FBCB: The Journey of a Coach
FBCB: The Journey of a Coach
Are you ready for another attempt a dynasty by GE? In my latest attempt, I will be using Fast Break College Basketball, a very addictive college basketball simulator created by HeavyReign. The dynasty will follow the journey of young Tim Brice (that’s me) as I attempt to work my way up the ladder of the college basketball universe. I am a 22 year old coach and a graduate of the University of Memphis. I am fresh off the staff off coach John Calipari, where I was a student assistant. (Hey, a little role playing can be fun.) I either have two options if I want to move up the college basketball world. One, and the more difficult of the two, is to take the first program I inherit and take them to the top. Since it will be a very low prestige team, this could prove to be difficult and take a lot of time. The second option is to perform well enough at that school to where I first coach and get job offers from higher prestige teams. This is more of a quick fix. Which route will I take? Only time will tell. The program I am taking over is Garner Webb. They are a prestige 1 team and are currently in no conference, but have the lose Independent affiliation. The Independents do not hold a conference tournament but they do give out awards. Since I am playing with conference promotions, the first goal of the program is to work its way into a conference. In an interesting side note, I was recruited to play soccer at Gardner Webb. I would have probably gone there but by the time they started the recruiting process, I had signed elsewhere. I very well could have been going there… I will start out as a Level 0 coach (of course). I assign the point totals as the following… Recruiting: 50 Scouting: 15 Coaching Offense: 15 Coaching Defense: 20 Off we go….. |

Staff Hiring 2003
As is custom in FBCB, the first thing you do is hire staff. My athletic director tells me just to improve the team’s prestige. That’s it? Just improve the prestige? I am glad Gardner Webb cares about its basketball. How about a little pressure here? The team prestige is a frickin’ 1! A blind monkey could improve on that. Code:
The computer recommends that we spend about $91,500 on our staff. That will be about what we spend, plus or minus a few thousand. Here is the staff: Recruiting Coordinator: Garret Austin Age: 25 Salary: $30,000 Recruiting: 35 Scouting: 31 Lead Scout: Antoine Ludwig Age: 36 Salary: $30,000 Scouting: 35 Coaching Assistant: Daniel Fox Age: 43 Salary: $30,000 Recruiting: 34 Scouting: 7 Offense: 25 Defense 38 The early emphasis will be placed on defense for our young team, as that is what I have the higher of the coaching skills and that was my assistant has. Our recruiting philosophy will focus on players who can shoot and defend and grab a rebound when needed. We will recruit depth so that we can run a high pace game.

Season Scheduling 2003
We set out on our schedule making looking for teams we can at least compete with and try to win some games this year. Surprisingly, we are not invited to any tournaments . We have 28 openings in our non-conference schedule (no pun intended) and up to 10 of those can be played at home. Great.Code:
I think I could win every game this season and still have a RPI of 327.

Preseason Recruiting 2003
My specialty is recruiting and hopefully I can talk some kids into coming here and playing for the Bulldogs. I mean, who would not want to come and play for Gardner Webb? You get immediate playing time, you get to play cupcakes in your schedule, and you get free food at the concession stand (when it is open). We have four scholarships available this year and we plan to fill all of them with depth and players who can come in and start immediately. The positions we need to address are: Power Forward, Small Forward, Shooting Guard, Point Guard. Our team slogan this year is “Let’s be the best cupcake in the oven.” However, I did not tell the recruits that. We have a monthly recruiting budget of $6,250 this year. The first player we elect to go after is *** PG Charles Brazell from Danbury, NC. Charles is not my ideal point guard, but he has some inside game and a decent jump shot with some potential in both of those areas. He is not a good handler, but he can pass. He is not a great defender, but he will do. Overall, he is not my perfect point guard but is close to home and easy to recruit. The next target we identify is *** PF Samual Anderson from Converse, Texas. What a cool name. Samaul is the type of player who is going to score some points on the inside, but may not offer much more. He is not a good rebounded and has to work hard on his post defense. But hey, that’s what I am here for. Our next goal is to find a SG and a SF, as well as a PG because it does not look like Brazell will be a Bulldog. My shooting guard target is Richard Boughton, a *** player from Lawrenceville, NJ. He is 6`6 meaning he can probably play SF as well. He can knock down a jump shot and is quick and beat you off the dribble. He has some upside as a defender. He is also a good passer which is a plus. After frustration of looking through the small forwards and finding no one I like, I pull kind of an unexpected move. I decide to actively pursue another shooting guard. If we get Boughton to commit, I can always move him to a pretty effective small forward. The SG I am pursuing is 6`4 Andrew Reyes, a *** player from Honaker, VA. He has good inside game and some potential as a defender. He also likes Gardner Webb. What a surprise. We will continue to evalute the SF position. The good news is Samual Anderson committed before the training camps began. It is a big pick up, in my opinion. The bad news is Reyes decides to go elsewhere. Hopefully we can find a SF to fit our needs. Here is the player card for Anderson: Code:

I take the computer’s recommendations for training, with a couple of exceptions, and off we go (hey, this is not my team yet). Our roster actually has a couple players who are fairly talented. One of them is SG Jose Thompson, a freshman from Fuquay-Varina (amazingly, my spell checker did not complain about that city), North Carolina. However, he does not look ready for the show so I will red shirt him. The other is Taylor Pritchard, a Senior from East Flat Rock, NC. Not Flat rock, but East Flat Rock (he was listed as being from Flat Rock in the media guide and this did not sit too well with him). Code:
Code:
We get off to a 3-0 start with an impressive win over Lipscomb. Pritchard hits for 19 points and powers his way to seven boards. Oshaughnessy also stroked the net for 14 points. We then have a fun game drilling Virginia Military Institute by 40 points. It was a balanced effort as Pritchard had 17 points, Thrash had 14, and Oshaughnessy had 19. Also Senior Rudy Diagle scored 10 points. I can just hear our 14 fans chanting at the game: “RUDY!! RUDY!! RUDY!!” We identify a small forward target from Vandergrift, PA who has no scholarship offers in *** Jason Edmiston. Unfortunately, at the end of the month we learn he signs with Connecticut. Talk about your change of fortunes. Also Brazell decides to go to Florida State. That is fine, if you do not want to be the best cupcake in the oven take your game elsewhere.

Nice start! I'll be reading. I've been playing a similar type game (level 0 start, promtions on, start with a crappy team), and it has been a lot of fun.
I'm curious, what's the rating of your facilities? That's been the hardest thing for me to get our school to improve in my game. They always bitch about not having money, and the facilities have been rated 0-8 the entire time. I think if I were starting over, I'd pick someplace that had a little better situation. |

GB - Our training facillites are rated at a measly 1, which is good enough for 5th in the Indepedent league. I understand that, like you, we do not have our on basketballs. Luckily, the local high school lets us borrow some, but not without a price. The principal is an older female says we have to pay her in a non-money way, if you know what I mean. Again, luckily one of players (I will not say who) is up to the task.
This is not my first time to take on a very low prestige team. I took another team to a level 3 prestige conference and our training facillities were rated at like a 25 in 2020 in that conference. So while things improve, they do not get much better. MrBug - I am glad you are enjoying our team startegy. ![]() |

December 2003
Dutch - I am glad to see you are reading and hope you will continue to do so. We head into December with a 4-0 start. This has sparked interest all over campus fro the basketball. Our university president, who was unaware we had a basketball team before the season began, is now attending every home game and wearing her Red and Black. She even told me she may get a basketball for the program, if she can pry it away from her grandchild. I am not getting my hopes up. Recruiting wise, things have not gone well for us. It looks like Boughton will be heading elsewhere, although it is not official. We may can make a move but I plan on using resources elsewhere. We go back to the evaluation board looking for a point guard and a small forward. We do identify a new SG target from Berwick, LA in *** Charles Elmore, Charles can hit a jump shot and has some potential there. He needs to work on his defense and stamina but overall I am impressed. I hope it is not too late to get him to take a look at us. Code:
We start with a road loss by 2 points to Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne. So I have always wondered is there and Indiana campus and then a Purdue campus? Who knows. Oshaughnessy hit for 17 points in the only bright spot in this loss. Pritchard got in foul trouble and only played 7 minutes. However, we respond in a big way by pounded Prairie View A&M by 29 points. Pritchard hit for 18 and Oshaughnessy had 12. After the game, I suggested to the Prairie View coach that he rename his gym “Little House on the Prairie.” He was not amused. Next up we hit the West Coast and roar past UC-Riverside by 28 points. Thrash was the man hit for 18 points and grabbing 8 boards. On the way back home, our bus broke down in Las Vegas. I called the athletic director and he told me that we did not have the money to fix the bus. Luckily, Taylor Pritchard is a pretty darn good poker player. He won us the money to fix the bus and return home. What a great kid! Next up Binghamton came to town and we were 6-1 so we had some fans show up. How many you may ask? Seventy-two. That’s a new record crowd. The school even allowed for us to have some cheerleaders at the game. We beat them by six as Oshaughnessy hit for 15 points. Next up we went in and played at Morris Brown. Reserve guard Jack Chandler apparently got his wires crossed as he thought Morris Brown was just one person. Imagine his surprise when he saw they fielded a full team like we did! Senior PG Wood scored 22 points in the win. What happened next was a bit funny. I figured, hey we are 8-1, we have everyone talking about the basketball team, why not ask for a raise? I went to the athletic director and he said sure. When I went to practice the following day, the baskets were raised from 10 feet to 14 feet. I don’t know if this is some kind of joke or if the athletic director was to out of it to consider that I wanted a monetary raise. I think it is probably the latter. Charleston Southern proved to tough for us in our next game in the battle between the Carolinas. Starting center Kim Lambert got himself in foul trouble and we really don’t have much depth there. Oshaughnessy did score 17 points. Next up we beat Army by 14. Our defense was swarming, giving up just 37 points. Oshaughnessy again had 17. You know what they say, defense wins championships. In our case, defense wins basketballs and the right to some icing on our cupcake. We go on the road and beat a good Birmingham Southern team by 13 to improve to 10-2. Pritchard and Oshaughnessy again spearheaded the offense and leading the attack. I wish things were going as well on the recruiting front. Boughton and Elmore both elected to turn down our scholarships offers, electing instead to go to Connecticut and Cincinnati. Very few three star players are left and we may have to turn to trying to find some rough in the diamonds players.

