Finally!

College football season is here starting this Saturday! Granted, it's only Cal and Kansas St., but it's always exciting to watch those potential upsets unfold.

Who can forget games like:

Louisville over Florida St. in a downpour on Thursday night?
Hawaii beating an unbeaten BYU (we'll sue the BCS!) team with 72 on the board?
Oklahoma St. pulling 2 straight out of their behinds against the Sooners?
Memphis winning at Tennessee when that kid nearly sat down on the field during his kickoff return and went all the way for a TD?
Miami beating UCLA to ruin their unbeaten season in a hurricane-delayed game?

What are your favorite college football memories, ones that aren't so obvious as last year's Fiesta Bowl?

My favorite thing about college football is you never know what you're going to see, or when you're going to see it... which is why I try to watch as much as possible!

One thing's for sure, though... San Jose State and Grambling getting on TV is laughable.

Hmm...let's see. In it's long and inglorious history, NC State has had some bright spots:

1998: Becoming the second ACC team to defeat Florida State, beating them 24-7 in Raleigh as Torry Holt showed why he would become a top draft pick by the Rams.

2001: Becoming the first ACC team to beat FSU in Tallahassee, 31-28. I had to suffer by watching the ticker on ABC as I live in Ann Arbor. They switched over just in time to watch the last-gasp drive of FSU fall short.

2002: Beat FSU for the second year in a row (first ACC team to do that), crushed the Irish in the Gator Bowl, crushed the Tigers in Death Valley, survived Texas Tech in Lubbock, and set a new team record for wins with 11 (I did say it was an inglorious history).

1994: Last really successful year before Chuck Amato's arrival as team ties record for wins and rallies to defeat Mississippi State in the Peach Bowl.

1986: The first really good year of State football that I can remember, which included beating Carolina for the first time in forever, a drubbing of Clemson on national television, and a trip to the Peach Bowl only to watch VT's lineman get, ahem, "injured" to stop the clock with a few ticks left and then the salaciousness of the VT kicker who decided to celebrate his winning kick by flipping off the State sideline.

As a side note, State did win the conference title in 1978, but I was only three and hardly aware of college football or anything else for that matter. Monte Kiffin (yes, that Monte Kiffin) took over at State for the next few years, apparently entertained the faithful, but failed to bring anything more than .500 records which got him canned, only to be replaced by quite possibly the worst coach in Wolfpack history, Tom Reed, who went 3-8, 3-8, and 2-9 during the last three years of his tenure (this would be about the time I have strong recollections of State football...I vaguely remember Kiffin's dismissal being announced, but the ugliness of the Reed years is pretty sharp). In contrast, of course, Jimmy V had laid claim to the '83 NCAA basketball title and State was getting NCAA bids pretty much every year except 1983-84. My, how things have changed.

The Georgia/Georgia Tech classics of a couple of years ago, where there were what, 3 years in a row where the game was decided by a touchdown or less?

I guess it says something about how good FSU is when everyone talks about them like they are the NY Yankees of college football - happy when they lose, even if you've got no interest in the outcome, measuring your team's success largely by your victories over them, etc.

It's a bitch being good.

This made me laugh a little....

http://sportspickle.com/features/2003-0813-bowden.html

Bobby Bowden Robbed, Sodomized by Starting Tailback

Florida State coach Bobby Bowden was robbed and sodomized by his starting tailback on Sunday, the first time the head coach himself has been the target of a crime by one of his players.

Yet the longtime Seminole icon said he doubted the player who robbed and sodomized him was guilty, but stated that if he was, that there was no way the coaching staff could keep their eyes on the players at all times. “He’s a good kid, I doubt it was really him who did that to me, even though it looked a lot like him,” said Bowden. “But boys will be boys, you know.”

The assault occurred late Sunday evening outside the Seminoles' football offices as Bowden walked alone to his car. Bowden's starting tailback robbed the coach of his cash and credit cards before repeatedly sodomizing him over a 15-minute period. The player was nabbed by police three hours later after Bowden provided a physical description (Bowden refused to identify for police who attacked him by name) of the assailant. An August 26th trial is scheduled.

