I don't really like the term "ne'er do well" (I have an aversion to common words with apostrophes in them like "li'l"), but that's probably not far off.

Really? I'll keep that in mind... I try to squeeze in archaic and/or underused vernacular into my vocabulary, just to keep it lively.

Would you prefer "scalawag?"

Lots better.

Although if you could work in the term "shenanigans" that'd make me truly happy.

modern usage has really hosed up some terms.

Almost everyone in America is a liberal. Most of what we call "liberals" are socialists.

Well put. I stand corrected. May the wisdom of Fritz shine as a beacon throughout the dark and soggy halls of FOFC for many generations.

And, IMO, most of what we call "conservatives" today are really right wing activists, but who's counting?

FWIW, that link is a bit extreme for my tastes, and I don't really care for W.

Just a couple of generations ago, 90% of the country was what we now call "conservative" (pro-business, moral/biblical values, anti-abortion, etc. (If you want to bring up Jim Crow laws, weren't they enforced by Southern Democrats?) We couldn't have been a nation of nearly all right-wing activists since back then, most politicians and voters considered themselves moderates. Since then, we seem to have forced polarization or perhaps it was a shift brought on by the left-wing activists demonizing what most believed?

You are wrong, Fritz. Everyone in America is a libertarian, but we are divided into happy libertarians and unhappy libertarians. A famous science fiction writer told me that a few years ago.

rather than get drawn into this whole debate again, I'll simply point out that albionmoonlight's signature is incorrect.

much like his opinion of conservatives.

I hate to admit this, but as a strongly-concervative Republican I wouldn't mind voting for someone other than GWB. Of course, I thought that before the last presidential election, too.

What are you talking about? Atlanta is a bastion of liberalism. I think your thinking of Mississippi.

A couple of generations ago, the politics of the left and right (liberal and conservative) were different. Over time, they both slowly changed, did 180's on positions, and both seemed to have move to the extreme.

Sorry, Bucc, but it's a little more complicated than being able to just blame it on the left...

Sabotai,

It's never more complicated than being able to just blame it on the left.

Ah, another one of these threads that has devolved into petty political name calling. Not that I'm above that sort of thing. Still, I can't stand Dubya (didn't like him in Texas, don't like him now) but this site has too much hyperbole even for me. I'd prefer 50 good reason to 1000 flimsy ones.

City of Atlanta = so liberal that Massachusetts & California are jealous.

Many Atlanta suburbs = so conservative that they worry Pat Robertson is too liberal.

Other Georgia metro areas = split heavily along racial lines.

Rest of Georgia = A mix of Bush, Coulter & Robertson conservatives.

There are many reasons we often refer here to "two Georgia's" and/or "The State of Atlanta" & "The State of Georgia". This is one of those reasons.

Or the "The State of Marrying Your Sister" & "The State of Marrying Your First Cousin". Yes my friends, Georgia has many names.