January 2004
We head into January where the weather is cold but the team is hot with a scorching 10-2 record. I hope our success on the court will continue. Unfortunately, the recruiting has not been as lucky. We have failed to get the quality players the program needs. However, I am still confident we can land players to add depth to our program, which it desperately needs. I find PG Vaughan Roy, from Reedsville, OH. Vaughan is a good handler and shooter and rated as a *** PG. However, his interest is very low in us so we will have our work cut out if we want to get him. We also spend the rest of the money evaluating a couple of players who can score points and a shooting guard from the UK. Code:
The next game disaster strikes as Albany beats us on our home floor by 13 points. Albany Is not a good basketball team and they beat us at home by that many points. Things are starting to look bleak. We managed to beat Mt. Saint Mary’s to hopefully get us going in the right direction again. Pritchard had 19 points and 11 rebounds. We go and beat Florida A&M on the road in a good win. It was a lowing scoring affair, but like I said the emphasis this season is on defense. Pritchard and Oshaughnessy combined for 28 points, over half our offense. We go on the road and lost to Delaware State. I knew going into this games things might be tough. Oshaughnessy hit for 32 points but they had a balanced offensive attack from their starters, placing four of them in double figures. We beat a terrible William and Marry team on the road by four. That team was 2-15 coming into the game. But you know what they say, a win is a win come March. Reserve guard Chandler led all scorers with 16 points. Next up was Eastern Kentucky and I knew they had a pretty good team because they were 10-9. None-of-the-less, we have to play the game on the road. We got beat and got beat pretty bad. Amazingly, Vaughan Roy commits to our school with very little effort in trying to get him to sign. I think this is a huge commitment for our program. Here is a look at his player card: Code:
Again, I am concenred about his academics, but he is a good player. The kid we evaluated from the UK was a pretty good player. However, he decided to sign with Indiana State. We don’t have the resources to recruit a foreign player anyway. I will sign one more player in all likely hood, and then just keep the scholarship around for next year. By the way here are the Independent standings: Code:
If the promotion/demotion is based purley on record, then we will have the inside track to get promoted. It looks there will only be two teams that have a shot to finish above .500

February 2004
With the good news of PG Vaughan Roy committing to Gardner Webb, we now can turn our focus to one more player. He will be either a small forward or a shooting guard and hopefully will be a diamond in the rough. We spend our monthly rerouting budget evaluating these players, as there are plenty of them in FBCB. The 13-7 record heading into February is better than expected, but we have our work cut out for us if we want to get promoted to a conference. Right now, our RPI sits at 308. Texas Pan-America, our main competition for the promotion, has a RPI of 143. Obviously we have our work cut out for us if the promotion/demotion is based solely on RPI. Interestingly enough, Centenary, who boasts a 1-20 record, has a RPI of 287. Go figure. Code:
Next up we host Stephen F. Austin and what is sure to be a good game. E get a good 13 point victory. It was a balanced scoring effort with Oshaughnessy scoring 14 points to lead the way. Next up we travel and play 5-19 Loyola-Maryland. We get the victory. Oshaughnessy had 20 and Wood added 13 of his own for the W-I-N. We next play the religious contingent on our schedule. We travel and play Sacred Heart in Fairfield, CT. The game is won and highlighted by Thrash hitting for 24 points with Pritchard chipping in 18. Next up we play St. Peter’s. One of my players got really confused and said he is not ready to meet St. Peter. When I explained that it was a college basketball he got even more worried and asked how we could beat God? Some of the players on this team. Unfortunately, St. Peters, a 6-22 team, showed us up beating us by 16. Our recruiting focuses on SG Gregory Carter from Richard, VA and SF Fletcher Musser, a junior college transfer from Wisconsin. Both are pretty good players and fit my diamond in the rough plan. We will see how that goes. Stay tuned as we head into March looking for a 20 win season and a conference promotion.

Heading into March, we know that it is most likely we will not go to a postseason tournament. But we have a dream of winning 20 games and getting a conference promotion. Recruiting, after a slow start, is going well and I think we will really feel some needs this year. Everything is good here at Gardner Webb. If we can only improve the facilities, get more of a recruiting budget, etc. Code:

The 2003-2004 season can be considered a very successful start to a long journey for me as a coach. The 20 wins I think is a great accomplishment for our team. Let’s look at the seniors graduating:

Team Prestige: 4 (+3) New Athletic Board Goal: Avoid Last Place in the Conference We head into 2004 looking forward to the new year of college basketball season. We will certainly have our work cut out for us this year. We promoted to a level 2 conference in the Atlantic Sun, after last season’s outstanding 20-8 run. We return the leading scorer form last year in John Oshaughnessy and will have added depth in Jose Thompson and the freshman that we brought in. I do not get a points increase or any job offers. We also do not hear back from our last recruit in SF Fletcher Musser. That is not a serious loss but he would have added depth. We do get the scholarship for this year and hopefully we can spend it well. We receive our new budget and despite us going to a Level 2 conference, it only rose a total of $50,000. This means we will have a measly $250 extra to spend each month on recruiting. I am not to happy about that. The board needs to let go of some money. Also in a bit of bad news, our scouting director - Antoine Ludwig - left to take the same position with Chattanooga. We replace him with Andrew Oglesby. 2004/2005 Staff: Recruiting Coordinator: Garret Austin (2nd year) Age: 26 Salary: $30,000 Recruiting: 35 Lead Scout: Andrew Oglesby (1st year) Age: 43 Salary: $30,000 Scouting: 28 Coaching Assistant: Daniel Fox (2nd year) Age: 44 Salary: $30,000 Coaching Offense: 21 Coaching Defense: 38