Bowden’s victimization is the latest incident in a long line of off-the-field troubles his program has experienced in the last decade. Since the end of last season, the 73-year old coach has been duped out of $1.6 million by his eldest son and endured the gambling trial of a former quarterback. Whispers that Bowden has lost control of his football program have escalated into all-out public debate, with the coach on the defensive.

Yet Bowden denies that getting robbed and sodomized by one of his own players is an example of a loss of control.

“Okay, so let’s say it was my starting tailback who did this to me,” said Bowden. “I just don’t see how that is a reflection on me or this program. I do not understand how you can say that if a kid goes out at two o'clock at night and gets in trouble that the coach should have stopped it. Folks, some of these kids are doing the same things I did when I was in college. The fact that it was me – the head coach of the team – who was robbed and sodomized is an entirely different matter.”

Bowden said he has no plans to suspend his tailback until the case winds its way through the legal process.

“Innocent until proven guilty, right? These are kids, folks. Let’s not rush to judgment here,” said Bowden. “Just because I commented to the police that the assailant who robbed and sodomized me looked exactly like my starting tailback doesn’t mean it was him. Anyone could get their hands on an appropriately numbered Florida State football practice jersey, have an uncanny resemblance to one of my players, call me ‘Coach Bowden,’ rob and sodomize me and then ask what time the team meeting is the next day, am I right folks? So I will not suspend him until justice takes its course.”

Edit - Obviously this is just a satirical piece...

Two of the more memorable sporting events I've ever been to were college football games:

Auburn/Alabama, Iron Bowl, 2001: Not so much for the game, as it was a blowout, but the atmosphere surrounding the whole weekend was incredible, unlike anything I've seen for a game in Michigan.

Michigan/Washington, 2002: Many times you have heard of a stadium shaking due to the fans, but until you've seen 100,000+ people going crazy over a last-second field goal, you haven't seen anything. Truly the craziest I have ever seen a crowd become.

Also, football Saturdays at CMU deserve special mention; waking up early (which in college is around 10am for a Saturday), knocking a couple back, walking to the stadium, tailgating for a couple hours, a few more beers, going to watch the first half of the Central game (at which point everyone would leave since the game is already basically over), walking back to the apartment, having a few more beers, watch the afternoon football on cable, have a few more beers, watch the first part of the ESPN night game, have a few more beers, then go out and party, when the drinking really started Bliss.

BTW, although I generally hate attending football games, it looks like I might be going to the NC State/FSU game this year - my first in-person football game since the year FSU beat NC State in 1997. I think that was the year Holt scored 5 TDs. That was the longest athletic event I ever sat through. FSU led something like 27-0 after the first quarter, but it took over an hour to play, and I think the game was well over 4 and half hours.

This was really the game that gave NC State its first bit of confidence against FSU. The wins since then built off of this performance.

I guess I said only because most people think it's going to be a blowout. I'm looking forward to seeing K-State's offense in action. They're not often on national TV.

Wow, so many great memories I'm sure I'll forget one, but a sampling (and yes, they're all Husky games):

- 1978 Rose Bowl, Washington vs. Michigan
A huge underdog going in, the Huskies jump out to a 24-0 lead before weathering a furious Wolverine comeback. The Huskies prevailed 27-20 as LB Michael Jackson (no, not that Michael Jackson) made one of the most amazing interceptions I've ever seen at the UW 3-yard line with a minute left, then Nesby Glasgow made an interception in the Husky end zone to end the game and seal the win. The first Husky game I remember watching and it hooked me.

- 1981, USC at Washington
#3 USC was still the powerhouse of the Pac-10 and was led by Marcus Allen, who crossed the 2,000-yard plateau in this game. The game was played in one of the annual November windstorms that hit Seattle, this one a real doozy. Aside from Allen, neither offense could generate much, but the Huskies held a 6-3 lead late in the game and kicked off. The ball held up in the wind and the return men couldn't catch it, with the ball bouncing toward the end zone. A huge pile-up ensued with the Huskies LB Fred Small recovering the ball for a TD: UW wins 13-3.

- 1983, Michigan at Washington
#8 Michigan visited Husky Stadium on a glorious September Saturday and the 2 teams engaged in a great battle back and forth. Michigan held a 24-17 lead late in the 4th quarter, but QB Steve Pelluer led the Huskies on a brilliant late game drive, passing for the TD to bring make the score 24-23 and then connecting with SE Mark Pattison in the left corner of the endzone for the 2-pt conversion and the win as the packed stadium erupted into bedlam.

