View Full Version : OT - Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Lately, I have had a wisdom tooth become painful. (Painful enough that I have not been able to consentrate enough to work on my sim.) So I am thinking of getting them taken out.
The reason I have yet to do so is because I do not have any insurance to pay for it. But it looks like I'm going to have to just take a loan or something to get it done now, because it's starting to really get bad.
I was wondering from those out there that have had them taken out, how much it cost for it. Keeping in mind that I don't have insurance, do you know how much it cost before insurance? And how long did it take to recover?

If you find the right dentist you might be able to get them to allow for payments without interest. Scream poverty and they may be willing to work with you. This has been the case for myself on many occasions as well as for my 4 pets. The most recent dilemma was a $2000 vet bill for a double knee surgery on my dog and the vet allowed me to pay $500 up front and 3 payments over the next 6 months without interest.
I have never had my wisdom teeth removed but from what I hear it should cost around $200-300 per tooth. You may also only need 2 removed now while the other 2 could possible wait until the money is there.
Good luck with it.

i don't know about cost, but i took about a week to get back on my feet. Granted my were compounded and they took over 3 hours to get just 3 of them out(had to go back for the fourth). But i was all doped up for a week straight

I had mine out last summer. Can't tell you much about the cost of it, but I can tell you that it took me about a week to recover. The day and a half after the operation were hell, but I think I just had a bad reaction to the anesthesia they used. Once I was able to get up and function like a normal human being again I was more or less fine, the only problem was that my jaws were sore for about another week or so.
Never underestimate how long you can live without solid food.

I had mine out over Christmas break, all 4, 2 were in sideways. I also had an extra tooth removed from my gum. I think each was about 150 b4 insurance.
Strangely, it didn't hurt at all. I was eating pizza by the end of the night, and have felt no pain whatsoever. Whatever.

Finally something to talk about. I let my wizdom teeth grow in. It sucked. And now I'm biting the shit out of the inside of my cheek when I eat or talk.
I still wouldnt do it. Fuck that. God gave me this shit, and I plan on keeping them. I couldnt imagine why I would have teeth that are meant to be removed by unnatural means. Of course, I don't go to the doctor or the dentist EVER. I have perfect teeth, aside from a slight yellow stain. And I'm only sick when I drink too much. I can't help but think that you GET sick or FUCKED UP by going to hospitals or dentist's . And who knows what the fuck they do to your body, putting in tracking devices or even diseases that will sprout out of nowhere when triggered by something we consume or see on TV. Theres nothing in the world that could convince me otherwise.
Just think about it. You are given tons of shots as a child. And there are three tv's in even the most humble households. Why?
We decided to believe in the need for instant disinformation. Some would say the news is meant to serve us, but if that were true why are we given only a faint glimpse of free choice.
I choose to turn the fucking machine off before I burn my retinas with the images meant to taint my sleep cycle and menace my dreams. I can't think any god would be down with making me hate myself, but if I was to watch tv for a long enough I might think I was ugly or fat or even a big fucking nerd because I havent gone on a date for over a month.
But then again, someone here loves TV more than themselves. This is proven by the fact that 'they' watch the motherfucker more then they engage in the beneficial progression of there real lives.
So in short, go to the dentist. Remember thats a strangers hand in your mouth and those are tools you could use to carve up a fish.

I had all four wisdom teeth taken out plus four other teeth on the same day. Knocked me out and 45 minutes later I was 8 teeth less. They sent me home with major major pain killers. I took one the first night even though I didn't really need it. Didn't have to take any more after that. Hardly any pain and very easy to deal with. I was back to work the next day or day after I think. Other people have a much tougher time with the pain.
I cannot remember how much it cost though sorry it was a couple years ago. It cost at lot more for the follow up dental work than it did to have them removed. I'd say courier's $200-$300/tooth is a reasonable price. Check into oral surgeons as well as dentists. I had an oral surgeon do mine, and I'm glad I did. Definitely find someone who will put you out rather than stay awake for it. Talk to every oral surgeon and dentist in town explaining your situation, some are very willing to work with you. Maybe there's some clinic or program around that treats the poor or those with no insurance. And you may only need the one that's bothering you out, so it may not cost as much as you think.

EDIT: That was meant for Tobias. :)
I review several dental claims a day.
150-200 per extraction is about average, plus another 200 or so for general anesthesia.

