Mount Rushmore: Musical "Baby"

Mount Rushmore: uses of the word "baby" in popular music

Four entries, please. Not one. No honorable mentions. Not your top 12. Four. Just in case this complicated concept is lost on you somehow.

I'M sure they don't belong on Rushmore, but without thinking about it ... sheriffs "when i'm with you", and TLCs "baby, baby, baby" immediately popped in my head.

This, this is a good one. Probably one where I could think about it and keep changing songs for a long time. But I'm going to go with four that pop into my head and stick with them because damn, I love these songs.

Baby I Love You - Aretha Franklin

Long Tall Sally - Little Richard

Night Time Is The Right Time - Ray Charles

And maybe not the best use of the word 'baby', but the best song (according to me) -- which just happens to have the word in the lyrics:

Superstition - Stevie Wonder

James Brown - I Got The Feelin'

Sly & the Family Stone - Babies Making Babies

Jackie Wilson - Baby Work Out

Circle Jerks - Jerks on 45 (for the 'Having My Baby' part, which never fails to get to me)

in honor of quik's last riddle with the surprise ending...

You Baby - Neil Diamond

I would also put

Salt N Pepa - Push it

Santa Baby - Eartha Kitt

I wouild possibly say Baby's in Black by the Beatles but Twist and Shout definitely a better choice.

really like the ronnettes- be my baby choice!

I think I have to make room for Frampton, at the expense of Vanilla Ice (saints be praised).

I think "Baby Come Back" is also strong.

Personally, I want to reward the prominence, importance, and memorability of the word more than just the song that happens to have it -- but the inherent subjectivity is part of the fun here.

if you do that, Quik then you totally win. Vanilla Ice ruined an otherwise perfect set.

Some collection of

Baby Got Back
Santa Baby
Twist and Shout
Push It
Baby I love your way
and Be My Baby

I also thought of Give it to me baby (Kool and the gang?) but who cares

I'll throw Baby I Need Your Loving by The Four Tops and Baby Love by The Supremes out there just to add them to the discussion.

Heh, came back to add Where Did Our Love Go, can't believe I didn't think of that when I thought of Baby Love.

As for Elvis, I like Bossa Nova Baby, but it's not nearly strong enough to be on the list.

Baby Love is really strong. Should definitely have considered that one. Another one to consider is Maybe I'm Amazed - Paul McCartney.

No one else thought of "Hit Me Baby One More Time" first?

OK, fine, I'll see myself out.

Another one just off my list was Sexual Healing by Marvin Gaye. 'Baby' features prominently in the lyrics.

It was the very first thing I thought of. After seeing the other selections made here I'm pretty ashamed of that fact.

I know, this is after the fact. But this one was pretty popular in its day.

Amy Grant - Baby, Baby

And another old soul song that hasn't been mentioned that I personally like:

Fred Hughes - Oo Wee Baby, I Love You