- 1985 Orange Bowl, Oklahoma vs. Washington
The 10-1 Huskies became the first Pac-10 team to go to the Orange Bowl to face the #2 Oklahoma Sooners. The Huskies held an early 14-0 lead before the Sooners rallied to take a 17-14 lead in the 4th. QB Hugh Millen then came off the bench for the Huskies to rally them to a 28-17 win as TB Jacque Robinson became the only player to win Rose Bowl and Orange Bowl MVP honors. The Huskies pounded the Sooners vaunted defense with 192 rushing yards and their 3-5 defense designed for this game held the Sooner option attack to 286 total yards. The Huskies finished #2 that season to an overrated BYU team.

- 1990, USC at Washington
The #5 Trojans came into Husky stadium on a beautiful September day and were steamrolled as the Husky 46 defense borrowed from the Bears and DT Steve Emtman had their coming out parties. Trojan QB Todd Marinovich uttered the now classic line following the game that all he saw "was purple". UW wins 31-0.

- 1991, Washington at Nebraska
The #4 Huskies traveled to #9 Nebraska in a key early season matchup for a team with their sights set on the National Championship. The Huskers held a 21-9 advantage in the 3rd quarter before Washington rolled off 27 unanswered points behind QB Billy Joe Hobert as the offense rolled and the defense clamped down. The Huskies finished with 618 total yards of offense while holding Nebraska to 308, and only 135 rushing yards. This game was a key victory in the Huskies' march to the title.

- 1992 Rose Bowl, Washington vs. Michigan
The #2 Huskies met #4 Michigan in the Rose Bowl with the Huskies' undefeated season and National Title hopes on the line, and the team responded with a convincing 34-14 win as they overpowered a talented Michigan squad. The win capped coach Don James' first undefeated season and he was rewarded as the Huskies were voted #1 in the final coaches poll and narrowly missed winning the AP poll by just 4 points to undefeated Miami.

- 1994, Washington at Miami
The #5 Hurricanes had won an NCAA-record 58 straight home games in the Orange Bowl and the fans had already pasted Washington's name on the stands as the 59th victim. They looked prescient as the 'Canes held a slim margin at halftime, but the Huskies roared to a huge 3rd quarter highlighted by a 75-yard screen pass to FB Richard Thomas for a TD as the better-conditioned Huskies withstood the heat and humidity to win going away 38-20.

- 2000, Miami at Washington
The #4 'Canes made their first visit to Husky Stadium and found it not to their liking. The Huskies jumped to a 20-3 halftime lead and led 34-22 early in the 4th quarter before the Hurricanes rallied for a late TD to close the gap to 34-29. The onside kick was recovered by the Huskies and they were able to run the clock down to 20 seconds before punting back to the 'Canes, who were stopped short of the end zone. This was the last defeat Miami suffered until last year's Fiesta Bowl. The Huskies would go on win the Rose Bowl and finish 11-1.

You are forgetting the Colorado vs Michigan game.. Where kordell threw that miracle hail Mary pass.. that probably was as many yards as he threw for last year

Also that Kentucky vs Lsu game last year was a classic.. with the clueless Kentucky fans storming the field.. if they ever show it again tape it.. and see the reaction of the fan on camera as he turns and see's lsu celebrating a touchdown.. its hilarious

But my alltime fav is that Louisville Vs Fsu downpour game.. was a fun game to watch

You guys (well, maybe except dawgfan) have too short of memories.

1968 Rose Bowl - My first game I saw and got hooked when OJ ran juiced

1970, SU-Penn State. Only win against PSU from 1967-1986.

Pretty much all of the USC-Notre Dame games from the early 70s including one of the most memorable college football game ever in 1974, the Trojans trailed 24-6 at halftime but won 55-24 as Anthony Davis scored four touchdowns.

SDSU-BYU for the WAC title in 1979 (we don't talk about the outcome). I was in the SDSU band.

SDSU-Iowa, Holiday Bowl, 198something. So close, so very close.

SU-Auburn, 1987 season, Sugar Bowl. Fit to be tied.

1997, SU-Miami. Finally
1998, SU-Miami. Great joy in a rout.

