No Commissioner's awards? Just curious...

Sorry, there were commissioner awards, I just forgot to post them!

(I woke up at 3:30 am this morning to drive to the airport and back, so a little fuzzy today) :)

Off the top of my head (I don't have the game open now), I -think- these were the winners.. if not, please don't sue me. :)

Haha, that's okay, Alan. Sounds like a rough morning. I feel like I have had a month of those, lol.

Yeah, I was just worried maybe you thought no one paid attention to those, and that's why you didn't post them. I consider them as prestigious as the other awards.

Thanks!

what are commissioner awards again?

Chief Rum
05-12-2011, 06:38 PM
Alan will have the more specific definition, of course, but the Commissioner's awards, I believe, go to Alan's choice of the most valuable players in the league. Without looking closely at things, I would imagine Alan's choices are more representative of a true MVP, while the game chooses much more on numbers.

I forget if Alan automatically excludes the Tanaka and Prado winners from being eligible for the Commissioner's Award.

The Tanaka and prado award winners can also win the commissioner's award. The Tanaka award generally is given by the AI to the leagues best pure hitter according to the AI's measurement. The Prado award is likewise given to the pitcher who the AI feels was the best pure pitcher statistically (often heavily weighting wins over other pitching stats).

The Commissioner's award I try to give to the player that I felt was most valuable in helping their team compete for the postseason all around in their game (including hitting, pitching, fielding, base running, etc)

Toronto Marlboros: Signed LF J. Franco to a 7-year contract extension worth a total of $100,622,500.

This maybe the biggest contract I've ever given out. 14 million plus a year that seems to go on forever.

Franco just turned 30, so I'm sure the end of the contract won't be kind, but we can afford it right now, and he has been so good for us since joining the Marlies 4 years ago.

Still, that contract:banghead:

The draft pool is stocked with awesomely filled awesomeness!

One of the best I can recall.

Only thing missing is the HOF potential SP....but lots of #2 or 3 guys in the rotation.

I was gonna try to sign a type A guy today. Figured losing the 14th pick wouldn't be a big deal. After looking at the draft, i rescinded my offer. I'm gonna get a prospect I really like drafting that low. Great draft.

Question for those who sign minor league extensions every off season.
Why? Don't these guys automatically resign with you, or are they older guys to just fill up your minors?

I've almost never signed a minor league extension unless i see the guy as a big league talent who I'd lose for nothing after a few year in the system

I always keep my minor leagues stocked.
Usually the players I have in the minors have some major league skill in one regard, but seriously lacking in another. Rating boosts do happen, although not often, and if it doesn't cost me anything, maybe that 50con, 90power AAA RFer may get a boost and develop into a 70con 90pow ML player.

Sometimes I strike out in FA and end up with a 23 or 24 man roster. It's nice to be able to grab a player who can be a late inning defensive replacement and can play all 8 positions with 100 range, or is a 100sp 100st pinch runner or maybe kills left handed pitching in a PH role...anything is better then nothing and it is nice to have those opions at your finger tips.

Even if they don't get a rating boost, there is no harm in having a "winning atmosphe" in my system.
I have NO idea if having a winning culture helps develop prospects, but I find I have had very few busts (knock on wood) since I started filling my minor leagues. In fact, I have had more players exceed potentials then bust (In OOTP 11 anyways, not many exceeds in OOTPX, but no major busts either)

So basically i do it because they are free...and as long as they do not take playing time away from my prospects, there is no chance that it can hurt anything, with the upside of potential rating boosts and a possibility that the game recognizes that winning=happy player, and happy player=better player.

I sign minor league extensions so I don't lose them to minor league FA. After a certain amount of time (after 5 complete season's I believe) in the minors you still do lose guys to FA. You have no idea how many minor league FA's I have signed over the years that go on to be key players on good teams.

http://www.fool-x.net//fool/html/html/images/player_19327.png Evaristo Bedeschi Latest FOOL HOF Inductee
Wednesday, March 2nd, 2118: Evaristo Bedeschi was a happy-go-lucky hurler that didn't seem to take baseball too seriously. But Bedeschi was good enough to chalked up 295 victories. Much to the dismay of his managers, the gifted pitcher was fond of making esoteric and philosophical observations like, "People are too hung up on winning. I can get off on a really good helmet throw."

Whether he believed that or not, the baseball writers took his accomplishments on the mound seriously and voted him into the prestigious Front Office Offseason League Hall of Fame.

At his induction today Bedeschi told the press, "I played the game for fun. That didn't mean I wasn't giving it my all. I wouldn't be here today, if I hadn't given it my all."

Bedeschi compiled a fine ERA of 3.26 with 295 victories and 148 defeats and held opponents to a .254 batting average. All total he pitched in 668 games and struck out 3323 batters in 4058.2 innings.

The eccentric and irreverent pitcher closed out his speech in style: "Baseball's a very simple game. All you have to do is sit on your butt, spit tobacco and nod at the stupid things your manager says."

Little wonder that none of his managers were at the Hall of Fame today.

http://www.fool-x.net//fool/html/html/images/player_18864.png Hall of Fame Welcomes Guardado
Wednesday, March 2nd, 2118: All-time he played in 2736 games, batted .327 with 412 home runs, 3410 base hits, 1855 RBIs and 1832 runs scored -- stats great enough to be acclaimed a baseball immortal.

Héctor Guardado was officially inducted into the Front Office Offseason League Hall of Fame today.

At his Hall of Fame induction, the superstar left fielder told the audience the secret of his success: "I was born to be a ballplayer... I also practiced a lot. Sunup to sundown in the summertime my brothers and I would be on the ballfield. We did it every minute we could. Boy, I loved to play baseball. Still do, and still would, if I could. I always got a special kick on opening day, no matter how many you went through. I looked forward to it like a birthday party when you're a kid. You think something wonderful is going to happen."

One of his manager's summed up his career very well: "You saw him standing out there on the diamond and you knew you had a pretty darn good chance to win the baseball game."

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2118: When he was summoned into the game, José Hernández answered the call and usually sealed the victory. Now the ace relief specialist has been summoned by the members of the Baseball Writers Association. They have elected him to the Front Office Offseason League Hall of Fame. Hernández was inducted today and took his place among all of the diamond immortals.

In his induction ceremony speech he said, "It's really exciting to be here with all of the baseball greats. All these guys are my idols and heroes. It sure is a special feeling to be honored like this. It's not something you think about during your playing career. But I'm sure glad I got the phone call from the election committee. It was only in my last few seasons that I thought I might have a chance."

Hernández earned his way to the Hall of Fame with 528 career saves and fine 2.92 ERA. He made 915 relief appearances, posted 80 wins and 72 losses, struck out 1033 batters in 1031 innings and held other teams to a .243 batting average.

During his speech, he pointed to all of the gathered greats and joked, "I sure would hate to be called in to face these guys in the late innings. I might not be here today."

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2118: The Front Office Offseason League Hall of Fame honors those players who are the best at their position, those special individuals whose skills make them unforgettable in the eyes of baseball fans everywhere. Another such player was recognized today, as first baseman Ethan Garland was enshrined at his induction ceremony.

There was no mistaking the look of pride on Ethan Garland's face as he saw his statue for the first time and the plaque recounting the many accomplishments over his 3040-game career. Garland had a lifetime .335 batting average with 399 home runs. Baseball's newest Hall of Famer batted in 1740 runs and scored 1818 times.

Fans of all ages watched in appreciation as Garland blinked back tears. "I really don't know what to say during such an enormous moment," he managed to finally say, "because words cannot describe all the feelings and thoughts running through my head. The love and appreciation from all my fellow players and all of the fans out there has been overwhelming, but I would not be here today without the love and support of my family. My greatest thanks goes to them."

Just a note for those not keeping up with the OOTP12 release schedule. They have announced the release date as June 20th.

Keep in mind that this league is scheduled to move to OOTP12 as was previously announced. If you may have issues with that please send me a PM to let me know. Also if we have enough extra interest once we move to OOTP12, I would really like to move back to 16 teams to get rid of this unholy schedule that I've had to deal with for about 60 seasons (or however long it has been).

As for FOOL timeline, we always upgrade pretty soon after the release is available, and plan on doing so again this season. One slight change is due to time reasons, I chose not to participate in the beta this season. So I will not have any opportunity to test the game with the FOOL league file until it is actually released. So the normal pre-testing I do will have to occur after the 20th this time around. That may delay us a little bit in moving to ootp12 until I can make sure I won't have issues to my confidence. (We all know there will be bugs we uncover once we upgrade, but this is to make sure we don't have huge problems).

I also have my anniversary trip with my wife scheduled july 4th weekend, and another trip with the family two weeks later. So I assume I'll get the testing I want completed during some point in the month of July and will tentatively guess we'll upgrade somewhere either the weekend of July 16th or July 30th unless something else happens.

Keep in mind there are supposedly some huge changes this year with how OOTP leagues work on the back end. It will be stuff that you shouldn't likely notice in-game, but means I'll have to become familiar with it outside of the game.

