View Full Version : FOOL Waiting List

Young Drachma
08-10-2008, 12:50 AM
If you're a lurker who is interested in joining FOOL, want to know if we have openings, etc., then you'll want to post here. We have openings from time to time and we'll contact you as soon as we do. With your luck, if you post, we might have a team for you immediately.

We use OOTP9 in this league and there is indeed a new season each week. Feel free to ask questions, too. Someone will gladly answer them.

Welcome to FOOL!

New York is officially available to anyone that wants in. This GM is done for the moment. Will probably still follow things, but my desire is pretty depleted for the moment.

New York is taken. Compton, El Paso and Toronto are still available.

Hi! Brand new here, just registered an account for this league, but I've posted in the past on the OOTP forum using the same user name.

I've played a few OOTP8 leagues before my life got too hectic to keep a schedule up, but things have quieted down and I'm ready to enjoy some more online play. I really like the concept of this league, and would love to pick up a team.

If they are still free, my order of preference would be Toronto, then El Paso.

Thanks!

Welcome! I just wrote you a private message. Toronto is available for you. Also New York, Compton and El Paso are open too.

Welcome aboard!

Just played one season, so I'm still new to OOTP9. However, I've played OOTP6 plenty and have lots of experience with strategy games in general.

I have never played in a online league for very long because none have ever lasted too long. Hence, my experience with multi-player gaming is lacking... But I'm a fast learner and gifted with spock-like logic . I'm not afraid to ask questions and respond well to constuctive criticism. So, I play well with others

I'd like to play the NY team if still open, if not then any DH league team will do. Do you guys have any "NEW GM HINTS" section available? In solo play I take the season slowly and manage some games plus playoffs so, one season a week pace will be exciting and challenging for me. Which is why I was attracted to this league in the first place.

I eagerly await your reply either in this post, via my e-mail at magic_number@comcast.net or both.

P.S. I hate typing :banghead:

Welcome to the FOFC boards. Just making sure you notice that New York is not in the league with the DH. I wasn't sure based on your post if you noticed there is no DH for NY or not.

For New GM hints.. well I could type all day for that.. a quick summary would basically be as the seasons move very fast here, you don't have time to try out guys and tinker as the season moves on. Work a plan in your head for what type of team you want to build (Well rounded, one built on pitching and defense, one built on team speed, contact hitting and moving base runners, the Earl Weaver approach of the big inning or whatnot)... Once you know what type of team you want to build, start it by finding players in the 22-24 year old range that look like what you want. That would give you a 5 year plan timeframe to work with.

Then remember everything happens each season in one week.. So putting a young player in the majors too soon is something you can not undo. Make full usage of spring training as best as possible to see if guys are ready for a year in the majors. The only other thing I can suggest is in your 5 year plan, watch what other owners do to win and try to see what you can steal or borrow from their success.

-----

I did... but in hindsight after reading your reply (thanks, bty) I think it would be best for my FNG self to start off with a DH team, so as to help ward off the steep learning curve somewhat.

So:

My #1 choice would be the best available DH team. Thanks.

Young Drachma
08-28-2008, 04:31 PM
That would be Compton. But you can't move them, if you take them over. The next best team would be Texas. But that's a pretty steep fall. I've PM'd you the instructions for setting up the game, downloading the league file. Once you've updated and pick a team, I can get you setup in game. We're glad to have you!

Out of curiosity, why not? :)

Out of curiosity, why not? :)

Certain teams are cornerstones of the league and DC's rule on them is that they can not be moved. Out of the current available teams, I believe Compton and New York are teams that can't be moved. Any incoming owner takes the team with the agreement that they won't move them somewhere else.

Edit: Boston, Brooklyn and Colorado probably also would fall into that category as well, except the current owners didn't have that in place when they signed on so I suppose they are allowed to be moved if they want. I assume if anything happened to any of those three current owners though, the future owner wouldn't be allowed to move them.

Edit #2: Baltimore and Hartford have never moved either, but both changed their team name at some point.. Anyways its about certain teams not being able to be moved just like in MLB it would be really weird if the Yankees or Cubs were moved. I assume DC would let any future owner of a team know if a team can't be moved before signing on

Young Drachma
08-28-2008, 05:48 PM
The basic rule of thumb on moving teams is, in the beginning, we allowed it a lot, because things were new and people took over teams and could move them elsewhere. Just made sense.

But in a fast-sim league, the one thing that binds the eras together is continuity. Too many names changes will make our massive history that we'll have after a year seem a lot less cool, because we won't be able to tie together the legacies of teams.

Plus, it's just not as cool to have that much turnaround when people get on whims to move teams.

If a team has won a title, moving them is frowned upon. But for any of the owners who have been here since '64, they pretty much can do what they want and some already have (Valdosta originally played in Gary, for instance. Ann Arbor was in Worcester) but a new owner wouldn't have that ability for a decade or so.

Of the current teams, a new owner could move from the start, it'd include Texas, El Paso, Toronto. Columbus and Quad City would fall into that category too, were a new owner to take over. Conversely, you want to give your team a cool name AND/OR have a ton of success. Either of those things will pretty much ensure that the franchise will always be a permanent fixture in these parts.

kaosfere
08-28-2008, 05:51 PM
Makes perfect sense, and about what I figured. Just wasn't sure why some teams were fair game for moving and some weren't. Now I know!

Thanks, guys.

Ok, I've been a bit busy & I'm taking too long to figure out how to get the file into my OOTP9 game so I can Pick a team (Compton) & make some adjustments, etc.

I feel kinda silly but I'm just getting back into PC gaming, after having a great & healthy baby boy (will soon be 2) has made me a tad rusty

So can anyone tell me how to proceed? I've download the league file & jzip. but what do I do from there? I did not find help elsewhere & I'm not very savvy with pc's. What version are we on? The next export deadline is fri @ 2200? (8/29/08 @ 10 pm)?

Thanks again

Alan T
08-28-2008, 07:48 PM
I don't remember if the downloadable file comes packed with the FOOL.lg directory structure or not.

If it does, use your favorite unpacking tool (such as winzip) to unpack it into C:\My Documents\Out of the Park Developments\OOTP Baseball 9\saved_games

If it does not, you need to create a folder called FOOL.lg in
C:\My Documents\Out of the Park Developments\OOTP Baseball 9\saved_games

and then extract this file into that FOOL.lg folder.

Once you have the file extracted to the correct place, you open the OOTP9 program and choose to load that league. With the league open, you choose which owner you are (yours won't be listed there, so I guess pick someone that doesn't have a password.. no idea who).

Once you are in the game/league finally, go to Game -> Load Online League file and it will download an updated league file that is the most recent one for you.

Young Drachma
08-28-2008, 07:51 PM
Alan is right. You can actually wait until after the file tonight is up to update your game if you want, because you'll be in the file that's released tonight and will be able to pick Compton and set your lineups, etc., for the season that starts this weekend (deadline for export is 10pm eastern..)

magic_number

Cool. so, Ill wait until the new league file is created sometime tonight after 10 PM and give it a go. I'm sure Compton will be just fine, I played in some pretty rough neighborhoods myself.

Will there be a posting to announce when the new league file becomes available?

Thanks

I got the file up and all looks well. I won't be signing any free agents but I've got some extentions to work with. In reference to negotiating with free agents and signing extentions I have very little experience, and would appreciate any advice.

I have some quick questions.

1. What setting is fatigue set to, low, normal? I'm wondering how should I judge my pitcher endurance.

2. Where do I find the "run support" stat for pitchers?

3. Concerning this rule - $32 million cash maximum (to match the same amount as media money) - could someone please elaborate? I'm guessing it's a cash cap limiting how much you can carry over from year to year. In regards to media money and such I'm not sure if a non-commish could look up the game set-up to check out the details. Is there a post somewhere with these kind of details for our league?

4. Do minor league teams have their own ballparks or do they share among themselves. If they do have their own parks, which I believe is the
case, In time I would like to change their field dimensions and ballpark factors to match their parent team's stadium exactly. In RL not feasable but in the game I think it's doable. Is this an option available to GM's, I'm sure there may be additional expenses and other adjustments neccesary to the parks (such as a reduction in seating cap).

4a. In the same fashion, may I change the name of Compton's Major League ballpark to "Jackie Robinson Park". In addition, I hope I'm not pushing it here, but I would like to change my AAA team's name from the "Anglers" to the "Brotherhood" if it is at all possible.

Well I think that's enough for now. It's time for me to get to know my new team & make any appropriate changes.

Dark Cloud (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon?) - I have also enacted a fractal encryption code  for my teams password ... I'm not sure, if you do decide to make any of the above changes, whether or not this will hamper your ability do so. Will you need my password?

Look forward to playing, M#

I have some quick questions.

1. What setting is fatigue set to, low, normal? I'm wondering how should I judge my pitcher endurance.

It is set for modern day. a 5 man rotation is usually needed, you might be able to get by with a 4 man rotation. Likewise you need pitchers that have roughly 50+ endurance to consider them to start for you.

2. Where do I find the "run support" stat for pitchers?

Should be on their player card -> Pitching stats there should be a pull down box for I think expanded pitching stats 2 or something in there has it.

