View Full Version : 1976 season thread
I have exported and am looking forward to this season!! Good luck to all
Few things/questions stick out in my mind
CL
1. Can Toronto repeat and hold off other CL teams?
2. Can Texas surpass Valdosta and contend?
3. Does Baltimore have enough to Challange and will Chief and his Younger Firecrackers play the team that nobody has their eyes on and spoil someones fun?
4. Will the Highlanders come close to 75 in 76?
5. Will Cringers wife bring home food tonight?
RL
1. Does Chicago have enough to make it back again to the classic?
2. Will this be Columbus's year to make that push past second place?
3. Will Long Island remove the stigma of underachievers?
4. Will Hartford pull the Diaper up and finally stop the bed shitting?
5. Will Colorado continue last years re-emergance from the Chief's shadow?
My Predictions
I have only ever gotten 2 correct in 16 seasons (one in each league and none at the same time) so dont put any stock into this
1.Valdosta
2.Texas
3.Toronto
4.Baltimore
5. Atlanta
The 1-3 teams could switch places easily.
1. Chicago
2. Columbus
3. Hartford
4. Colorado
5. Long Island
I wouldnt be surprised to see any 5 of these teams right there in the end with each other. When I looked at em, they all have strong pitching. Colorado especially I can see them jumping over everyone with their talent still.
Like I said I cant pick crap,so this is just for fun :)

The move to Detroit was scuttled when Ramz took over Ann Arbor and he's moving them to San Diego to become the San Diego Fathers. Unless he comes up with a better name before deadline and changes what he told me.
And no, the game's records won't reflect the Detroit move at all. It'll be like it never happened.
Here are my predictions:
My predictions:
CL
1. Toronto
2. Texas
3. New York
4. Rio Grande
5. Valdosta
6. Baltimore
7. Atlanta
8. Brooklyn
RL
1. Hartford
2. Long Island
3. Chicago
4. Columbus
5. Colorado
6. Compton
7. San Diego (formerly Ann Arbor)
8. New Orleans
I just don't think my team is going to be able to do it. Not because we're bad, we're quite good. The real problem is, the rest of the league has simply caught up with us. I think we'll be competitive, but...there are just too many variables in the way of me being confident about us being able to pull off the repeat. That said, I made the right sorts of moves this year that at least leave this club in a position to be able to stay a contender, so..I'm not too worried about it.

I'm gonna try some stuff with the strategy settings. This year will be a test season for the Hood, I'll be happy with 500 ball & some growth w/my minor SP's. I was not able to get a ace-ish SP this past FA & that just sunk us b4 we set sail... still there is hope for a late 70's push if I can get just a bit better at the helm. We shall see. Good luck to all & I can't wait to read about it tomorrow.
File up & Peace out!
PS. I hope my Pen is up to the task, b/c my SP's are gonna need them.

The fathers??? Come on what kinda name is that??? lol so we are gonna have the brothers and the fathers in the same state????

The Fathers are a take on the Padres.
With their rivals, the Brothers up the road...it actually works. In fact, I've even created a jersey for their minor leaguers to wear that says "Los Papas" because well, we can always use more en espanol 'round here.

She should be home with it about the time the season is ready to start. We just haven't had any time to actually cook a meal this week.

The Fathers refers to priests.
The Brothers doesn't refer to "Actual" brothers, but Brothas would've been pejorative.
Since they are California rivals, it's perfect.

We won't start running the season until after 11pm eastern or so. So don't go worrying -- if you're doing that -- that somehow I'm gonna run the file at 10:01pm tonight. (sorry i'm on central time)
I still need to go home (I'm @ the coffee shop) and get something to eat and get settled.
I've sent in my export. I like my team. I was skeptical at first, but after going over the roster, I'm really proud at how I handled this season. Even if turns out that we don't manage to win it, it won't be for a lack of trying and we won't be down for long. We've made some pretty good moves and I like my talent. We could suffer from Boston Fever or something (the new term I'm coining for when a team fails to produce, despite all of the right pieces) but...I think my boys were taught better than that.
We shall see soon!

You're the best GM in the league. You won't down without a fight. I'm just gambling that, the rest of the league over there has finally caught up to you, more than it's reflective of some deficiency with your team.
For all I know, you'll win AGAIN and we'll all be flummoxed for how you're able to come back year and year out and dominate.

I don't know if I'm the best GM in the league, I've probably played more games of OOTP than anyone else in the league though over the last 8 years so I know all of the secret cheat codes. I realistically would like to win every year, I hate rebuilding projects, and even moreso hate teams that purposely tank to try to get better draft picks (not an issue in this league with a small league size, but in other online leagues)..
I just don't realistically see myself as a team that is the normal level of quality of a winning team is all. I have alot of youth on the team, and when you have alot of youth, you want them to be stud prospects which my guys aren't. My team is the Duct tape version of a major league ball club.