Our schedule this year is loaded. We scheduled so many away and away series last year that the favor must be returned. I honestly did not expect us to promote or I probably would not have done it. It just means we will play more games and we do have a lot of home games so hopefully we will be able to put together a nice record heading into conference play. Code:

Preseason Recruiting Heading into the recruiting season we have four scholarships to deal out. What I would like to have is a SF, SG, and at least one point guard. If I can get a good big man, I will settle there too. I have a new strategy when it comes to recruiting this year. Since we have a limited budget, I will start local, then span out. I hope that our local kids will be able to provide us with the talent we need. To start - I get some type of good news. I must have miscalculated my budget some how. The new budget calls for $11,475 a month. This is big for such a small program like us. We can now spend more money and not be as localized in our efforts. Our first target is at the shooting guard where we are recruiting *** Reuben Quinn from Elizabethton, TN. Reuben is a true point guard, but if we can get him we will in all likelihood move him to shooting guard. He was named Mr. Basketball in Tennessee, which is an impressive honor. He shot lights out from the jumps hot range. He lists Gardner Webb as his #2 school. The second target is point guard Brett Clemmer from Denmark, South Carolina. Brett is a *** player and has some very good skills. We will have to do some work to get him though, but I suspect we will have a shot. We may have to compete against the likes of Duke and Kentucky. The small forward target we identify is Jerrell Walker, from Charleston, SC - a *** star prospect. He has a good inside game and some potential with the jump shot. He has to learn to defend though. We will see how it works if we can get him. His top school now is The Citadel. The last scholarship, as of right now, will go to PF Andrew Damron if he wants it. Andrew is a *** player from Lenior, NC. Damron is a presence inside and lists Gardner Webb as his favorite right now. He has a good inside game, upside as a rebounded, and can be a great defender. The first bit of news is good news. Brett Clemmer, a very talented PG decided to commit to Gardner Webber. I am very excited about him coming here. Rueben Quinn, however, decided to go to Georgetown. Darman dropped interest in us quick after South Florida started pursuing, and he signed with them. Here is Clemmer’s player card: Code:

Roster Evaluation
Code:
Overall Grade: B The Front Court is a bit weaker. We have more of role players in the front court. Junior Gale Lamp will start at center this season, after out working Freshman of the Year Kim Lambert. He has a decent inside game but is not a great rebounded or defender. Freshman Samual Anderson gets the nod at power forward. He is no Taylor Pritchard, but he will score some points. He can rebound but is not a great defender. Jay Wooden starts at SF this year. He can really grab some rebounds and is a good defender but he can not score at all. Kim Lambert will be expected to provide some depth. Joseph Johnson and Jeffery Riggs will not see much playing time. Carl Morrison will have to back up at SF and Derrick Nance will get some playing time as well. Depth is a real concern here. Overall Grade: D+

With the loss of two recruits going elsewhere, we must now turn our focus to finding replacements. I figured I might as well go guard heavy and have a stellar back court. We offer scholarships to SG Stephen Patterson, a *** player from Hemingway, SC and to SG Eric Mars from Durham, NC. Mars is a bit of along shot. Both of these kids can stroke a jump shot. We also evaluated some big men in case we decide to again go in that direction. Code:
Sacramento State beats us the next the game and our lack of offense is very apparent. Thompson came off the bench and was the leading scorer and had eleven points. After the game, I make some change to our strategy and start Thompson at SF. The changes do not really pay off as the next game Sacred heart ponds us by 17 and things are looking really bleak. I figured we would least be decent outside of the conference. My plan is to go back to the basics and what worked last year for us and that was the 2-3 zone instead of the man. Stephen Patterson, who I thought for sure would commit, turned us down and went to Georgia. The longer we drag out some of these recruits, the more chance we have at losing them.

We three scholarships still available, a once bright recruiting class may look to be fading. We need to seal the deal desperately on Jerrell Walker and he lists Gardner Webb as his first choice. He will have some problems academically when he gets here, but I think he will be a very good player. Eric Mars is another focal point of recruiting attention. He lists his interest in us as average, and has another scholarship offer Georgia State, who at this time he likes better. Our other scholarship is offered to C Adrian Goolsby, a 6`9 and *** center from Delaware. I really like this kid and so for he has no scholarship offers so hopefully he will become interested. Code:
We play our first game in the Atlantic Sun Conference and comes against a 4-1 Campbell squad. They whip us pretty good. Oshaughnessy did have 12 points but can not do it by himself, and 12 points is far from an offensive outbreak. The next game we played that same Campbell squad and played them a lot tougher, but still lost by 5. Anderson and Oshaughnessy were the leading scorers with eight a piece. The next game matters get even worse as we lose by 14 to a not very good Loyla-Maryland team. It is looking like we simply do not have the talent to compete this year with anyone. Wooden has 14 and Oshaughnessy pours in 16 but we simply can not defend. The next game we beat Eastern Kentucky by eight to finally stop the six game losing skid. Gale Lamp had 12 and Oshaughnessy and Thompson had 10 each. We play another out of conference game and beat Florida A&M by 15. Maybe things are starting to click for this team. Wooden had 14 and Oshaughnessy poured in 11 and Anderson dropped off 12. Next up we have to go in and travel to play Central Florida in what is sure to be a tough conference match-up. We get smoked by 30 points. There is not much to say about this one. We couldn’t defend them. The next game we travel on the road to play the Mean Green of North Texas. They are 3-5 and I have a glimmer of hope that this game can be won. We got beat by nine points on a game that just got away from us. Wooden hit for 15 but the rest of the offense did not click. The 4-6 Troy State team came to town and I think we may can win this game as well. They beat us by eight points. They had a player score 34 points. Then to add my disgust, we get beat by William and Mary by three points. Derrick Nance did score eleven points but we lost to an out of conference team. We then drop another out of conference game to Arkansas Pine-Bluff by three and this is getting really bad. Wooden had 15 and Thompson had 12. The good news is recruiting we signed Jerrell Walker who will help a lot next year. The bad news is Mars decided to go to Florida State and Goolsby went to Penn State. In addition, we find out starter Gale Lamp and key reserve Jose Thompson are academically suspended next month. Oh the anguish! Here is Walker's Player Card: Code:

Nice run last year! Congrats!
That is a rough start this year, eh? Lots of room to go up, that's for sure! Let's hope you can avoid getting bumped back down. |

If you will remember where I left off, a while back, Gardner Webb was struggling. We are 3-11 and have yet to win a conference game. Two key players, C Gale Lamp and SG Jose Thompson are out for the month due to poor academics. We only have two players committed for next year and the pickings are starting to get slim. Hopefully we will be able to turn things around this month, but I do not have high hopes. We identify a new big man target is 6’10, 225 lb big man from Cary, NC. He is yet to have any offers which scares me away a bit, but he should be ok. We just need depth. He is listed as very low interest. As long as a big school does not come in and offer we should be in ok shape. We spend the rest of our recruiting budget by hitting the road looking for shooting guards. This is not a position we have to have, but it would be nice to add another player to replace the departing senior Oshaughnessy. We have to make several changes to the starting line-up to replace the players we lost. Jay Wooden, a true SF, will have to start at center. The true freshman Samual Anderson starts at PF and he is joined in the starting line-up by fellow true freshman Gregory Carter at SF. Oshaughnessy and Jack Chandler will start in the back court. Code:
The month starts off with us getting a whipping by Birmingham Southern. There is not much to say there. We do rebound and beat Texas A&M-CC at home. Oshaughnessy chipped with a cool 20 points and freshman Vaughn Foy scored 14. We drop another conference game on the road to Jacksonville by 14. Carter showed a flash scoring 19 points. We lose an out of conference game to Georgia State. Oshaughnessy scored 18 points. It seems we can get production out of only one player during the game. If we would ever come together, we could do well. Next up is the battle of terrible, when Mercer comes to town. Both teams were winless in conference play. Mercer beat us. Oshaughnessy had 22 and Carter had 12, but the rest can not score at all. We next played at Jacksonville State, which at the time was leading the conference. We went on the road, and only lost by two points. I am not sure what got in the team. We had a balanced scoring attack from our starters led by Anderson with 15. The next game we blow it against a weak UC-Riverside team. I just do not get it. This has been an awful year. Oshaughnessy scored 20 but got no help from his teammates. Belmont denies us our first conference by beating us at home by 2. Oshaughnessy had 19. Timothy Martin, the big man we offered to at the beginning of the month, decided to go to Connecticut. Sigh. I fear with the pitiful year we are having this season, recruiting will suffer next year. We need to get fresh faces in but they just do not want to come.

Keep this up (not the losing). I have read every word and I enjoy it! With college basketball starting up and FBCB collecting dust I will probably come up with something soon.
I will be reading...proceed!

You seemed to have gotten some fairly decent recruits for being such a low prestige team. How many of those A's in Potential ended up being real once on your roster? I suspect that due to your low scouting, they don't come across as well. Just curious.

As you can see, they do not stack up exactly as they were being recruiting but they are still pretty good players with bright futures. For next year, I really do not know how the two recruits I have signed right now will turn out. EDIT: Format is still bad, I may turn off this WYSIWYG editor.

If you will remember, we decided to go out and look for a quality SG. We even turned our attention overseas, where we found Erdmann Nickel from Munster, Germany. He ha some height at 6`6. He is a pure shooter and noting else. Nevertheless, he could be a quality player for our program. We also chose to evaluate some power forwards. There could be some good players in the players that we have contacted, they have decent stats. Big man Gale Lamp and key reserve SG Jose Thompson return from academic suspension this month. This will give us more depth and maybe a bit of an inside game, which we sorely lacked the last month. Code:
Stetson came in and beat us by 6 at home. Jose Thompson led the scoring attack with 12 points. Jay Wooden added 10 additional points in the losing effort. The next game we played that same Stetson team and got drilled. Oshaughnessy scored 21 points. I have a feeling he will be sorely missed next season Troy State took it to us and it is becoming painfully obvious we were not ready for this conference. Mercer, the only real chance we had at winning a conference, beat us by 5 at their place. Oshaughnessy scored 15 and Wooden had 13 in the losing effort. We finally won a conference game over North Texas, which I believe was demoted from the Sun Belt conference. Wooden had 15 and Jack Chandler managed to add 12 from a non scoring PG role. Jacksonville came to town and we beat them by 20. They are about just as bad as we are. Wooden is starting to show progress, pouring in 17. Oshaughnessy had 14. Jacksonville State, which is competing for the conference championship, came in and took care of business beating us by 11. Anderson had 13 and Foy had 10, as the two freshman are giving us something to build on. We beat Belmont to give us our third conference win of the year. Oshaughnessy had 18 points. We beat out of conference foe Morris Brown by 13. I am really looking forward to next year when we get to play teams like this. Oshaughnessy had 18 points and Lamp and Anderson scoring 27 points. The next game we hold Lipscomb to 34 points and get the win. Oshaughnessy had 14 and his back-up Thompson had 11. Nickel, the German SG we were pursuing, decided to go to Oregon State.