Well, when you schedule all the directional teams (Northeastern Chicago State) and consistently have one of the lowest rated non-conference schedules in the country, you get what you deserve. . . no TV time.

Great joy in a rout.
you've seen oj play before your eyes/ good lord -- you really got history eh

Yeah, I'm sure nothing illegal is going on at FSU and they run a squeaky clean program, especially considering some of the characters they run through that program.

As for asking who someone else cheers for: it's just petty- defend your team and don't make it personal. I'm pretty sure KU isn't dirty in football- I should hope we would be better if we were (still, I'd rather have Terry Allen's squeaky clean program, winning 3 games a year than a dirty program that wins- good riddance Glen Mason)

Alas, having grown up close to Lawrence, I'm a KU basketball fan in addition to my more earned credentials (owing to a B.A. from their school) as a Wildcat fan.

Of course, then I had to go and add Purdue to the mix...but while the Rose Bowl season was fun, it just never took. So...Kansas sports: KSU football, KU basketball, and I'm generally heartbroken at the end of every sports season. Works out nicely.

1993: Not my favorite memory of course, but "The Crush" after Wisconsin beat Michigan on Halloween will stay in my mind forever. Luckily, no one died, although many students were "pulseless non-breathers" laying on the ground. I was in row 1, and was climbing over a fence when it fell down, but no one got hurt where I was.

The next week, we had a FG attempt to beat Ohio State and basically clinch a spot in the Rose Bowl. You could feel the tension, and I was scared that something similar might happen. OSU blocked the FG to end the game in a tie, which deflated the crowd and may have prevented another ugly incident. Fortunately, OSU blew their next game and UW went on to win the Rose Bowl.

C-Tac, are you going to the Gopher vs. Badger game? Even though it's played in one of the worst stadiums in college football, this guy will be there

I'm in Wahiawa on Oahu. I'm pretty pumped about the upcoming season. Went to a couple of practices, the defense looks like it's gonna be stellar this year. Akpan is a man among boys, did you hear he killed a freckin lion? Anyway, I hope Chang plays consistently this year and cuts down on the INTs. Are you planning on going to any of the games?

Yeah, that was during the "we can't beat Michigan" phase. Hopefully, that's all behind us now.

I remember that blocked kick, that would've ruined our season. Instead, the Wolverines got that honor. Imagine that game going to OT, though. That would've been awesome.

Just a little needling for Bucc and Marmel (and other Orangemen supporters...):

1997: A miracle in the Carrier Dome as the Orangemen cough up the football at the NC State goal line near the end of a game that looked like a Syracuse win. The miscue resulted in an OT game. Syracuse went first and scored the TD and XP. State responded with a TD of their own. In one of the last brilliant decisions of the Mike O'Cain era, he catches Syracuse off-guard and goes for two. The short out pass to Torry Holt works and State stuns the home crowd 32-31.

1998: State dismantled FSU 24-7, but immediately followed that with an egg-layer against Baylor in Waco. For whatever reason, the State squad that played FSU reappears in time for the Syracuse game and the Pack pummels the Orangemen in Raleigh. These two victories aren't enough, however, to save Mike O'Cain as he is fired after losing 10-6 in Charlotte to a Carolina squad that had been mediocre all year and was down to a running back playing QB because of injuries.

Last Year: Marshall beats Miami (OH) 36-34. Sophmore Stan Hill replaces Heisman candidate Byron Leftwich, throws 4 touchdowns and runs for the go ahead score with 5 seconds remaining. After the game Miami defensive coordinator John Wauford is arrested for shoving a fan that ran onto the field and Head Coach Terry Hoeppner has to appologize after Miami coaches trash the visitors coaching box following the game.

This one is actually getting ugly. Afterward Miami coaches accused Marshall of bugging the visiting locker room, prompting an NCAA investigation (which found nothing), and coaches tell stories of being afraid of someone poisoning their food while staying in Hunnington.

Enough said.

I was also at the Orange Bowl when CU beat Notre Dame 10-9. 50 yard line seats, ND section. Ahh, the memories. I need to hold those close to my heart, because CU is likely to lose 4 games this year.

Last year..

LSU vs Kentucky.. That was the most insane thing I've wittnessed in a sporting event.