Yeah, I was thinking of just having the one taken out and doing it one at a time. But I think I'd rather just have them all taken out at once.
If it ends up being cheap enough, though, I'll probably have the one taken out then save some money to do the other three at one time. But if it's a little too much for the one tooth, I'll just have them all done then take a loan out or work something out with the dentist/oral surgeon.

I had mine out recently and it was done by an oral surgeon, which I'd highly recommend. These things can sometimes go bad and you want someone who's done a ton of them. My guy was great. I too did not have insurance at the time and I'm trying to recall how much it was. I think it was around $900 for all four but it may have been a few hundred more. You probably should get all four out because I've been told if you don't all your teeth can start shifting around, which may not be a good thing. Good luck. It's not a fun thing, but if you get the right guy you're better off. This is one case where I really wouldn't go for cheap.

I had a molar (sp?) taken out about a year ago. My dentist sent me to an oral surgeon to have it done because of the reason you said. They have more experience with extraction, they have more tools, etc. etc. So I will end up going to an oral surgeon because I'm sure my dentist will just send me to an oral surgeon anyway. :)

On a more light hearted non disinforming manner, i have heard from reliable sources that there are dentists the government subsidizes that are 'non-profit' and very affordable. The only problem is you have to wait in a line for a good 4-6 hours just to get seen (theres no sign up and come back for an appointment).
I think it's something absurdly cheap like $15 a visit. I'm not certain that they cover something like the pulling of wizdom teeth, but I can't see why not. My sister went to one of these places. She said it wasnt as bad as she expected. Not much of a plug, but better then tapping into your funds when your funds are already tapped.

I need to have mine taken out, and I'm in a similar boat as you sabatoi... I actually just recently got insurance for my new job, but several months ago I was in severe agony so I got a consult..
I have 2 fully grown inin (but too far back, so I have the I bite down and it gets my lower gum problem like Tobias has) and then 2 partially impacted, and the total they quoted me was $900... So, if you have two Fully impacted it could be a bit more... The dentis I went to also had a company they went through for financing..

I had all four of mine pulled out while I was on the 'rents insurance, so I don't know what it cost. I didn't get knocked out, and it was just weird feeling someone twisting and pulling on your tooth with a pliers, with no pain. I was fine after a few hours when the gas and anesthetic wore off. This may seem obvious, but make sure you have someone else drive you home after the procedure. I had a little pain that night and the next day, but nothing too horrible. I was eating normally within a day or two. Of course, I don't think mine were impacted too much.

I had one taken out last year and it was $270 before insuarance. Dental insurance sucks ass anyway, mine covered 40%.
Anyway, I would imagine it would depend on whether they knock you out or not, and also, you will get a prescription for an antibiotic + a painkiller, do you have medical insurance that's going to cover those?
Also, my dentist offers a credit line for stuff like this if you need it, so you may want to look into that as well.
I'm sure everyone's experiences differ, but when I get the other 3 out(and they all need to come out), they're taking them all at once, they're knocking me out and I hope I don't wake up until the asshole who rips the teeth out of my mouth has died, hopefully a slow, painful death, then I'm going over to my girlfriend's house and she's pampering me for a week. Course, she's not aware of this yet but hopefully it's going to be awhile before I actually have to have this done. Needless to say, the one they took out without knocking me out, was NOT a good experience for me.

Also a small warning, I had mine taken out this past summer and yes there can not pleasant effects.. for example half of your tongue staying mostly numb for a few weeks... it slowly recovered to normal but boy did that suck.

My mom is a dental assistant. She pulls out teeth for a living. Whenever I got a nasty tooth, I just go downstairs and she yanks it out. ;)
Not really, but it is cool to know that as long as she's living I'll have free teeth checkups/fixes.

I was in the exact same situation you are in now (no insurance) when I had to get mine taken out. I had all four of them yanked for about $700.
Bear in mind, this was without being knocked out. I was given serious amounts of novacaine (sp?) but that's it. I seem to recall the bill would have been in the neighborhood of $1,200 had I been gassed.

I had 4 taken out while in the Marines. A little anesthesia was applied, but not to put me under. I stayed awake as the dentist used all means of prying, striking, and stabbing to remove the teeth. Pretty cool stuff...except I thought it a little unprofessional when he put his foot at the base of the chair for leverage...
Of course, then I got dry socket and it felt like someone was stabbing my jaw with a needle every 5 seconds for the next 3 days...but I guess that is uncommon.
Point is, go in the military and it's free. And getting screamed at is complimentary.

sabotai, there are probably many horror stories out there, but if you are lucky it won't be that bad. Fortunately, I believe my experience was about as good as it gets. Let me make these suggestions:
1. Get put out. My doctor told me that I was not really out cold and that if he were to ask me questions I would answer him, but all I remember is them sticking the needle in my arm and then waking up. Can't get any better than that. And it wasn't gas they gave me, but something they injected.
2. They probably will prescribe painkillers and antibiotics. Keep in mind these are not the same antibiotics you take for a bad cold. It is my understanding these are used to combat infection in the mouth, and will not get rid of that other infection for ya. :)
3. The symptoms I had were a lot of bleeding in the mouth which lasted for several days and my tongue was numb, but that wore off fairly quickly for me, lasted just a day or so. The worst thing was this nasty headache I had the first day which I believe was the result of the vicodin, which was the painkiller I used.
4. In a week or so you should pretty much be over it.
Keep in mind I am not a medical person and that this is just my understanding of what happened to me. Don't rely on my say so. If you have questions you should ask the oral surgeon. Just wanted to give you an idea of what to expect. Like any operation there will be horror stories, but I believe my experience is more the norm. Just try to get a good oral surgeon and don't skimp just to save a few hundred bucks; it won't be worth it.

I'd mention that to the dentist then. I don't remember what the antibiotic was, but I'm pretty sure there was a generic for it, the pain killer I got was Tylenol 3 w/ Codeine, which IIRC is pretty cheap. But mention the insurance issues to the dentist and make sure you're getting the cheapest reliable option, and make sure to get generic brand from the pharmacist.

Note to those in college or younger: GET YOUR WISDOM TEETH OUT WHILE YOU ARE STILL ON YOUR PARENTS' INSURANCE!!! Your recuperative powers are better at a young age, and you'll save $$$$ to boot!
I got mine out when I was 16. X-rays showed that they were coming in sideways, and my parents had already spent a boatload on straightening my teeth with braces. I got 'em out in a morning, and went out with my friends that night. I was playing basketball the very next day, and it didn't cost me a dime. :p
On the other hand, She Who Must Be Obeyed had to have hers out as an adult (impacted). She spent about a week in bed afterward, and her dental insurance didn't cover much of it, so she spent about a grand on it to boot. Double ouch!

I had mine taken out this fall. Without insurance it would have cost 900-1000 for 4 teeth and anethesia. All of my teeth were umpacted.
The doctor couldn't believe how big my teeth were, said they were bigger than a 6'5" 300lb football players(well I am 6'3", 240).
I decided to have all 4 done at one time to avoid any further problems. Whole thing took about 45 minutes, he ended up crushing 2 of the teeth and almost couldn't get them out.
I came out feeling really drunk, and tehy gave me good painkillers. When I got home the pain started to become so intense that I couldn't take it anymore. The painkillers weren't strong enough.
My wife drove me back to the office. By this time I was throwing up and they gave me about 15 shots of local and a new perscription for BIGTIME painkillers. I was taking those in addition to about 16 Ibuprophen pills a day. I was in bed for a few days following and 95% of the pain had gone away two weeks later. 100% by a month.
I would say if your going to do it at all have them all done together, it is going to suck, but at least it will only suck once.

Only problem I had was that I got a small infection. But the doctor was able to clear that up easily with a prescription and some water shooting needle thing.

A year ago I had a molar that had to come out because of an infection. It had broke in half under the gum line (strangly, I felt no pain) and caused an infection.
After he yanked it, I asked how much the antibiotic was and he found some there at the office. Gave me the whole prescription (about 20 of them) at once, for free.
When I do it, I'm going to be screaming poor. :)
Thanks for all the replies. Today when drinking a cup of water, the water touched my wisdom tooth that's been hurting...and ouch...so, I would like to wait to get all 4 out, but I can only afford one right now, and this baby has to go.
After that, I'll probably try to save to get the other three done at once.