We are going to offer a scholarship to another foreign SG, this time it is Coburg, Germany native Helmuth Held. He has the potential to be a good defender and may be able to shoot the ball a little as well. I also am going to go after PF Herman Sweatt, from Monson, MA. He is only a * player, but I am a bit concerned about depth underneath. Code:
Here are the final conference standings: Code:
The PF we offered to signed. The German SG went to Arkansas. Here is the player card: Code:

The 2004-05 campaign was a bit disappointing. I felt like we could have done better than 10-23. We do have to replace Oshaughnessy so that will certainly hurt. However, in the second part of the season I felt like we were much better and the results showed. Here is some final results. Code:
We graduate three seniors this season. Oshaughnessy was the best player but Chandler was also a starter. Mazurek was a reserve guard who never saw many minutes. Here are the final player cards: Code:

Team Prestige: 5 (+1) New Athletic Board Goal: Finish with a .500 conference record. As expected, we dropped down to a different conference. The good news is that it is an actual conference with a NCAA bid. It is the Big South. I am a bit surprised they board asked us to finish with .500 record. Birmingham Southern is the only school with a lower prestige than we have. None of the less, I expect those expectations to be met. No coaching offers come and I do not get a points increase. This was not really expected after our last season. The budget this season will be $158,437. I am not sure how that compares to the previous years and really will not know until I get into recruiting since I have not kept up. I am thinking it may be the exact same as last year. Our staff stays the same. Recruiting Coordinator: Garret Austin (3rd year) Age: 27 Salary: $30,000 Recruiting: 35 Lead Scout: Andrew Oglesby (2nd year) Age: 44 Salary: $30,000 Scouting: 28 Coaching Assistant: Daniel Fox (3rd year) Age: 45 Salary: $30,000 Coaching Offense: 21 Coaching Defense: 38

2005-2006 Schedule
We have 12 available out of conference games this season, but only four of them can be at home. We will look for this easiest games possible. We are not ready to compete with the big boys, that is clear. A winning season can do wonders this year for our program. We came up with this schedule: Code:

Preseason Recruiting A new recruiting season has come, and again we have four scholarships to give out. Gale Lamp and Joseph Johnson, a seldom used reserve, will both be graduating. That will leave with only one center on the roster. We will have Kim Lambert and Samual Anderson back at PF next year, but I still may add one more here. Jay Wooden will graduate but freshman Jerrell Walker looks really solid as a freshman. We will probably add a SG as well. The PG position looks set with the future with super freshman Brett Clemmer and sophmore Vaughan Foy back him up. Here are the wants: A solid center. A back-up center, one who can rebound and defend when needed. A swing type player, a mix between a SF and SG. With the last scholarship we may pursue a really good player and just hope we get lucky. Who knows. Away we go. Our budget was cut in half from last year, as we can only spend $6,843 a month. Our coaches will be sleeping in parks on trips this year. I told them to consider a business adventure. We identify what recruits we want after the first month. This is always is a big help, and our evaluations went very well. At center, we offered scholarships to two players. Thomas Campbell is a 6`10, 234 lb. wide body from Bishopville, SC. His ratings appear that he has good potential on his inside game. He is an ok defender but not much of a rebounding guy. Ruben Simpkins has about the same frame, and he is from Walnut Cove, NC. He is a really good defender and can knock down a jump shot to give us a different look. At small forward, I really like a guy by the name of Dwayne Friedrich from Dublin, GA. He is a great defender, has a solid inside game, and can pass very well. If we get this guy, it will be huge. We take our shot in the dark at SG Rudolph Thompson, from Lafayette, GA. He is a great player, my scout says. He is rated as a **** player. If we get him, great. If not, we put the scholarship back in the pocket for next year. We only get on decision from our players we go after. Dwayne Friedrich, the SF, decides on Miami. I wanted him bad and put a lot of resources into doing so. Turns out he did not want to be a cup cake.