Ahhh I disagree. Your starting pitching is no duct tape my friend. 99% of the league im sure would gladly trade their starters for yours.
I dont see your team the way you describe them at all. There are plenty of ways to win and you have been the most consistant of us all. So if your calling your club not major league ready, what the heck are the rest of us like?
Alan T
09-19-2008, 09:09 PM
Well.. I'll be playing a SS that isn't really major league ready, a 2B who probably isn't yet, a catcher who is past his prime and really isn't major league quality anymore and platoons at two different outfield positions because none of them are really starter material.
Gonzales and Wilson are still top of the league quality all stars, and Barbosa on the back of my pitching staff should still be an all star. I think I can rely on Martinez in the pen as well unless he decides to have another fluke 5.14 ERA season like in 1973.. My other three starters are all questionable, as is the rest of my bullpen...
Also I'm trying a brand new strategy with my pitching staff to see how it will work as well as a variation of my normal lineup strategy, neither of which I have ever really tested... So I'm guessing that my results will leave more to be desired :)

A Land based turtle
Edit: Don't ask me how I know this.. but turtles by nature live in both water and land pretty often, wheras a terrapin is primarily always on land.
Edit Edit: Or maybe I have that backwards... I don't know I learned about turtles like 25 years ago... Anyways it is some kind of turtle!

It is a turtle. Dont know about what Alan was saying but it is a turtle. Only reason I know that is since I moved to Baltimore Last year, I have to hear all about Maryland Sports (college) and I made the mistake of asking that same exact question. Never put two and two together with Terps and Terrapin

I'm not being a very good job of being coherent tonight.. I think because it is late :)
Basically there are sea turtles, the huge ole turtles that swim around in the oceans and migrate around and such... Then there are terrapins which are land based turtles that still live in water, but usually more like freshwater streams or creeks or ponds or such instead, and spend more time on land and don't migrate.
I'm a computer guy though, not an animal guy, so I'm sure there are people who could explain it much better than I. :)

Had high hopes for Texas. I think their problem is, those kids left their bats at home after spring training. Have no idea what went on down there. And Valdosta -- as usual -- and Atlanta ended up being a lot stronger than I think the pundits realized.

Nah, it's a good team. Those bats just did NOT show up this year. And from a team with high expectations, it's clear what happens when your guys just DON'T show up. It's not a slight, that team was down in the dumps. It's been great work to get them up to where they are now. They're not far away, I still say.

87 wins, my personal best! I am happy...especially after being below .500 after two months. At least i made a run at it! I feel alot better about this team then my past run 3 seasons ago. I have a young young team that is only getting better!
I have a feeling no matter what I do though, Alan will be there to show me exactly who rules the roost!
Well damn. Way to go, Columbus! Chicago and I would like to welcome you to the first-time winners club. It seems repeating is harder than getting it to start with.

Based on the discussion I read here earlier, I changed from my previous ways of using start-highest-rested and set a strict rotation, tweaked to make sure my best pitchers faced who I thought would be the most challenging teams the most often.
Maybe I shouldn't have.
Or maybe they all just decided to suck after two straight years of being on fire.

I think I knew going into the season what my problem was going to be. I knew this year wasn't going to be a repeat year for us, I had hard decisions to make last year and I made them and fared WAY better than I should've, picking up Khu and a few other key pieces to the puzzle.
This will be Christian Larsen's last season with us and a few other veterans whose time has come to be jettisoned. I don't know if we'll try to make a run for next year, but...we've got enough of a core that I'm confident that we're not gonna ever return to the days of those OLD Chicago teams.
Our classic trip in '74 was so brief, I almost forget this team went back to back for RL titles.
Hell of a job by Columbus and Hartford is BACK! Knocking on the door to the title, too. Congrats to Valdosta. I joke about his death grip on the Continental League pennant, but to win six pennants is hard, to do it in the span of time he's done it, with the sort of competition we have here...is astounding.

What's cool about this league is, with the history and such alike, we'll be able to recall the dominance of Valdosta's run now -- they might not win another title for 40 years -- but, this era is unique and we have the Champions Row to look back and can cite those teams and the players.
It's a neat experiment. Mostly, I was just plugging how CRAZY Valdosta's outfield wall looks. (http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/showpost.php?p=1825449&postcount=18)
I also posted St. Louis' banners (http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/showpost.php?p=1820678&postcount=2) which will be housed at the FOOL Hall of Fame.

Yeah. After I made a banner once (and sometimes, uniforms, etc.) I just load up the file and alter it.
Easier that way and good for consistency. Some teams (Colorado, Valdosta) are just so frequent that it they started to make it necessary. ;)

Nah. I don't think it can work that way. That team was build for his strategy and his methodology. I think you can try it, but it won't work. I know a few years ago, I tried to mimic his offensive strategy. But it didn't work for my team and we were way under my expectations.
You just can't do it. You have to build a team that plays the way you wanna play or at least, build a team that will conform and play ahead of what the standard for the rest of the league is.
OOTP has matured to the point where there is enough grey area for you to say "well, he just didn't have a good year" rather than "his ratings were broke."
I think that's an excellent thing.

The last original Valdosta Peanut has announced his retirement.
Billy Stephens has chosen to retire at age 33 after 13 seasons with the Peanut. Unfortunately he wasn't on the big league team this year, it will still be sad to see him leave the league. OW! Maresuke Saito, who was awesome last year, completely fell apart this year. He started 5 games in that horrible month of June, and we lost every single one of them. He earned 4 of those losses, which put him at 1-9 with a 4.25 ERA. By the middle of July, he was at 1-11 with a 4.76.
NOT what you want from your #3 man.