If any of this changes, I'll be sure to let you all know.

Makes sense. My minors are usually around 40-50 players I would imagine. That's without extending guys after their 5 years are up. If you notice anyone in the coming years that gets a boost, point them out, it would be interesting to see

It's a little frustrating to see it released that late. From reading the OOTP boards, it's evident that iOOTP took alot of development time away from OOTP 12. That on it's own is fine, but sense they offered a preorder in January, 12 should have been priority #1.

I see it more in OOTP 11.
I have two guys Juan Aquino (http://www.fool-x.net//foolx/reports/html/players/player_10794.html) and Walker Byers (http://www.fool-x.net//foolx/reports/html/players/player_10302.html) that had minor increases.

Aquino went from 9con/6pow to 10/6 to 10/7 potentials
Byers went from 9/4 to 10/4.

SP Pedro Lugo (http://www.fool-x.net//fool/html/html/players/player_16043.html) of Hammersmith was drafted at 85/81/81 and is now 100/81/81

None of these are examples of a bubble player getting the boost needed to make the show, I don't notice the 'lesser' players as much.
I know I did have a 2bman get a boost from a 7 contact to an 8 contact, and with his heavy bias vs lefties he was able to make my team as a platoon player...but I forget his name as he only played a small role, and only for a season or two.

Lugo's the lead in my latest vanguard of strong starting pitching.

BTW, as Crimson Fox noted, I have pilfered a few minor league free agents in the past who became major contributors for me, although they were mostly of the kind that an AI team lets get away that no normal human-run squad would allow to leave their systems.

Best recdent one I can remember is former CF Angel Castillo, who was a star waiting for a spot to play. He was on my Hammersmith teams that ahd that good run about 15-20 seasons back, IIRC.

I follow a very similar extending style to Eric, whom I have gotten more and more used to seeing views the game very similarly to me in almost every way (sorta scary, heh).

REALLY excited to hear this. Just bought my preorder now. Really happy you're moving to 16 teams. and glad the schedule will be better for both you AND us. As a nicer schedule might resolve the big problems we have with pitcher resting especially postseason.

I really hope the AI improves with 12 overall, especially the pitching rotation bugs.

I know I've been a LITTLE vocal about it recently but when you add new teams is it at all possible for division switches? I would REALLY like to move to RL and use a DH. There were a couple of people that didn't care which they were in, a couple of people that loved DH and the rest seemed to hate DH/wanted to stay where they were.

Another thing about 16 teams. Have you thought of if you are going to make two leagues of 8 or 4 leagues of 4? Or other playoff changes based on the change? Anyway happy about league changes and stuff as they always jazz up the game a little.

Just a note for those not keeping up with the OOTP12 release schedule. They have announced the release date as June 20th.

I would like to go to 16 teams again, but its not certain yet. We would need to make sure we had enough active/dedicated coaches lined up ready to join in without losing anyone as well to do so. If we went to 16 teams again, we would likely go to the same format as we had before with 16 teams once upon a time. (The same way FOOL-X is set up with 16 teams now).

As for re-alignment, I do have a plan already ready for how I'm going to handle re-alignment requests. It has been 108 seasons since the last time we re-aligned in FOOL so it is probably about time to let owners have the options to switch leagues if at all possible. I'll explain more on that plan when we get closer to doing it though.

It's a little frustrating to see it released that late. From reading the OOTP boards, it's evident that iOOTP took alot of development time away from OOTP 12. That on it's own is fine, but sense they offered a preorder in January, 12 should have been priority #1.

I would tend to agree if you are not a beta tester, however, if you are a beta tester you know the reasoning behind it all.

My guess is...um...2 for 4 with a double.

I'm not so sure they even played as it is miserable up here in Mass. All week will be drizzly and chance of heavier showers. Awesome!

Cgould wins. No game tonight, it was called off. Last week I went 3 for 4 with a home run, and two triples. (Those on my facebook friend list already knew that though because of my teammates giving me a hard time for the old guy running around so much). :)

And so far I've not had a single error in the field *knock on wood*. I did have on play I should have made but didn't get to due to my fading range at 3B though.

It is really difficult to strike out in slow pitch softball. I actually think the last time I struck out might be over 10 seasons ago. Anyone on our team that strikes out has to buy the entire team a round of beers afterwards. (I can only join them after Wednesday night games at the pub though since I work on Monday nights currently.)

Yea, I knew I wasn't really making a bold statement. Being hard to strikeout in slow pitch is exactly the reason I made the "bold" claim. See I would have kept my life all but 10 years ago.