2005-2006 Season Preview
I felt like this is our best roster going into any season prior to this. We have a pretty good starting line-up and some depth to go along with it. I do not know if the results will be there, but I feel pretty good going into the season. Code:
Front Court. Gale Lamp (7.4 PPG, 5.0 RPG) returns for his senior season and will start at center. Sophomore Samual Anderson (7.2 PPG, 4.9 RPG) will return to his starting PF role. The key addition here is freshman Jerrell Walker. This guy has the potential to be good and give us another legitimate go to threat. He can not defend, but will put up a lot of points. Providing depth will be 2nd team all conference performer Jay wooden, who will back up all three front court positions. Junior Kim Lambert, a former freshman of the year, and senior Derick Nance will also provide depth. Grade: C+

We continue our recruiting efforts on several of the players mentioned above. We also add SG Brent Brown from Elizabethtown, NC to the list of offered players. Heis 6`3 and is pretty solid. Code:
We drop our first game on the road to UC Riverside. Jerrell Walker had 12 points while Clemmer had 8. Hopefully this was just first game jitters or we will be in for a long season. We stay out west for our next game and lose by a point to Sacramento State. Anderson was very solid, putting in 14 points and 10 rebounds. Mt. Saint Mary’s demolishes us and my hopes for a good season our vanishing quickly. I guess we are just so young. The refs were calling really tight and we were forced to go deep into our bench. We drop a game to Southeastern Louisiana by 12. Again, we go tinto some serious foul trouble. We gout our first win by beating Stephen F. Austin. Foy scored 11 to lead the starters but the reliable Jay Wooden poured in 14. Jose Thompson contributed with 10. All three of the original players declined scholarships to go elsewhere. Thompson is going to Oklahoma, Simpkins is going to Wake Forrest, and Campbell is going to UNC Charlotte. This was a very tough month if you are a Gardner Webb fan.

I think we will have to start all over again recruiting, which really sucks. We got lucky and got some good players in the first couple of years, but I suspect this will be a down year. Brett Brown is not likely to come here, as two schools are head of us and he has offers from both. We offer a scholarship to SF Dane Duty from Wingfield HS in Jackson, MS. It is my home state so hopefully that will have some bearing. Code:
We start off the month with a good, solid road win over IPFW. Walker and Clemmer were superb, combining for 29 points. Wooden chipped in with 10 off the bench and Thompson had 9. We lose a road game by a point to Morris Brown. Walker had 18 points. This is so frustrating because I know we are so close to turning the corner. The frustration continues as Sacred Heart beats us by 2 on the road. Clemmer had 21 points. Walker had 14 while Gale and Anderson had 10 a piece. We beat Chicago State on the road, which was a good win. Walker had 13 and Wooden had 12. We beat Prairie View A&M, which isn’t saying much because they are terrible. Walker had 14 but it was a solid team effort with everyone scoring Just when I think we have going, we drop a game we should have won, this time to St. Peters. Walker and Anderson had 10 points each to lead the scoring. We conclude the month by beating out Southern by nine points. It was a great defensive effort. Anderson had 13 while Walker, Clemmer and Lamp had 10 each. We are 5-7 with conference playing coming up and I am confident we will reach that .500 record goal. Brown, as expected, heads elsewhere. He is going to UNC-Charlotte. Duty will also be going to another this school, this time it is Tulane though. Get ready for a tough year recruiting wise readers.

We spend most of the recruiting budget evaluating players here and there. We do offer one scholarship. The player is a SG from Melrose High School in Memphis, TN. He is a *** and his name is Jason Rioux. We are his first scholarship offer. He is not a great player, but when you know the crap is about to hit the fan, you get desperate. Code:
The first conference we play is at Liberty, one of the favorites to win the conference. We lose by 5 in a game that was so close to victory. Clemmer had 24 but he did not have much help elsewhere. We blow out Charleston Southern at home to give us the first conference win. Samples, a walk on, had 22 points. Walker had 16. Vaughn Foy suffered a pretty bad injury, sidelining him for 36 days. We lose to a terrible Birmingham Southern team by 3. We just did not play well. Clemmer had 19. This lost hurts a lot because I know we are much better than that. We beat Radford at home by 10. Clemmer had 23 and Walker had 15. Clemmer seems to create himself chances for himself at the PG position. Charleston Southern, a team we beat the crap out of earlier, returns the favor to us. There was no bright spots in this game. I guess it is just the fact that we are so young that we can not win on the road. We lose to Liberty at home by two. I can not count how many close games we have lost this season. Walker and Clemmer combined for 48 points. Coastal Carolina is pitiful but again we can't win on the road so we lose by 10. Walker had 22 points. This guy is really solid offensively. Radord beats us by 5 as our road woes continue. Has anyone seen anything like this? Samples had 14. We finally win a conference road game, beating VMI by 3. Walker had 22 and Samples had 19. Samples has turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. Rioux goes to Duke. Wow, maybe he was good after all. We are not going to sign any three star players this year.

The news is not good recruiting wise. We are turning to the junior college ranks in the hopes of getting more experienced players who can contribute immediately. We offer a scholarship to Springville, AL native Garry Barto. We evaluate some more players and we hope to know more next month. Code:
Elon starts off by beating us at home by three points. Ouch. Clemmer had 21 in the losing effort. We return back to Elon and they beat us handily this time. Clemmer was again productive offensively scoring 14. We demolish High Point at home by 26 points. Lamp had 14 to lead the balanced socring attack. Where has this been all season? Disappointment returns as we lose at home to Coastal Carolina. This is so frustrating! Samples scored 10 points in seven minutes. We beat High Point by three on the road. This win puts in good shape to make the conference tournament. Clemmer, who moved back to SG, scored 16 to lead the scoring. We beat VMI by a good margin. Walker had 20 in the effort. We beat Birmingham Southern in the last game of the regular season to clinch a spot in the Big South tournament. Walker was not to be denied, scoring 29 points. Barto, the Junior College center, committed. So we get our first commitment and we are playing in the postseason tourney for the first time ever. Life is good! Here is the player card for Barto: Code:

I feel like we may have found a couple of gems in two young high school shooting guards. They are Matthew Wahl, from Goshen, OH and Edison Washington from Sioux City, IA. We also offer a scholarship to junior college center Gerald Nurse, from Oklahoma. Code:
We made the conference tourney as the #4 seed, meaning we will be wearing our home whites for at least the first game. We win the first game over Charleston Southern fairly easily. Anderson and Walker had 14 points each. Next up was a taller task in #1 seed Radford. We were not up to it and lost by 16. A disappointing finish to a disappointing season. Elon beat Radford in the final to clinch the automatic berth to the NCAA tourney. Two of the three players we were recruiting committed to us. Nurse and Washington are coming. Here are the player cards: Code:

This year saw the emergence of two star freshman, Jerrell Walker and Brett Clemmer. We did win 13 games but I expected better. We will be sticking around in this conference, and I think we can win 20 games next year. Personal expectations will be high for me personally. Code:

Team Prestige 7(+2) Athletic Board Goal: Finish with a .500 conference record We remain in the Big South conference, which of course was expected. Western Carolina is new to the conference. For whatever reason, the code one my dynasty is not showing up so I can not say who left. Everyone else is still there. Our recruiting class was ranked #299. That was by far my lowest class ever. I am not sure what really happened. I guess we will feel the effects in a few years. I get no coaching offers and I also will not get any points increase. The budgets this season is $163,312. That is a slight increase but I still need much more to work with. A good season here would do wonders. Preseason Recruiting We have two scholarships to work with this season. We have three graduating seniors, so we will get a bit creative with our recruiting to make sure we have a full roster. The first priority is getting a center. This has to be done this year. The other option is to bring in a power or a small forward. We could really go either direction here. We have a slight increase in our budget but we also only have two scholarships. Therefore, we should have sufficient funding for recruiting purposes. With that in mind, off we go. We choose to go after two centers. I will explain my reasoning shortly. The first guy we go after is 6`9, *** prospect from Kosciusko, MS - Jack Brubaker. This guy has some serious talent if we my scouts are right (and so far they have been pretty good). The second guy we pursue is Branden Kirksey, from Vienna, VA - a *** prospect. I figure if we sign Brubaker, we can move this guy to PF. I think it will be an effective strategy. We also recruit back up options, something we could not afford last year. Brubaker decided to go to Auburn. That is ok though. That guy was a real stud, however. Kirksey I believe is close to committing to us.

2006-07 Season Preview
Code:
Back Court: Super Freshman Brett Clemmer (10.9 PPG) and steady Junior Vaughan Foy (4.3 PPG, 3.3 APG) will return to anchor the backcourt this season. They are expected to be the starters. They are both quality defenders. Sophomore Sidney Samples (6.4 PPG) will provide relief at the PG position and junior Jose Thompson (6.7 PPG) will back up at the SG role. A couple of freshman were signed to provide depth, but they most likely will be red shirted. Grade: B+ Front Court: Jerrell Walker(13.3 PPG) highlights the mix here, which returns to all conference performers from last season. PF Samual Anderson (8.6 PPG, 5.4 RPG) returns for his junior season and will start at PF. Kim Lambert, who was a reserve last season, will see the starting action at center. Lambert started at center as a freshman, where he won Independent Conference Freshman of the Year honors. JUCO transfers Garry Barto and Gerald Nurse will provide depth, as will junior Gregory Carter (2.4 PPG). Grade: B-

We continue to pursue Kirksey, even though his interest has backed off us a bit. We also offer a scholarship to Marcus DeLuna, a talented PF from Lancaster, SC. He was really our number three option, so I am glad he is still on the board. We are his first offer. Code:
The year starts with us thumping Stephen F. Austin in the first game on the year. Anderson scored 18 points. Thompson was great off the bench putting in 15 points in 19 minutes of action. We move to 2-0 by beating Prairie View A&M by 19. Foy had a break out game, scoring 16. Anderson had 14, Walker had 13, and Clemmer had 12. We beat Southern by 12 and things are looking really good. No one has come close to really challenging us this season. Clemmer had 20 and Walker and Thompson had 10 each. We finish the first month with a 3-0 start. Kirksey goes to George Mason. That really puts a damper on my parade. No word yet from DeLuna.

We continue to pursue DeLuna. He has now listed Tennessee as his top choice but he does not have an offer from them. The Vols just signed another PF off my list, so hopefully they will not purse Deluna. We offer a scholarship to C William Medrano from Newport, NC. He lists Florida as his top choice but we are his only offer. Code:
We drop a game at home to Florida A&M. Anderson scored 15 but played terrible defense. If one thing is suspect this season, it is our defense in the front court. St. Peter’s beat us by 5. I am going to stop scheduling them because they beat us every year. Clemmer stroked the net for 24. We get back on the winning track by beating Morris Brown. Walker scored 15 while Thompson poured in a steady 11. The pitiful Chicago State beats us by a good number of points. There were of course no real bright spots, just frustration. We beat Sacramento State by four at home. Walker had 16, Samples had 12, and Clememr had 14. Southeastern Louisiana State drill us by 20. Sigh. We get good news as the two players we are recruiting commit. Here are the player cards: Code:
