I'm gonna get my bro an XM or Sirius receiver and one year subscription for Christmas. Which should I get? Is there a particular one I should buy? I was kinda looking at the Stilleto 2 (Sirius). Anyhow, he's a cop and travels a bit.

Depends on what his favorite sports are

Double check to see if the Sirius unit can receive live programming - I know the older units could not, you had to download programming from the internets first. XM portables can receive live programming - I own an Inno and love it.
As for which service, it depends on what your brother likes. Musically, it's a complete wash. Its the exclusive content which seperates the programming.
Sirius = NFL, NASCAR, Howard Stern, Notre Dame, etc.
XM = MLB, NHL, College Basketball and Football (ACC, Big 10, SEC, PAc 10, Big East), Opie and Anthony, etc.
Baseball made my decision an easy one.

But Sirius has the All-Elvis channel...or is that just me?

He's not too much into sports (doh I know). I think he'd enjoy Stern. Other than sports, is there that much difference in the two?

The music is probably about the same I would think, though Sirius has some specialty channels like the Stones and Elvis. I have Sirius and pretty much listen to both of Stern's channels(Stern and BBTLS), Radio 606, World Soccer daily and Hair Nation. The Raw Dog comedy channel has some good stuff on occasion as well. Overall fits all of my needs.

XM now has an all Zep channel.

Sirius. Stern, Bubba The Love Sponge (maybe, they don't have a contract signed after this month), Scott Ferrall, and all the little shows and specials on the Howard Stern channels are worth it.
Go to the websites to see any differences in programming I guess. Sirius is the only way to go for me.
As for Toddzilla's comment about the previous 'portables' for Sirius not being able to pick up live sat. radio, that changed with the first Stiletto last year. The Stiletto 2 is even better from what I read, 25% smaller then the last one, better case/finish, better antenna headphones, better WiFi ability, and along with the built in storage you can add up to 8GB of microSD storage. I wouldn't mind one for Christmas myself. :D

I prefer XM ( I have XM< my wife has sirius) but if he like Stern then it is a no brainer.

Opie and Anthony,etc.
They still over there? I know they have been canceled on most of their FM stations because they couldn't get ratings.
Though I checked out a few weeks ago what was on instead of them in Dallas now and I don't see how they expect the show that was on to get any better ratings.

I have Sirius but it may not matter soon. They are in merger talks that might combine the two. They are talking like it may happen soon.

It is now one of the longest attempted mergers in U.S. history I am guessing. It has been most of this year and nothing yet. If it doesn't happen I will be moving to Iceland finally. This government has taken longer to decide on this merger then it does to go to war. It is just plain dumb.

I do that every once in a while. It can be entertaining sometimes.

I have xm (for now), and my wife just bought a car with sirius. Not only is the sports thing a factor, but also the kind of music he listens to. For instance, it seems that sirius is all pop/rock, with a couple of other genres, whereas xm has at least 3 stations for each type of music.
Also, xm has quite a few channels that have commercials, and I don't think there are any on sirius.
The links above are each service's channel lineups.

Sirius has NO commercials on MUSIC channels at all. XM does which would piss me off if I had it since I am so used to no commercials now.
Sirius also has multiple stations for other types of music. There are multiple rap/hip/r&b channels, multiple country channels, even multiple classical music channels. You also have channels for each decade, which is usually the pop from that decade. Then rock is divided up into different eras and categories. So yes, overall more pop and rock in those very general categories, then others, but the other genres are taken care of fairly well IMO.

I don't know if I could survive without the Lucy channel on XM. I don't have a car anymore so I don't listen as much as I used to, but the hour a day I'm on 54 is worth the $14 a month.
edit: No commercials on any of the XM music channels I've heard.

Yes. and they have all kinds of specialty channels. The Who channel, Bruce Springstein channel, Elvis channel. There are 3 christmas music channels right now.
Korean news channel too for all you who speak Korean out there.
BTW, Shade 45 frightens me.

XM should kind of make that known. It came out a while ago that they started playing commercials on some of their music channels. I know Sirius for a while also promoted themselves as the 'Only Commercial Free Music on Radio' or something like that right after that came out about XM.

Sirius is the only one with 100% commercial free music channels.
XM has more commercial free music channels than Sirius.

XM is very very happy with O&A, so they'll have jobs right up until the meger is finalized and Mel shitcans them.
Plus, CT's radio partner in O&A's dump-guy and recap writer. Yay Jivin!

Oh and about the commercials, XM has atleast 4 FM stations on air.
The country station in Nashville comes to mind so you get their normal programming which is at times laughable.
I mean you are cruising around in [insert home state here] and ou here the local "ANYONE WITHIN THE SOUND OF MY VOICE CAN GET A GINO'S PIZZA DELIVERED IN 45MINUTES OR ITS FREE!!!" ad..
BTW we did call one of these one night for fun and talked to the manager to tell him you know wthats on XM worldwide. He didnt miss a beat, said "Give me your name and address next time you are in Nashville your meal is on me" i commented thats pretty cool, he said sure got 219 names o thee list none redeemed.

You sound like Howard (except that you don't stand to personally benefit bajillions of dollars from a merger, and aren't using airtime that I'm paying for to campaign for it)

Yeah, that war line came from him for sure. I listen too much perhaps. I am not fanatic but it is great radio and damn entertaining. Also one of the few places you even hear about the merger, since nobody else on Sirius really mentions it.

I flip channels when he goes on about the merger or politics (he was a rabid pro-war guy, what 2 years ago?).
But otherwise, he probably gets about 90% of my Sirius listening.

I have my own reason to be pro merger, I want Houston Astros games on Sirius, and Ferrall gets all reved up when he is able to jump in on hockey games. Even though I am not a big hockey fan, he is so into it it makes it more interesting to me.
