There has been at least one, maybe more, thread lately where people listed all their favorite teams. Many responses were pretty obvious, most often people from Detriot and Philly and New York it seemed, just rooting for all their hometown teams.
Lots are more curious though, what I want to know is how did you end up rooting for the teams you do?
I grew up in North Carolina, we had no pro teams until the Hornets came around, so I didn't get to go the local team route.
All my parents friends LOVED the Dallas Cowboys, and Dallas was good when I was a kid, Tom Landry, Danny White, Tony Dorsett, Tony Hill, Too Tall Jones, Randy White... good memories there :) So I ended up a Dallas fan, until the Panthers rolled into NC.
Magic Johnson was my idol as a kid, thus, a Lakers fan. I hate Larry Bird to this day :)
The best though, is how I ended up a Cubs fan in baseball. I was 7 years old in 1984. The Cubs won the pennant that year. That was the first year that we got WGN in North Carolina. We didn't yet get TBS for the Braves yet. I WAS TRICKED. I thought the Cubs were good :~( 20 years later I still love them.
So, what about everyone else? And really, do we have any Bengals fans who aren't from Ohio? Or Lions fans not from Detroit? Why?!

I threw darts at pennants.
That and Dale Murphy kicked ass in the 80's, and I liked to say Bruce Benedict.
My uncle worked for the Seattle Seahawks when they first joined the NFL. He used to bring me all kinds of Seahawks stuff when I was a kid (hats, jerseys, etc). Whenever a game was on, I'd always watch to see if I could see him on the sideline. After he left that job, I just kept watching the games and sadly I was forced to actually buy my Seahawks merchandise... :(
I sometimes think back and wonder if he was stealing all that stuff he'd give me or if it was just promotional stuff or what. I'll have to ask him next time I see him. LOL

Grew up in Wisconsin so, just a loyalty thing. My Dad rooted for the Wisconsin teams so.. I rooted for the Wisconsin teams.. (Badgers, Bucks, Packers, Brewers . . .) No Hockey team though so.. never followed hockey.

The Devils used to have a goalie named Alain Chevrier. He married my fathers cousin's daughter and guys like John McLain, Bruce Driver and Ken Danyeko were at the wedding. I got all their autographs and was hooked on hockey and the Devils ever since. That was in 1986 so I suffered through some rough years. Now I'm enjoying there success.

Growing up in Detroit means that you either are a fan of all Michigan teams or you are considered an outsider. It is sometimes hard to allow yourself to be a thirteen-year-old outsider so you kind of just go with the program. Besides they have the best Hockey team and some of the best College teams in the country so at least we have that going for us.

My home area of Seattle did not have an NFL or MLB team for the bulk of my youth, so I gravitated toward teams and players I liked. In baseball, that was the Cardinals (especially Lou Brock). In the NFL, that was the Minnesota Vikings because (a) I liked the name Vikings and their frigid field in Bloomington, (b) I liked their uniforms and helmets, and (c) I liked many of their players: Tarkenton, Chuck Foreman, the Purple People Eaters.

I am from Detroit, and I am a homer, but I have other teams I root for.
Aside from the Lions, I am a huge Jets fan. I have a buddy who likes them a lot, and I started getting hooked a few seasons ago.
My favoite NHL Team besides the Wings? The Canadians. I'm big into history and legacies, and the Canadians have been the best. It also helps they drafted my favorite college player in a quite awhile in Mike Komisarek.
As far as MLB, eh, Tigers are forever my team. I go to as many games as I can. I'd have to say though that my favorite team aside from the Tigers is the Braves. My dad worked with John Smoltz's sister for a long time, so when I was younger, I had a whole bunch of autographs and whatnot.
The NBA, it's just Pistons.
As for college, the Wolvernes through and through. However, the last few years I've become a huge Rutgers fan. Their football program has really been coming together the last few years, and should win 5-6 games this year.

Well...
- UCF.. Well I am an alum and an active contributor to the University and its Athletic Programs.
- Minnesota... The Twinkies, T-wolves, Vikings, & Wild... I am a MN native and lived there before moving down to St. Augustine first (Flagler College, where I starred as a role player/benchwarmer for the FC Basketball Team for 2 Years) and then Orlando (UCF) for college.
- & the Orlando Magic... I picked this up while living in the Orlando area for a few years.

I've always picked teams based on the players I like. I loved Dan Marino and his Dolphins. I loved Charles Barkley and whatever team he was on. Now I am trying to successfully switch allegiance to the Falcons, who I used to like during the Steve Bartkowski era.
I have always disliked the local teams, usually because the local fans ended up annoying me.
I'm from Michigan and therefore Michigan teams have always been my favorite. The Pistons, Lions, Red Wings, Tigers and Wolverines.
