hear) of DC college sports (and I live in the general area), it's Georgetown, Maryland, UVA, Navy. VT doesn't really seem to be followed in the media, unless I just haven't paid much attention to it.

I dunno... I read the Washington Post sports page online every day, and they always cover the Hokies...

I would imagine TV coverage is a little different, yeah, because folks down that way would have their own stations. But other than the Richmond Times-Dispatch, there really isn't another major newspaper in VA, so the Post is it.

heh well if the 49ers ran that pick play 10 more times, 6 times it would be flagged and the other 4 Dwight Clark would never have caught it.

Then he got knocked out with a concussion against Washington in the 4th quarter and the aforementioned Hogeboom threw a pick to give away the game.

He took the rap for all 3 of those games, but he didn't deserve it. At the time I don't think Cowboy fans really appreciated what he did considering the core of that team was getting very old.

Considering I am from San Diego, it should have made the top 3. Cmon, I have yet to celebrate a Super Bowl or World Series championship. I mean, we had Dan freakin Fouts and we didn't touch the Super Bowl. We had Tony freakin Gwynn and we lost 2 World Series. Junior Seau is gone. Rodney Harrison is gone. The Padres cleaned house after the Padres last World Series. We don't have a professional basketball team. We don't have a professional hockey team (Although the Gulls are pretty good). We used to have a good indoor soccer team, but hey, it's soccer. We don't even have a WNBA team.

If this is talking about titles only, then I think Bay Area deserves some mention. Other than the 49ers of the 80's there has been little (A's - 1 title) if nothing won here in the Bay Area. Warriors - horrible. Giants -haven't won a series in SF. Sharks - 0 for 13 now. A's - let all their players go to other teams. 49ers - have John York as their GM.

Bah. They've enjoyed plenty of success with the 'Niners and Raiders over the years. And the A's are a solid franchise. They've got a pretty new ballpark for the Giants and the greatest home run hitter since Babe Ruth. Solid college programs, too, with Cal and Stanford nearby.

the rams have only been competitive for 3 out of the last 5 years. Blues are bigger chokers than the Braves, and the Cards haven't done anything for years.

I agree with druez, it has to be Philly. Not only has a Philly team not won a championship in the big 4 in over 20 years, they have had some seriously good teams in all 4 sports at one point or another, and have lost. Every year there is hope for at least 1 Philly team to go all the way (and it's usually 2 or 3), and each year they fail. And they've been failying for over 2 decades (Baseball and Basketball), 3 decades in hockey and over 4 decades in football.

I will give you a tourtured sports CIty (or MSA) - Hampton Roads. We are tortured because we are the largest metro area without a Major League Franchise of any sort. always on the outside looking in.

It has to be Buffalo.
