In need of a penalty expert

Could someone verify whether this penalty played out right in FOF2K4?

<<<
3-02-FAR06 (06:34) DEN 39 Portis ran inside the right guard for 3 yards.
Tackled by FAR 43 Parrish, assisted by FAR 33 Marion.
Key block delivered by DEN 72 Farrell.
Penalty: DEN - Tripping.

1-03-FAR13 (06:24) DEN 39 Portis ran outside the right tackle for -1 yards.
Tackled by FAR 57 Seau, assisted by FAR 77 Ahanotu.
<<

Thanks,
Jeff

Looks like a ten yard penalty after the play. I don't know, is tripping a post-play play?

Exactly. It's my guess that it would not be a post-play penalty as it could have played a large role in Portis gaining the three yards.

AFAIK, the penalty is applied correctly, the down is correct, the distance is not -- it should be 1st and goal (or 1st and 13).

If it were post-play it would be a personal foul - not tripping.

Is it a downfield penalty? It's possible it occured precisely where Portis was stopped. Maybe it was then a 10 yard penalty, but only from the spot of the foul?

I know when there is holding downfield, the play stands, but there is a penalty from where the foul occured.

I'm thinking it should be 3rd and 9 from the 13.

Had to go to the NFL Rulebook for guidance....it's not a fun read.

Rule 14 Section 1 Article 4 - When the spot of enforcement (of a penalty) is not governed by a genral or specific rule, it is the spot of the foul.

Rule 14 Section 1 Article 5 (b) The basic spots of enforcement are the dead ball spot on a running play.

Rule 14 Section 1 Article 5 Note: If the offense fouls behind the basic spot, enforcement is from the spot of the foul.

Also

Rule 14 Section 8 Article 4 - After a distance penalty for a foul by the offensive team during a play from scrimmage which results in the ball being in advance of the necessary line, it is a first and 10 for teh offensive team

SO....

3rd and 2, Denver gets 3 yards to the FAR 6 yard line...1st down and Goal. Tripping, at the dead ball spot, loss of 10 yards. It should be 1st down and Goal at the FAR 13 yard line.

No, the game got (part of it) wrong. The game says 1st and 3 after the penalty, it should be 1st and 13. Well, I would say Jim got it right, but his code did not. (ie, bug)

I was trying to look it up. All I saw wrong was the 1st and goal issue as well.

Thanks for all your replies. And kudos to you Dutch, I was way too scared to dig inside the official rulebook.