3. Concerning this rule - $32 million cash maximum (to match the same amount as media money) - could someone please elaborate? Everyone usually makes enough money to cover the salary cap every season. the cash maximum only goes into play when you release a guy years before his contract is over. It limits you to a total of 32million dollars max at the end of the year after salary has paid out. Thus you can't release a guy you own $60million to still in salary.

4. Do minor league teams have their own ballparks or do they share among themselves. If they do have their own parks, which I believe is the

They do have their own ballparks, most of which are set to the default amounts. It is not something GMs can edit, the commish has to edit it (if he allows)

4a. In the same fashion, may I change the name of Compton's Major League ballpark to "Jackie Robinson Park". In addition, I hope I'm not pushing it here, but I would like to change my AAA team's name from the "Anglers" to the "Brotherhood" if it is at all possible.

You can set the password to anything you want, it won't keep the commish from being able to do what he needs with the league commish password.

It's set to low

Alan is right. It's a Pitcher Stats 2

You can change your ballpark dimensions to what you want. And you can set your minor league to be the same park. I can do it, just tell me what you want.

4a. In the same fashion, may I change the name of Compton's Major League ballpark to "Jackie Robinson Park". In addition, I hope I'm not pushing it here, but I would like to change my AAA team's name from the "Anglers" to the "Brotherhood" if it is at all possible.

Hey Sam...It's a perfect time to join. I'm nobody important, but the desicion makers aren't online right now but I thought I'd reply just so you don't get the feeling that we are a dormant league. I'm not even sure which team is open right now, but I can direct you to some important info.

Don't let the lack of fancy league pages worry you...We focus on playing ball!!! We have the goods where it counts.

Friday night is sim night, the entire regular season will be run tonight starting at 10pm Est. A "1984 regular season" thread will be created soon and all the action will be going on in there. Usually we get 9 or 10 owners online during the sim in that thread catching live updates. If you have a date with a double jointed nynphomaniac and her siamese twin sister, don't cancel it cause we are not THAT fun, but if your plans tonight include sitting on the couch watching a movie I guarentee we can top that entertainment wise.

Any questions, fire away...

You owe me a new keyboard, you bastard.

Thanks for the welcome!

I'm trying to decide between the two teams available, just not sure which is the better situation for a new owner.

Look forward to getting to know everyone,

Sam

Well Chicago has only been raped by the AI for this offseason. Columbus has been under its control for a while now. Chicago was in the process of being rebuilt, and may be kinda close. Columbus will be a top down rebuild job more than likely. This ALL being said without having looked at either team. Who knows, Columbus may be loaded and beat Hartford this year. Or the sky might fall.

Oh yeah, Welcome!

I'm the Republic League Board of Directors rep, so you'll have to put up with me either way you go!

I'd be interested in whatever's left. I'm in a few slower paced leagues, and this one looks like it would keep my daily fix for OOTP satisfied. Let me know if there's an opening, and where to go from there!

We definitely should have a team for you, dacubz. I'll leave it to the commish (Alan T) to let you know what exactly is available, we have I think a vacancy and a team with an owner trying to keep it going until he is replaced.

"trying to keep it going" ??? Now there is the understatment of the year! Ramz busted his way into the playoffs in the two seasons that he was "trying to keep it going" :)

I was contacted by Alan, and will take whatever team is left after the other new GM chooses his. Looking forward to this one. What really sold me on this league was the season post for the 84 season. Instant gratification and alot of activity there.

Heh...and I wasn't even there! Or muns. We're usually two of the more "prolific" posters. ;)

I have now taken over the Columbus Crusaders. I should hopefully be in this week's file according to the commish.

Hey Alan, whatever happened to SamIAm? We still have a team opening don't we? Did he not respond to PMs?

He went out of town for his brother's wedding and said he would make his team decision last Monday. He never came back though, so I think it must have been one heck of a party.

Heh, you said it! Too bad, I was hoping we had another new owner coming.

I saw a guy on the OOTP "looking for a league (http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/board/ootp-9-online-leagues/166846-looking-league-join-post-thread-8.html)" thread looking for a league that sims an entire season in one day. Said he's been playing since OOTP 2, but that was his 1st ever post on the OOTP boards....That always makes me suspicious so I never responded( ya, it's in my nature...I have 'issues" )
Just in case someone wants to do some recruiting...

Hey all. Hope things are going well for everyone. I have about 5 games to go in this horrible basketball season, so if there is an opening near the end of feb id like to get back in if that would be alright.

I think muns has played well enough to graduate and be able to join the CL! :) Get him a team!

Why would he want to go to that inferior league? He should get a chance to knock off the champion, right?

Even inferior leagues will get lucky and take the title once in awhile. :) In all seriousness, congrats on your championship.