Michigan vs Washington.. Philip Brabbs pulls one of his only FG's of the season out of his ass to win a classic. That was awesome. Ingenius!

The Colorado/Michigan game was the most memorable, but not in such a good way for me. Thankfully, LSU sort of overshadowed us just a bit.

I enjoyed watching Iowa State beating Nebraska, though the main reason for this is I have the same name as the ISU coach, so when the announcers were talking about what a great job he'd done coaching and building the program, I was pretending that they were talking about me.

Another memorable game was Minnesota against Penn State in Happy Valley. I believe the year was '99, but this was when Penn State was something like 8-0 and ranked in the top 3 in the country. Late in the game the Gophers are down, Kaliq throws deep down field on 4th down the pass is knocked away, but wideout Arland Bruce (who I was surprised to see returning the opening kickoff past the 50 for the Niners in their last preseason game) is able to come from behind and make the catch. First down Gophers, they continue the drive and are able to score to pull out the win and end the Nittany Lions undefeated streak.

Yes, that PSU-Minn. game was awesome! I remember watching that one on ESPN2, figuring another yawner.

Also, Clemson over Georgia Tech in OT, during Woody Dantzler's final visit to Atlanta (2001?). What a game, he pulls a 20-something yard QB draw up the middle, and the GT defense acted somehow shocked that he was running. I bought just that day's worth of ESPN Gameplan for Mrs. Butter, just to watch that game. Of course, GT didn't have much of a defense then. That was pretty sweet since GT had ended Clemson's unbeaten run the year before at 8-0.

Sadly, Clemson is pretty well down at the moment.

Most likely not. I'll probably be moving at the end of October or early November, but don't know the exact date yet. It would be cool to see the game though, even if it is in the Humptydome.

If we didn't allow a 4-play, 99-yard TD drive to OSU earlier, it wouldn't have come down to a damn FG. OT would indeed have been incredible.

Favorite college football moments for me seen in person:

1994 Ohio State beat the snot out of Michigan at the 'shoe. After the game the fans ran onto the field and because the cops pepper sprayed everyone near the goal post the fans started tearing chunk of the field up. It looked like a green rainstorm on the field. After the game I got to meet Bo Schembechler and had him sign my Ohio State hat (which I proudly hang in my office). I met him through his niece who was a good friend of mine (and she also an OSU student).

1995 Ohio State beat the crap out of Notre Dame at the 'shoe. I was part of the detail bringing the flag into the stadium. As we waited outside some drunk through a beer on my uniform. When we raised the flag I was moved by the fact the fans sang the National Anthem so loud I couldn't even here the band, despite only being about 20 feet from the bad.

1995 Eddie George gains like 300 yards against Illinois. Seemed like he gained 20-plus yards every carry that day. I believe that was the game that won him the Heisman.

1978 I watched Notre Dame shut out Navy in Cleveland something like 27-0. Joe Montana was the QB, but didn't do much of anything. Vegas Ferguson set the all-time ND single game rush record with close to 300 yards.

1984(maybe 83) Miami and Boston College.

One of those games where everyone says the last team to touch the ball will win. Miami, with Bernie Kosar at the helm, scores with 28 seconds remaining. Flutie moves the chains with a couple of short throws, and then uncorks the Hail Mary with 6 seconds remaining. Gerald Phelan catches the ball well after time expires. 45-41 Boston College

1989(maybe 88) Miami and Notre Dame
Miami recovers from a monumentally bad fumble call, and rallies to score a touchdown with seconds remaining. Down one point at 30-31 Jimmy Johnson opts to go for two, but is denied at the line. It was during these years I was a devout Miami fan because my best friends is a Die Hard Golden Domer.

oh and who can forget 1982 Stanford vs Cal?

"The Play" Stanford, led by some guy named Elway, scores with just 4 seconds remaining. They actually drove the length of the field in just over 30 seconds to "put the game away". Not so as on the ensuing kick off return Cal tosses the ball about like a hot potato. Five players, seven laterals, 57 yards, and a smashed trombone later Cal scored the winning touchdown. I am not actually positive it was a smashed trombone, but the Stanford band rushed the field prematurely, and one of them took a forearm shiv to the instrument as the last Bear, also the player who initially fielded the kick, bowled over him and into the endzone.

After this I got married, and things start get Hazy.
