Age of Sail Games
So anyone have any recommendations? I've recently become very interested in the period due to reading Patrick O'Brian's books and am looking for a good game to go along with it.
I've been playing Port Royale but I'm looking for something a little less focused on the trading aspect and more on the Napeolonic Wars and such. Something that puts me in more control of the ships themselves as well. I've recently put in orders to grab Age of Sail 2: Privateer's Bounty and Man of War II which both look to be pretty decent little games, although a few years old. Anything else? I can't believe there's not more to this genre though, surprises me. Guess I'll probably just have to keep waiting for the new Pirates. Also, is there any strategic type age of sail games? Like along the lines of a Tiller-ish type game during the period? I wasn't having any luck scrounging one up. |

There's a new game in the works called Salvo! to be published (developed?) by Shrapnel. The web site is http://www.spruegames.com/. I am not overly impressed myself, but at least it's new.
Haven't seen anything strategic-level, although that would be very cool. Meanwhile, Port Royale continues to hold me like a slave... ![]()

Just got Age of Sail 2: Privateer's Bounty in the mail today!
Now if only this day would end so I could go play it. Hadn't heard of that Salvo game, I'll keep an eye on it although I'll agree with you, it's not really grabbing me. The only problem I'm going to have is pulling myself away from the O'Brian books long enough to play the games. I'm loving this books so far, can't believe I'm so late to the party. About a third of the way through Post Captain and can't stop. I picked up that Sea of Words companion book which has been very helpful in speeding along my learning of the terms. |

Yup, I locked into O'Brian's books, too. The Hornblower stuff I'd read many years back - I may need to tackle that again soon.
I have to say, Calis, that Port Royale is a fantastic age of sail game. It ranks in very rarified company (with CivII, Imperialism II, HOMM3) of time-gobbling games I've played. The battles are actually quite impressive (wind gauge, type of shot, etc.), and extensive strategy of where your ships/convoys go and with what purpose. One of my few niggles with the battles are that boarding always results in the elimination of one ship's crew, which is not realistic at all. I also don't like the way AI ships "lock on" to your every move, tracking you like radar. Great game overall, though. What do you think of Privateer's Bounty? I've been waiting for a bargain bin price on it, since the original was so awful.

Yeah Port Royale really is a fun game, unfortunately I've been itching for a different type of experience, so it hasn't got the play time it's deserved unfortunately. I never really tried the battles manually to be honest as I never used ships with any cannons or armed men. They were to trade and run like hell when attacked. I'll have to try out the actual battles sometime.
I'm enjoying Privateer's Bounty quite a bit so far. I found a great little community for AoS2 + PB at hxxp://www.sealordsvf.org/ Small group, but seem like real good people. They seem to mostly stick to AoS2 which they say is better for multi. I haven't played it a whole lot unfortunately. This weekend was rather hectic, but I did put in a few battles and had quite a bit of fun. I wouldn't say it's a great game, but it's worth the 10 bucks I paid for it. I'm hoping it'll be even more fun playing some multi games. As for the O'Brian books I realized this weekend as I was reading further along in Post Captain that it seemed oddly familiar. Then I realized it reminded me almost exactly of Jane Austen, and I wept. I wept because I liked it. |

Almost forgot, I saw this Saturday..
http://pc.ign.com/articles/506/506880p1.html No word on if it's coming over here, but might be worth following. Slightly dissapointed it's a MMOG though, I've grown pretty tired of those. I had a blast with the old Uncharted Waters game. Some more on Privateer's Bounty as well, from what I hear it's basically AoS2 patched up, and with some new scenarios added in, and a couple new rigs like balloons and subs. More of a patch than a real new game. Supposedly the AI is much improved also. It also(I think) added in allocating crew to repairing sails or moving more to boarding. Stuff like that. At least I don't think the original had this. It's still very much a niche game though, I can see how most folks would be bored senseless playing it. ![]() |

Check out the detail of the Port Royale battles. I especially like the chain shot effects on the sails. You can zoom in/out with the mouse wheel, by the way.
