Anyone excited about the Phantom Menace at all? I imagine the original trilogy will do big dollars in a few years, but I guess I can't imagine any of the prequels doing much more than 20 or so million.

They'll do billions. All the geeks who complain about the editing will still go 3 times each, just so they have more to bitch about.

I don't care about the 3D, but I am looking forward to being able to see a Star Wars movie in the theater with my kids, even it if it is one of the prequels.

+1

I'm not exactly sure if I'll go. But the boys have seen the original trilogy a number of times. Eventually I have to start them on the prequels. Seeing it in the theater would be a ton of fun for them.

Upon seeing the commercial, one of my kids cracked, "They should have subtitled it 'A Whole New Dimension of Horror'."

Well I love Star Wars, and while I'm not a huge fan of the prequels, my boys (6 yrs and 9 yrs) enjoy them as well as the originals. We'll be going and seeing all of them in the theaters since they've never gotten to see any of them that way. I'm actually pretty excited just for the experience with them.

Unfortunately, if my daughter was a little older, I would still go.

Seriously, y'all fanboys (see anyone who thinks the way Mustang does above) need to get over yourselves. They're movies. If they upset you that much you should stop watching movies, like. Ever.

I've never understood the ridiculous hatred of the prequels. The originals are written just as badly, acted just as badly and have just as much stupid campy crap. The only difference is 2 decades between making them. I grew up during the ULTIMATE Star Wars explosion, I understand the hype over it but holy cow, they're just movies.

Ok. Now you're on my list too.. right after Jar Jar. :D

As for making my blood boil and pissing me off in a literal sense. No. I was joking.

It is my least favorite of the 6 by far. If any of the others were out in 3d, I'd make it a point to go because I like #2/#3.

I've seen these enough and own the Blu-Rays. 3-D is just a gimmick to me, no reason to go out and spend money just to see it in 3-D. Maybe if my kids want to see it on a screen bigger than what we just bought, but they're both really excited about the new TV so I don't think that's going to be a big deal...

I've watched the originals repeatedly over the last couple years with my boys, and I'll grant that there's some silly, campy stuff in there (hello stupid song in Jabba's palace). But both the writing and acting are still light years ahead of the prequels. The originals have plenty of flaws, they're not some thespian genius. But a lot of the acting is fantastic - Leia and Han are the main reason these movies took off, I think, they really hit those characters. And the writing generally stays out of the way, at least.

There's no reason to make death threats to anybody, but clearly plenty of people are disappointed by the quality of the prequels. Part of it was the fact that people hoped for something even better than the originals, and were let down. But even letting that go I can't say they are well made at all.

I grew up LOVING Star Wars and I was a bit disappointed by the prequels (Revenge of the Sith being the best of the prequels) and I still watch them from time to time. Are they great? No, not when compared to the first trilogy. I can see how a younger generation would like them more than my generation does though. Of course, they are the same generation that likes Twilight, so, for whatever that's worth.

I hate 3D, but, I'm seeing it this Saturday at Skywalker Ranch. If it was anywhere else, I wouldn't go see it, but, since it's at Skywalker, it kind of brings a unique aspect to seeing the movie, in my opinion.

...The originals are written just as badly...
no they're not. it's not even close. they use star wars to explain the monomyth/hero's journey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monomyth) in screenwriting 101.

it succeeds where the prequels fail. its foundation is rock solid. it's perfect in its simplicity. the prequels were a fucking mess structurally.

cameron gets it. that's why avatar made a fuckload of money. he didn't reinvent the wheel. he remade pocahantas with aliens.

which leads to my favorite lucas quote and also explains why he sucks. 'people don't care about story, they want a spectacle.'

Autumn

Yeah, for whatever flaws the originals had, the structure was good. The structure is what's a horrible mess in the prequels. No matter how corny Mark Hammill was, you cared about what happened to him.

Phantom Menace is like a video game - "Oh you need to get off the planet but don't have enough money? Take this side quest!"

According to box office mojo this is how the special editions did, first number is total money made and the second number is opening weekend:

Star Wars (Special Edition)
(Re-release) Fox $138,257,865 $35,906,661 1/31/97
8 The Empire Strikes Back (Special Edition)
(Re-release) Fox $67,597,694 $21,975,993 2/21/97
9 Return of the Jedi (Special Edition)
(Re-release) Fox $45,470,437 $16,293,531 3/14/97
____
I think the 3d movies will match what Return of the Jedi did as a re-release. I can't imagine it making more. We shall see.

