Average age of team study
DC's trade block put a new question in my head.... What is the average age composition of a team in FOOL? Which team was the oldest, which was the youngest last season? Are hitters generally younger or pitchers? So my crack research staff did the research today to determine those very questions.
If you were asked, which team was the oldest.. you might instantly throw out the obvious answers.. a fading dynasty in Valdosta, a former challenging team at the end of their road in Rio Grande? What about the youngest teams? Perhaps a rebuilding club that is on the verge of dominance in Hartford? Or a team in complete re-construction in New Orleans? You would be correct with Rio Grande and only partial credit with Hartford, but you would be wrong on both Valdosta and New Orleans. We found that the youngest teams in the major leagues last season belonged to Colorado and Atlanta, the oldest were Columbus, Rio Grande, San Diego and Texas. We found Hartford and Chicago both took a page out of the same playbook as they sported two of the oldest pitching staffs in the majors last season, yet two of the youngest lineups in the league. Toronto took the opposite approach with one of the oldest lineups in FOOL, yet one of the youngest pitching staffs. Oldest 5 hitting: New Orleans 29.2 Rio Grande 29.0 Columbus 28.8 San Diego 28.1 Texas/Toronto 28.0 Oldest 5 pitching: Chicago 30.6 Columbus 30.5 Hartford 30.0 Texas 29.8 San Diego/Rio Grande 28.9 Youngest 5 hitting: Chicago/Colorado 26.4 Atlanta 27.0 Compton 27.2 Hartford 27.4 Youngest 5 pitching: Colorado 25.2 Atlanta 26.3 New York 27.0 Toronto 27.3 Brooklyn 27.9 That leaves only three teams that were average in age all around and not mentioned at all: Baltimore, Long Island and Valdosta |

Well we shaved a few good years off of that number, even if we trade no one. So that's good to know we're among the youngest. Good stuff.

In my case, the primary cause for the disparity is that I lucked into -- er, I mean skillfully acquired -- some very good young pitching talent, and I tried to buy a match for it on the offense in the FA market, where most of what was available was on the upper end of the age range.
With Wiley leaving, and a few youngsters getting a chance at the starting lineup, I think I'm likely to regress towards the mean in both categories this year. |

I would have guessed higher for both mine, but I guess I do have a bunch of young guys in big roles. Hopefully they come together soon.