I have to share my wisdom teeth story.
I needed to get two of them removed, and went to the oral surgeon with my wife as the designated driver. Let me state that I hate going to the dentist as it is, plus I had heard numerous horror stories about wisdom tooth extraction from various friends and co-workers. So I'm certainly not thrilled about the process.
After waiting awhile, I finally get called in. I'm sitting in the chair, and the hygienest (or whatever she's called) was prepping things for the doctor to start, when all of a sudden from across the hall comes this god-awful shrieking from a woman. Seriously, it sounds like someone is hacking her apart with a butcher knife, and it goes on for like two minutes. High-pitched, pain/frightened shrieks: AHHHHH! AHHHHHH! OHHHHH-HO-HO! AHHHHHHHHHHH!
Well, needless to say, this was mildly disconcerting. I must have gone white as a sheet. The hygienest looked like a combination of freaked out and guilty, like she got caught being apart of some hideous torture chamber. She looks over at me and squeaks out something like, "Yours won't be that bad." Yeah, THANKS.
Then the doctor comes in, with sort of this annoyed smirk on his face. He explains that the woman had ignored his advice several times regarding an abscess, and it had become huge, and he'd had to lance it or something like that. Lovely.
So we finally get to me. Well, he zips me up with a bunch of novacaine, and then goes to work. The first tooth came out before I even knew it. Bingo, there it is. Okay, great. But the second one becomes problematical. "It's a stubborn one," says the doc. So he starts reefing on it pretty good. Keep in mind, I am feeling absolutely none of this in my mouth - no pain at all - other than being aware of what the guy is doing.
So then he PUTS HIS KNEE ON MY CHEST! To get leverage! And pow! Out comes the tooth, and blood goes shooting up in the air like it was shot out of a squirt gun. Again, I felt nothing, other than the pressure of what he was doing. Still, it was traumatic.
But I make it through all of that, and get to the end where he's explaining what I can and cannot do, eat, etc., and I pass out.
The end.

Mine was really quick and easy. I had all four taken out at once. They gave me an IV and the dentist and I started talking basketball. Next thing I know they're telling me that it's time to wake up. My mom was there to drive me home, and I kind of slept the rest of the day away, only taking motrin (not the Tylenol 3 that they had prescribed for me). The next day I was pretty much fine. It was quick and pretty much painless. Only problem was not being able to eat solid foods for a couple of days. I went through hamburger withdrawls...

I had all four taken out, and the upper pair were abscessed. I had the local anesthesia done instead of the gas, as the gas can make you sick for a couple days. There were no problems through the bottom two, and the upper left one wasn't too bad either. Then the doc moves on to the upper right one. Well apparently the nurse had some bad aim that day or something, as the novacaine she had put into that area of my mouth had missed my wisdom tooth. So the dentist starts yanking on the tooth and I could feel EVERYTHING. He's pulling and pulling and pulling, and its not coming. I think I started crying because it hurt so bad, and I almost tore the arm off of the dentist's chair. Finally, after what seemed like an hour, but was almost certainly no more than a few minutes, the thing came out. What agony that was. But other than that everything went ok :)

sabotai,
Please give me an update as to how things are going for you. Ever since posting in this thread my teeth have been killing me. That was 3 1/2 weeks ago and it might be time to seek professional help. Did you see a dentist or an oral surgeon? How did it go? If not did the pain subside eventually? Were you doing anything that particularly helped ease the pain?
Right now I am popping about 10-14 Aspirin a day along with Anbesol and Ice Packs. It really doesn’t hurt to chew but otherwise I have throbbing pain in my cheek as if someone keeps punching me over and over. I also have what feels like a swollen gland in my neck but is most likely just an extension of the pain from the cheek. Headaches are very common at this point.
Help…I am in such pain…

Haven't done anything. No money.
But the pain did eventually go away. That is to say, it's not continuous. Every once in awhile, it'll hurt. During that week, I was taking about 12 Advil a day for the pain, but it did eventually stop hurting everyday. But not as bad as what you describe. Not nearly as bad...no headaches, no cheek pain. See someone, soon. :)
I'm currently just trying to save up some money to have them all done, but with my car doing something wrong every week (this week, it's not taking in any oil, so I have fresh oil sitting in the oil thing, but the oil light keeps coming on and it's not using it...for whatever reason...). So if my car keeps acting up, it might be time to replace that....
So basically, whole world coming apart, no money. :)

I had to get a tooth removed because it was in the way of a newer one that was coming in. And they had to do something to this abcess that got so bad that it had my whole cheek swolen. They used the gas and when I woke up it felt horrible. They had to put these sticthes that would dissolve after time in to help the new tooth grow in straight or something.
My throat was awful, like I had had a bad cold or something because of the gas. I had to keep gauze in my mouth for the entire day, it would not stop bleeding.

The horror stories are scaring the crap out of me. I haven't been to the dentist in over 15 years and not really looking forward to it at all.
As far as the whole world coming apart, tell me about it. In the past 2 weeks I have had a van repair for $2100, a hospital bill for $4700, new air conditioning for $1500 and to top things off a relative passed away and I needed to attend the funeral, which cost even more money for airfare and all. Life sucks really bad right now.

No insurance? I have crappy insurance and it wil pay for an extraction.
Don't listen to all these horror stories. I had seven pulled and was just on the shot. Getting the shot in the roof of the mouth was a bitch, but the extractions were not bad, other than sound. You will feel worlds better when your gums heal.

Sabotai,
I too had mine removed w/o insurance. It cost me back in '95 about $1500 out of pocket. I had all 4 removed, and three were impacted. I was knocked out (thankfully) for the procedure, and a many have admitted, I was out of action for about 4 days. It was also my intro to Vicodin, which is a whole 'nother story.
Tooth pain just isn't worth it. If it's to a point now where you are thinking about it, it's probably time to have it taken care of. I was way past that point for the wisdom teeth, and more recently the tooth next to my wisdom was giving me problems. At the dentist, they showed me a picture of that tooth, and it looked like Crater Lake! The entire middle was gone. I was amazed that it looked like that, I wasn't in total pain.
My wisdom teeth came out fine, perfectly straight. Only thing is they kept growing.
Now at 31, I have a problem with snagging my cheek between my wisdom teeth on one side when I'm eating or just closing my mouth.
I went to the dentist and he said my teeth were fine, but that I had extra skin on my cheek that I kept biting into that he could get rid of. He lasered off the excess skin on my cheek. Agony. 2 weeks of eating with my head tilted to one side so I wouldn't touch the sore part of my mouth. Finally it healed, and ... I started biting into a new piece of my cheek. Argh.
So after all that, I'm going to get my wisdom teeth taken out.

I went on a 3 day bender when i had my wisdom teeth pulled. And just so you know, not a wise decision on my part. At one point I ended up driving home drunk, high, and on vicodin. The dumbest goddamn thing I ever did. It was the 4th of July weekend, but that is besides the point. I was so lucky to make it home safely that day. Stupid wisdom teeth. If they were so damn smart they would have grown in correctly.

Finally went to the Dentist today and ended up having 1 wisdom tooth extracted. The pain was far less than what I had been dealing with over the past 3 weeks. The Dentist said that there was a 95% chance that the problem should be resolved and that we will know for certain in the next 24 to 48 hours. The problem with the tooth was that over 75% was chipped away and the raw nerve was resting up against the flesh of the check. Sounds nice doesn't it?!?

couriers,
I know the pain of an exposed nerve. Some years ago I had a chipped molar, and the nerve was exposed. So everytime air passed over it, or water touched it, I had intense pain. But it was nothing what it sounds like you went through. I'm glad it's over.

Thanks sabotai. I am hoping it's over for good. I'll know tomorrow when and if I wake up in pain or not. My fingers will be crossed until then.

Update:
I got my wisdom teeth taken out this morning. No horror story here. All went well.
I didn't get gassed, I got a needle put in me. One second, I'm sitting there, wide awake, waiting for something to happen. The next, I'm being helped off the chair by my mom and oral surgeon. Walking was...well, I didn't feel drunk but I was walking like I was.
My stomach is still..."eh". A little nausous, my jaw is sore, but otherwise, everything is fine. I just hope this taste of blood doesn't last too long. :)

Yeah, they are. This was the easiest dental visit I've had....will probably be the worst dental recovery, but that's to be expected. :)

My mom is scheduled to pull my wisdoms out in a month or two.
Oh joy.

Your mom's going to do it herself? Just tell her to get you a bottle of Jack and that way she can save on the cost of anasthesia...

I had my teeth whitened today. It looks great, but apparently one of the side effects is random blinding pain for about 24 hours. About every 15 to 20 minutes one of my teeth will decide to erupt in unfathomable agony.
But damn... these teeth are pearly white.
Glad to hear the extraction went well, Sabotai.