$15+ (compared to '97 ticket prices) a ticket will definitely inflate the money made from the 3d movies...

Maybe my 20 million estimate is way too low. I could see the original trilogy re-releases putting up similar amounts(to the 97 re-release) when they release in 3d. Especially with the Blu Ray just coming out over Xmas, I just wonder who will get excited for The Phantom Menace(let alone the following 2).

saw it tonight. the 3D was rather "meh" to me - didn't really add anything at all (except to the price of my ticket). I would have thought Lucas would add things flying out of the screen, but as far as I could tell nothing was changed. I guess I shouldn't complain about that (#HanShotFirst)

when the kids are watching at home, I can entertain myself through the dumb parts, but at the theater my captive audience status was locked in. So I found myself passing the time by coming up with little head-scratchers from the movie. like...

when they are on Tattoine, who responded back to Naboo allowing Darth Maul to track them? especially since Amadalia / Padme is not on the ship when it happened

and when Padme returns, why does the fake Amadelia instruct Padme to clean R2? wouldn't she pick one of the other handmaidens to do the dirty work?

and how is that huge Gungan city hiding in that little tiny pond?

and if the Gungan city is so far away from the city that the Jedis had to take a ship through the core, how come it was really quick for the droid army to get to them on land and also for Naboo folks to go to the city (twice).

and if Watto was immune to the Jedi mind trick, why didn't Qui Gon just go find a pilot who could take him to Coruscant?

how come all large buildings in the galaxy need to have an extremely deep pit?

and how come ships and battle stations don't put their power cores behind some sort of shield or wall or something?

and mostly, how can George Lucas make breathtakingly realistic cities / worlds / landscapes and then give us a crowd in the podracer scene that pretty much looks (and sounds) like 12 people.

still nice to see it in theaters.

Luke was the whiny punk kid in the originals. Anakin was the same for the prequels. If I had to sit and watch either one, give me Luke.

Chewbacca vs. Jar Jar. The end.

Padmé and Anakin vs. Luke, Han and Leia. Even Stephine Meyer thought the romance in the prequels was bad.

Another issue is that Vader is the almighty big bad in the originals and the prequels just seemed to string together villains to fill that role while never really filling it.

No one responded back. The message was picked up by the ship and Darth Maul was able to figure out who received it and where. Someone in the movie mentions that whoever sent the message has the ability to find out who received it. I'm thinking it was Qui-Gon, but, it may have been someone else, but, it is explained.

and when Padme returns, why does the fake Amadelia instruct Padme to clean R2? wouldn't she pick one of the other handmaidens to do the dirty work? They don't do the decoy thing half assed on Naboo.

and how is that huge Gungan city hiding in that little tiny pond?
The whole core of the planet is water. The 'pond' could be one of the many ways to get to Gungan City.

and if the Gungan city is so far away from the city that the Jedis had to take a ship through the core, how come it was really quick for the droid army to get to them on land and also for Naboo folks to go to the city (twice). Time dilation to move the story along. It would be boring if you saw them traveling. It's just like in Empire Strikes Back. How did Luke get all that training in, while on Cloud City it looks like Han and company arrived in the evening, Chewie finds C-3PO the next morning, had dinner with Vader, tortured that night, getting frozen the next morning and then Luke showing up in the afternoon.

and if Watto was immune to the Jedi mind trick, why didn't Qui Gon just go find a pilot who could take him to Coruscant? It wasn't in the script? Actually, just a plot device to get Anakin into the story.

how come all large buildings in the galaxy need to have an extremely deep pit? Well, in all fairness, we haven't seen the insides of all the tall buildings. ;)

and how come ships and battle stations don't put their power cores behind some sort of shield or wall or something? Because no one in the universe expects an attack from the inside. duh. :D

and mostly, how can George Lucas make breathtakingly realistic cities / worlds / landscapes and then give us a crowd in the podracer scene that pretty much looks (and sounds) like 12 people. Crappy sound system at the theater?

still nice to see it in theaters.

I saw it at Skywalker this past Saturday and the sound was amazing. Even the crowd during the pod racing scene didn't seem like it was just a couple of people clapping or cheering. It is Phantom Menace though, so, my expectations weren't set very high. Some of the 3D looked good and other times I couldn't even tell it was 3D. My date that I brought was really impressed it with it though.

I think the voice adds to the comic timing, although his little "kidnapping people in the basement" skits are just bad. His insights and analysis of the movie is just great though. He just points out all those things that are nagging problems that you can't put your finger on and you're like...hey! that's right!
