First impression. Uh, holy CRAP. The sim speed is darn near Mogul-esque! I made a mistake and didn't send my manager on vacation, and had to manually go in the first time, but I'm guesssing that a season (including full HTML output and year-end save) is going to take less than 5 minutes.

Ah. With full reporting, it does take a bit longer. The season itself will definitely take less than 5 minutes. Timing reports right now...

(See lots of people coming to look...still running reports for the first time. I select everything, for a 16-team league with full 5-level minors. It is at 16 minutes and counting, and says it is 84% complete. I definitely won't want all the boxes and logs for my yearly reporting. For the next season, I'll check the time on just the ones I see myself actually using.)

Sorry for the delay there. WOOF Solevision was calling. I should have said it was a wrong number.
Definitely using full reports isn't feasible for SP, unless you play one season a night, then start up the reports before going to bed. I don't quite understand all it needs to do here, but it has been an hour and 20 minutes. I think it's doing each season's almanac. (It's now 2008.)

While we wait for the almanac. Here are the contents of off_field_injuries.txt. I presume we can just edit whatever we want into this.

WOOF Solevision just got me, too. I now officially hate JC Cox.
Meanwhile, I'm hitting a snag in getting any of the real databases to work, so I'm going to start my first test with fictional players, but I should be able to still see what type of players lead the league in triples and such.

Hmmm. My problem may have been the database after all. I'm trying another database now, and it seems to be importing correctly. So, I'll start a real player career test starting in 2005 in a few minutes if this continues to progress well.
Edited to add: It's importing very slowly because I'm using the option to have every guy from the past 100 plus years added into the game with their career stats which seems like it will be a great option to provide a real history for a current day league.

OK. Headed to bed right now. It's January 1st, 2009. We'll see how far it sims by the morning, with limited (like I'd really want to have) reporting turned on. I'll start the sim the moment I post this reply. It's set to run through 2209. It won't get that far, I'm sure. ;)

FWIW, it definitely seems to be the database that was the problem. Perhaps, I had a corrupted download (I was using the same one that the the guy doing the big blogs was using and I tried re-downloading several times.) I'm now using the Gambo database and it is humming along importing a ton of history. Already at 50% after 11 minutes which seems good for the tradeoff of all of that history.

Complete game universe with MLB and all minor leagues set up in under 30 minutes using the Gambo Database. No winter leagues or Asian leagues in this test. About 10-15 minutes of that time was letting the game use Facegen to create pictures for every single player. Just set up the Almanac to be somewhat selective in the number of HTML reports that are done. About to start simming seasons now (after putting my GM in vacation mode so the AI will run everything.)

Dola -
The History is working perfectly with the import option. Looking at the Phillies, I can quickly with a glance on one page see a history of who started for the majority of the year at each position. Looking at 1980, I can then click on Schmidt and pull up his record (with a fictional facegen pic) and see all of his current ratings (all 1's) as well as his career stats.
I now have stats of EVERY player who ever played on the Major League Level that I can quickly view the index. The 30 minute setup is definitely worth it for this. Now, to sim a few years and see if I see any odd trades/releases, etc.
I don't know if you want huge pics of the output of this in this thread, so I'm going to put Schmidt's example in the mini-dynasty thread that I was planning on starting.

After the weekend, I'll be doing some 6.5 conversions and simming ahead a bit. Glad the ghost player option is back, because 2006 created 1000 new players when importing. I'll really be digging into the conversion stats and more since that was a big issue last version.

An entire calendar year was just simmed in 10 minutes.
For the question about triples:
Rafael Furcal led the league in triples in 2005 with 16. He has a 63 in gap power, 94 speed, and 95 baserunning instincts.
Jose Reyes was 2nd with 14. He has 66 gap power, 100 speed, and 76 base running instincts.
Michael Tucker was 3rd with 12. He has 66 gap power, 68 speed, and 67 base running.
5 or 6 guys tied with 8.
The Leader Screen is really nicely organized and allows for easy viewing of leaders in a wide variety of categories. Manny led the league with 53 homers in 05. Pujols led the league with a .373 batting average.
The only stat that looks somewhat surprising is that Mussina had 29 wins for the Yankees with a 29-2 record and a 2.82 ERA.
I'm going to eventually set this to run all night when I go to bed in an hour or two.

Yeah, same hear. And not to sound like a whiner.....But, to be honest even though I am really liking the sound of this year's game, have been faithfully reading all the TRTR articles and was totally disappointed by last year if it turns out some people on the board were given given the preview code versions without even preordering I might just keep my money my pocket. I have no problem that they give more people a chance to test the game and to be honest they sound be doing an open beta for the last week or two after last year. The problem is the arbitrary slection of people.

Should these reviews of previews be posted?
The email that I received, said that I could post whatever I wanted wherever I wanted regarding the preview version, but if there was a serious problem to let the development team know. They apparently feel comfortable with their game and want us to post about it. Knowing that I and Skydog and whoever else have it here aren't censored in any way is only going to add to the validity of whatever we have to say. So far, I've been impressed with what I've seen. However, my almanac is also taking a very long time to populate. I think because of the many years of history that have to be converted.

I basically told Marc that I wasn;t going to lie that I wouldn't mind a trial version, and that I was someone (one among a lot) who didn't think much of OOTP2006. I havent pre-ordered yet either, but I'm someone who buys every text game no matter what. Of course, I also was a commish in an online league that ended last year so I probably had that going for me.
But it seems like you are upset because you weren't picked on something that was relatively at random but open to all? It wasn't like it was offered to everyone on the board. There were minimal requirements that were set and to be honest I was actually surprised I was selected. Pleased none the less however (No offense to Marc but I had been hoping for the Mega millions lotto as my lucky pick, but hey. :) 277 million dollars is a lot of cash)

BIG QUESTION: Is there a screen where I can see, say, every catcher in my organization? Ideally, a place where I can see star ratings, current and potential in con/pwr/eye, fielding ratings, handedness, and age. In a perfect world, I could use this screen to assign my catchers to the levels in the organization that I want them.

First impression from looking at the history is that dynasties do exist. Granted, this is only a 16-team league, but the repeat customers in the championship games are obvious. The sim is running on the other computer, so I'll copy and paste in the next post.

Good to see you are liking it Skydog, and agree about the speed, it's vastly improved from 2006. About the reports, as Markus said, there is no need of having them ON as the game itself has all the history and stats so it's not like in the past that we needed to build the almanac to watch the history. The html reports are only needed for online leagues now.
Btw MrBug, now that you have the game too, we can comment it by AIM, i hated to not to be able to openly talk with you before :)

I like what I've seen so far about the sim speed and the almanac. It's too early to make that sort of verdict. Markus just answered two key questions for me. I'm going to check out a couple of things, and be back to give more impressions...
You can create and save a custom view + filters in the roster screen to look exactly what you asked for:

Hmmmmm...
What am I to make of a 35-year-old catcher who is overall one-star, potential of 4 stars? Does that mean that he used to be good, and that maybe he can re-claim his old self if he gets lucky, or is this a quirk or bug?

It means he was once good, but at that age he is very very unlikely to get better again. In the development engine, actualy ratings drop first, and the talent follows when the hitter ages. Sometimes this results in situations you describe.
I'm toying with the thought to adjust this, so if the player > 30 years, and his talent is bigger than his actual rating, just set the talent to the actual rating when displayed.

OK. He used to be a stud. He actually hit 41 homers at age 22, and had seven straight seasons of 33 or more homers.
One thing I don't like: draft position is no longer near the top of the "SION" player card (which mirrors the HTML player cards from 6.x). I have to go to the bottom of that card to see when a guy was drafted.

ARGUMENT FOR LEAVING IT: When taking over a new team, or looking at team that's not mine, it's kind of cool to have a very quick way to see who used to be good.
ARGUMENT FOR TAKING IT OUT: It is contrary to what we're used to seeing in text sims. If you're going to create a new word processor, you use Ctrl-B for boldface, Ctrl-I for italics, and Ctrl-U for underlining. You don't want to force people to learn a whole new system. (Tangent: This is one thing that doomed Empire Earth II. As important as hotkeys are to playing that game well, why in the WORLD did they change virtually EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM between EE1 and EE2.)

Notice the "ben batting ratings" down in the lower left. It was very easy to set up this view for exactly the ratings I want to see. I'd think this screen will be where I spend the majority of my time, and I like it so far.

Check the player pciture options in the game setup, you probably have set it to generate on creation and major league players only. Try setting it to "on demand".

Gotta run some errands, but the early verdict is that it is much easier to get around in than the last version. At least I'll be able to give this one a chance. Forgive my ignorance, but do we know how the "Personality" section of the ratings is supposed to work? Some, like Loyalty and Greed, are obvious. However, what about "Work Ethic", "Intelligence" and "Leader Ability." Have these been explained?

Work ethink & intelligence are used in the player development & aging code. A player with a high work ethic rating is more likely to develop faster and age slower and than one with a low work ethic rating. Intelligence is similar, though not used in aging, but rather when the player develops.
Leader ability... used in a weird formula to calculate team chemistry, which has a very small effect on team performance. (Switch off personality ratings if you don't like this ;))

Oh, I have NO problem with it. It's a positive, as far as I'm concerned. If I end up playing this game seriously, I'll certainly tinker around with stats anyway, but seeing a 100-SB season at default settings takes me back to the good ol' days that I prefer to model anyway. I especially need to do something about the CG record being only 8. Ugh. Carlton did 8 or more 17 times in a row. Perry finished 10 in the NL at age 40. Buncha young wimps today. ;)

Building all the history pages takes a LOT of time. So I suggest unchecking this. In reality, this is only needed for online leagues once a season I guess, so you can let it run over night. When playing the game and browsing the history, those pages are generated on the fly :)
Yeah, the history is what is taking forever for me. I let the game go as long as it could last night and I'm only up to 2013 and it is the history pages that are slowing it down each time.

I kind of like it this way to see how good a player used to be. One way you could look at it, would be to have the second Star rating listed as Peak rating instead of potential and maybe throw in an arrow to show if he is progressing or declining.
This way we could see what prospects could become and also what Veterans once were....or if they lived up to their peak potential ever.
Just a thought.

Just stopped my sim because of the first head scratcher trade that I've noticed:
The Padres (who were running a bit low on money so that might be a factor) traded a 32 year old Ryan Howard (he went there as a FA a year prior) who had hit 50 plus homers each of the last 6 years and was on pace for another 50 homer season, a weak MR, a good prospect at 3B, and a poor prospect at 1B, AND 3 million dollars for Brad Penny. Penny is 35, his ratings are in decline (still good - Stuff is 51, movement of 55, and Control of 74,) but he has always been a .500 pitcher in this career. Seems like they gave up a heavy price for an older pitcher and SD doesn't have a 1B in the wings to produce Howard's type of numbers.
Hmmm.. maybe a never mind. I decided to finish out the season before I posted. Brad Penny went 12-6 for the Padres the rest of the way. Their prospect (who replaced Howard at 1B) who didn't look that good to me (I have scouts off) hit .252 with 12 homers and 47 RBI's the rest of the year and most importantly they won 100 games and made the playoffs.

The following year, Brad Penny was an important pitcher that went 15-9 for a World Championship Padres team that went 103-59 overall. That prospect that I thought looked poor hit .313-31-107.

I started a sim last night at about 11PM and opened it up at about 7:30 my time. The league was in 2054. (I started at 2007)
Not a bad clip IMHO.
Just make sure you turn off all reporting and picture gens and it flies at a pretty good clip. (I actually had some almanac functions on, I"m going to try another run today with none of those on)
I noticed a couple of troublesome things, but I need to run again because I stupidly deleted the test league. (yes, I'm an idiot)
The career HR leader hit 853. He was a monster, who won 6 MVP awards and slugged over 40 HR 10 consecutive years. (career high was 58)
As a 25 year old, with 2x 40HR seasons already under his belt, he was shipped, along with 3 million dollars for a 31 year old SP. The pitcher was solid, but we aren't talking Pedro Martinez or Greg Maddux solid. If I had to use real a real world example it'd be like if the Cardinals traded King Albert for Bronson Arroyo.
Even in your example above, Eaglesfan27, there is no way a guy who hit 50HR for six straight years gets dealt for a 35 year old pitcher. I don't care how Penny finished the year out. This isn't like the Tigers trading an unproven Smoltz for an aging Alexander. This is a proven MVP candidate being shipped for an aging third starter.
Still, this is very much an improved game. The waivers work better, the player development seems to be solid and it flies when you set it up right.
I need to run a 75 to 100 year test league and sift through the stuff so I can get examples for Markus and post them to the correct forum.
It's early. . . but as of now, this went from a "maybe" to an "automatic" purchase. I have four days to change my mind. :)

Remember that this player could have been very mad and demanded a trade. This happens sometimes. I mean, the Red Sox tried to ship Ramirez (a future HoF member still in his prime) more than once :)

Another thing, trading is still being tweaked. In the beta, SP were a bit undervalued, and the preview build has a tweak included. Maybe that went too far so that SP are a bit overvalued now. Let's keep an eye on that :)

I'm using the same setup. A real life MLB league with full minors and I'm also very impressed with the speed. With the current clip and the almanac features off, I figure I will get through at least 100 years today and will examine stats this evening.
I also agree with the trade still being questionable. I actually looked to see if Howard was demanding a trade, and I didn't see that in the news item (I do see it with plenty of other players) but maybe he was mad at the time and not quite to that point. Shrug. So far, it is the only head scratcher I've seen and I've frequently been stopping to look at trades. I'm now going to go play the 360 for a few hours and just let this run.

You really won't need the almanac. All the history is generated on the fly, no matter if the almanac is enabled or not.
All the almanac does is archive a complete set of reports/history generated at game day X.

My concern here would be if any changes could possibly mess with the way the AI values players.

I don't have the preview copy, but from looking at those trades SP may be a bit overvalued, but a bigger issue may be the age of the SP isn't being considered strongly enough.

The trade AI is very complex. It doesn't simply compare players. It evaluates the entire roster, including the minor league system, in several different ways before and after a potential trade, and then weighting the results. And it does not make any trades just for the sake of making a trade, so in some way they always make sense. :)

Sort of off topic. I used to be heavy into baseball mogul in middle and high school, because I followed the game of baseball very closely and knew every player, prospect, etc...Since Ive been in college I haven't really followed baseball at all and part of my enjoyment of sports sims is knowing the universe. I may give this game a try but does anyone know a website or something with a 2007 season preview that can get me up to speed on rosters, top prospects,etc...Thanks

Is there a button you can hit so that the first year stats end up correct, or is this like the previous versions where you have to sim 1901, get the correct imports after the rollover to 1902, stat over and plug the numbers in?

I assume you are using historical players with Lahman (or another DB) rather than fictional?
It still takes a season for the auto adjust league totals to have something to work with but for the most part the initial year of a league seems much better. For example, I just completed a sim from 1901-2006 and here are my 1901 numbers:

HOME RUNS (NL) 219 227

A little high but not too far off the mark. There is an issue with stolen bases being quite a bit too high from 1901-1910 and triples need some work but other stats seem pretty close. Here are my 1901 leaders

Actually I'm doing fictional. Just trying to run a test with fictional players to see how the game will adjust totals as the years go on. It would seem to make sense to me to add a "recal" button for league totals after the creation year has been typed in. This can really mess up your leaderboards.

Ah. Sorry, I am not as familiar with the fictional side of things. You may need to adjust the player creation modifiers for the first season of a fictional league to get decent 1901 numbers. However, I believe there are some options to create players with other era style ratings. On the league setup screen from the strategy tab did you check auto import historical player creation modifiers and auto adjust league totals each season for historical accuracy.
Those two options should help fictional players perform similiar to deadball era baseball when you are in the 1901-20 seasons of your fictional league. I am not sure but it still may take a year or two for the stats to smooth out though.

To create a fictional league with stats that will somewhat closely resemble the deadball era do the following when creating your league.
You can use the League Creation Wizard to select your league structure and get all the basics set up but when you get to step 7 make sure you change the starting year of your league to 1901 (or whatever season you want). Once you have done that and selected a name for your saved game I would suggest clicking on Advanced Mode rather than Start Game.
You are now in the Advanced Mode. Select the options tab and check to enable the option to automatically adjust league totals afer each season for historical accuracy.
You may also want to enable import adjusted financial settings after each year if you want realistic contracts and revenue for the period.
Next click on the Strategy & Equivalencies tab:
Make sure you check to enable both of the Historical Modifier & Totals Options:
Automatically adjust league totals modifiers after each season for historical accuracy
and
Automatically import historical player-creation modifiers
I would also suggest changing your General strategy tendancies to the following
Use of Relievers - Very Rarely
Use of Closers - Very Rarely
Pitcher Endurance - High
Typical Starting Rotation size - 4 man rotation
Pinch hit for pitchers - very rarely
the other settings are up to you.
You are now ready to start your game. I set up my league with a 140 game schedule just like real life 1901 had.
Here are my league totals and leaderboards: (two 8 team leagues with one division each same as 1901 AL and NL had)
League one batting average was .280 with 108 homers hit and 980 stolen bases
League two batting average was .280 with 98 homers hit and 774 stolen bases
STAT LEADERS
I left the names out since they are all fictional players
BATTING AVG

.362
.352
Homeruns

It certainly does not match 1901 historical stats perfectly but for a fictional league I think it gives you the feel of the deadball era. I believe from there on it will automatically adjust the settings to mirror whatever year you are playing.
Hope that helps.

I'm posting the "cards" of multiple league leaders in the dynasty thread (I don't want to clutter this thread.) Looking over things from just an eyeball test at this point, I'm enjoying seeing variability in how guys end their career. I see some players who hung on until the bitter end. Others who retired as soon as they started losing it. With injuries on average (and everything else at default), my career Home Run Leader has 941 homers. The next closest guys had 832 and 769.
Feel free to let me know if there is any particular statistical leaders you want me to take a closer look at. I'm enjoying just looking through so much history. Also, at least among the best players, I'm seeing very few suspicious releases or trades. Tomorrow, I'm going to play through a season or several much slower and look much closer for any odd releases.

I think I made one big mistake (well two) in my first test league that is hurting the success of some teams. I didn't use the button that assigns fictional contracts to all of the players (and I don't think the database that I used has real player salaries.) Two, I didn't use the button that sets team budgets to be balanced for their current payrolls. The default game setting doesn't seem to give New York a huge payroll and the Yankees have been hamstrung in my test league as a result. Same for my Phillies (to a lesser extent.) I'll use those options in my next test league (which I'll probably start tomorrow evening) and see if that makes a big difference.
Edit: Actually, I'll probably start that tonight before bed. I'll be able to compare to see if there is variability at the 50 year mark and take that hopefully more stable league further into the future. But, I'll keep my first test league around in case I want to continue it at some point or look at something else.

The game does that automatically after the inaugural draft, and bases the financial numbers on the payroll of the team. So you may up ending up with NY having a low budget, depending on how they draft.
If you want the game to resemble real life markets, you will need to edit the financial values of the teams after the draft, i.e. increase the market size of the Yankees. :)

Yeah, I just figured this out. Also, BOTH times I created test leagues, I forgot/missed scrolling down league rules to set average TV contracts, average ticket prices, max money a team can hoarde, etc. I think that is going to take care of the issues that I was seeing with the Yankees running out of money and sucking as a result.

If you already know what kind of league you like, I suggest setting the player creation modifiers while creating your game. For example, if you like 80's baseball, set your league up in the wizard as usual, then at the last step hit "advanced mode", then go to the league strategy tab, select "normal" for pitcher endurance, adjust the reliever/closer useage a bit down, and set the player creation modifier for homeruns to 0.80 and the one for contact to 0.95... voila, you got a nice 80's fictional league.

Some e-mail messages do not contain the player positions, and when I click on the link to the player, it is not readily apparent what his primary position is. It is buried on the left in the Personal Details section. I'd suggest one of two things here:
1. Put the Position in color, so that it stands out in the Personal Details.
2. Add it at the top. Instead of "#75 Charlie Parkinson", I'd go with "SP Charlie Parkinson." I mean, I don't really care what his number is, but I sure care what position he plays.

So are you dropping the number or keeping it and adding the position?

Not a big deal but I prefer number and position if it can be done. The number adds some to the immersion IMHO.

I'm running it on Vista, no problems. Sim season #45 last year for me took 7:20 seconds. I'm about to time sim season 107.

My second test league ran quite a bit faster. It's in 2064 as I wake up late this morning. Going to take a look at some stats now and see if the "big money teams" play more like big money teams with the adjustments I made to financials.
Yep, they did. Chicago with the big media market got together a powerhouse team and made it to 6 World Series in a row from 2030-35 (they won 3.) Yankess won quite a bit more too as did the Mets, and even my Phillies team. More big market teams won in general when I adjusted finances, but still a few smaller market teams snuck in wins in the last 60 years. Posting some stats in the dynasty thread (I'll use the same one for comparision purposes as the first test league.)

I started in 2007 with all defaults, a fictional MLB style league with full minors. The sim crashed at the end of the 2096 season. I'll run through to 2097 later and see if it's a fatal error or if it's just one of those things. Either way, 89 years isn't bad, is it?
If you have any questions about the stats, let me know. I'm going to start sifting through the history now and see what it tells me.
Early impressions:
Career leaders - Avg - .345, HR - 730, RBI - 2,139, SB - 997, H - 3,225, W- 300, Saves - 646, K - 4,305
Single Season - Avg - .421, HR - 65, RBI - 180, SB - 99, H - 257, W - 24, Saves - 54, K - 345

The first player I looked at is fascinating. The guy with 300 wins and 4,305K is the same player. His name is Chris "Fearless" Carrol.
He was the 21 pick in the draft in June of 2016. He started out as a reliever in the minors. He wasn't really good in A ball, but was promoted to AA at the start of 2017. He pitched well there and moved up to AAA. He lit up AAA and was promoted to the majors.
He worked as a reliever during for the rest of that year and the start of the next year. He had 26 saves and seemed to be destined to be a world class reliever until mid August when the team decided they wanted him to start. He started 8 games to finish the year. The following season, he pitches in 22 games, all starts, and racks up a 12-3 record, with a 1.15 ERA, 23 BB and 183 K. He tears his labrum and is gone for 7 months after that fantastic start. He's 22 at this point.
He comes back the next year and has a terrific year, going 15-7 with a 1.98 ERA, 46 BB and 289 K. The following year he herniates a disk 6 innings into the season and misses the rest of the year.
Then starts the legendary run. 8 Cy Young awards in 9 seasons. His high ERA during the stretch is 2.22. His low ERA was 1.38, a season in which he went 21-4 with 30BB, 303K and 144 hits given up in 234 innings. Yikes.
He starts to fade a bit at the end and spends the last year of his career as a middle reliever before retiring.
His final numbers = 300-130, 28 saves, 2.45 ERA, 3,901.2 IP, 2,944 H, 755 BB, 4,305K, 10 complete games (?), 7 shutouts (?), and a .95 WHIP
He spends his entire career with the same team, signing extensions most of the time. The most lucrative was a 3 year, 74 million dollar extension.

Troy, that sounds like a number of HOF pitchers I have seen when I play in the Golden Age except that CG and SHO would be much, much higher. The Golden Age is very pitcher-centric but the use of relievers is nowhere near the later eras. I can only imagine that the current/modern trend of more reliever specialists would only intensify to where CG would be a thing of the past. It alos sounds like that it's an era of really good hitters with a few HOF pitchers, explaining the low SHO?

In my test career (with modern settings that has pitcher endurance as low and reliever use set to very high) I have one pitcher who is getting 5-8 CG's each year. Of course, he is one of the most dominant pitchers so managers are leaving him in to finish games.

That could be. I'd probably tweak the era settings to be in the late 80's era so I have a bit more complete games, but the relievers are still heavily used.
Looking through this, color me impressed. I'm going to put some "slow" time in tonight and tomorrow before my game goes bye bye, but this is pretty darned fun right now.

One thing that I would consider adding (maybe it is there and I missed it) is the ability to set individual team's media revenue. I've got financials to where I'm much happier with them by raising the "average media revenue" and the bigger market teams are doing well because of it, but it also has given smaller market teams a bit too much money. Still, I'm enjoying this test career much more and it is better than teams going broke. So far, I'm very impressed with everything I've seen and this has gone from a "wait and see" to a definite buy for me.

Take this with a grain of salt since all I know is from reading the posts here.
Whenever I play my historical career in OOTP5, I have one significant house rule: I use a self-imposed salary cap while I make sure the AI does not (i.e., they have plenty of money). I was reminded of this from EF27's post about smaller markets having too much money. Is the AI such that even if you have smaller market teams, you will not necessarily dominate them? Or does having such teams around provide more realism while not making the game more competitive?

How you liking the AI handling waivers and release so far?
So far the waivers and release looks a ton better. I haven't seen a lot of goofy moves by the AI at this point. (I haven't dug deep into it yet)
As for the draft picks, the MVP of the AL in 2095 was a 15th round pick. The Cy Young winner was a 13th round pick and the rookie of the year was the first player taken in the draft a couple of years previous.
The draft history is ridiculously deep. You can review every player picked in every draft. It so happens the first player I randomly clicked on, the 24th pick in the first round in 2054, never made the majors and it wasn't due to injury. He just never developed and retired after 6 years in the minors. I looked at a few players who did develop and then I clicked on a guy who was the 8th pick in the 2040 draft. A pitcher who also never made it. (well, he did make it to the show for a cup of coffee. Three games worth, but he ended up 15-38 at AAA and was out of baseball after 8 years. Again, no injury that caused it, he just sucked.
Last guy I clicked on was a catcher picked #5 overall. He started professional ball at 20. Got up for some cups of coffee at 23 and 24. Ended up as a starter at age 27. Full time starter for 2 years (very average years). He ended his career with 388 games and a 256 AVG, .292 OBP and was out of baseball by his 10th year, with only 3 of those years spent fully in the majors.
Seems to be ok to me.

Markus,
Is there any chance that the player history can be grouped into some sort of bolded heading categories, such as 'Transactions', 'Ratings', 'Injury', 'Awards' etc.? With a player who has played a long time, like in SD's example a page or two back (Post #78), it becomes extremely difficult to sort through a hundred lines of mixed information in the player history.

And lastly, I'll just chime in that I've always felt the four main attributes for a pitcher, namely "stuff", "control", "movement" & velocity are less than optimal. I've always felt that "stuff" WAS "movement" (mixed in with a little velocity).
I know this is me chiming in at the 11th hour and it's not a feasible change (and ultimately up to the developer), but I've always felt the attributes should be:
Control - directly correlates to the number of walks a pitcher allows
Velocity - pretty obvious
Movement - obvious as well, and should be on a per pitch basis, but not really feasible to do so
Command - the ability to SPOT pitches. It's one thing to be able to get a pitch over the plate and not give up a walk. What makes a pitch effective is the ability to throw it to the location the pitcher wants.
I always felt command of pitches was overlooked in the OOTP attributes.

I'm not seeing any pickup and release with prospects. I'm also not seeing as much minors toggling, though it's not gone 100%.
Skimming through there was one guy who was designated for assignment by his AA team and the same team received the player 3 days later. That isn't happening as often from what I can see.
One thing I don't like: I'd like to be able to click on an individual player and see every transaction he's ever had. I'm not seeing any catch and release at this point.

Especially for you JB:
My test sim ran 108 years. Here is how the HOF'ers break down by draft round. I was running an 8 team league, 25 round draft, and did not change hall of fame criteria.
HOF Pitching report
1st round draft picks: 33 of 64 (14 were first overall picks)
2nd round: 11
3rd round: 2
4th round: 2
5th round: 2
6th round: 2
7th round: 1
8th round: 1
10th round: 2
11th round: 1
13th round: 1
16th round: 2
20th round 1
112th round:1 (inaugural draft)
2 foreigners who weren’t drafted
HOF Batting report:
1st round draft picks: 65 of 103 (6 first overall picks)
2nd round: 9
3rd round: 5
4th round: 5
5th round: 2
7th round: 2
8th round: 1
9th round: 1
11th round: 1
15th round: 1
16th round: 2
17th round: 1
21st round: 1
23rd round: 1
57th round: 1 (inaugural)
4 foreigners who weren’t drafted
So 20 of the 108 first overall picks became HOF'ers.

As far as the draft goes, I think you'll find in real MLB, there are more busts. The problem is you don't get to draft Mike Piazza in the 62nd round. More of the players from the 25 rounds need to be hits.
I said problem, but I don't really mean it. Who the hell wants to draft 50 or 60 guys and sign another batch of undrafted guys every year? That'd be like a root canal. This is one place where I like that the draft isn't like real life. Make it more talented, make it so that a lot of the guys at least hang on in the low minors for a few years and not to the point I have to spend 6 weeks on the draft.

Anyways... until the preview forum is working for me all post my stuff here.
I'm greatly impressed by the game, I couldn't get into last year's version at all, this game just "feels" better from the start. Sim speed is amazing, I simmed two seasons of a fictional league in under 5 minutes. Laying down 10-30 years of history for fictional leagues is going to be a breeze now, in the old versions (pre SI) this process could take all day.
A couple of things... after my first season, once the playoffs ended all the teams fired their GMs, even the league champ.
Another thing, could someone change the name of the province of "Newfoundland and Labrador" to "Newfoundland." Yeah, I realize the province changed it's name, and it is correct within the game, but it doesn't fit in the text field, and it leads to city name being under the "City of Birth" title line.

Looking at anyone from the past 10 years probably doesn't tell us anything, as they have not played enough yet, but only Griffey and Rodriguez look like sure-thing HoF, with Chipper Jones a pretty near lock and Harold Baines with an outside shot at some point in the future.
I am actually alright with the 20 of 100 or so, though, because you have to consider that the drafts are compacted quite a bit into a manageabe number of rounds.

Swaggs,
Your study pretty much hit what I figured the anser would be. Most of the first overall picks make it to the show. Not a lot become hall of famers. But again, we are compressing the real MLB draft by over half. So I expect a lot of the first rounders are going to develop into decent players.
I have no issues with 20% of the HOF coming from first round picks.

He's not the only one who got a preview copy that hasn't pre-ordered the game, EF didn't and Troy probably didn't either. I think they had some sort of offer out there for anyone at some point.
No, I didn't pre order. Not sure what EF's comments will be, but unless I find something horrible in the next couple of days, I'm pretty set on ordering it. I'm actually having to tear myself away from the computer, which is always a good sign.
I'm sure there are going to be some things that pop up, but this is a fun game and I'm going to be dissapointed when the trial version runs out.
Looks like Duffy's marketing ploy worked.

I've scoured transactions on a bunch of player cards and not found any major problems. Guys are getting signed and released a bit around the end of their careers, but stars and solid players are being handled much more reasonably than what I saw in the demo last year and read about. There are still a few things that are suboptimal including the aforementioned lack of organization on the player's cards re: injuries, transactions, etc. Another thing which I just PM'd Markus about and I'm hopeful he can address, but I'm getting crashes as I get further into my career. It's about 100 years in, but fast simming isn't an option any longer because I'm getting a Microsoft C++ runtime error at the end of most years. However, when I'm really playing the game I'm sure it will take me a long time to get 100 years into a career (it has 200 years of history since I imported all of the "real history." and that won't stop me from buying.
Edited to add: No, I didn't preorder. I was firmly in the wait and see camp. I saw Marc's offer on here and sent him a PM.

I loaded the game Sunday at 930; will that hurt the amount of days I can play it? Or is it 5 days ending on Sunday?
One thing I noticed from the start was that when randomizing cities, you can get assigned the same cities. And while I know LA and NY has those options, in the pre-existing teams, it has their league next to it. Maybe make it possible where there are not two teams in the same league?

I don't really understand the point of randomizing cities. You end up with divisions that have teams scattered around the country, which isn't very realistic.

I'm in the "didn't preorder, has the preview" group as well. One thing I would say is that it seems to have a low number of bugs/quirks for a game that isn't set to be released for a bit.

One issue I just noticed, checking the stats this morning 86 years into the sim: at default settings, the game doesn't appear to be properly creating/valuing any Tony Gwynn type players. After 86 years, the 3,000-hit players are 20-30 HR guys at the very least, and most have 500+ homers for their careers. The lowest HR total of a 3,000 hit guy in my league is 385. He had 13 seasons of >20 HRs. Gwynn never hit more than 17, and only had 135 for his career. I don't know if singles hitters are declining too early, or what, but there are still guys in real life like Suzuki and Pierre, who pile up the hits, but don't hit for power.
Further evidence of this issue is that all six 240-hit seasons in my league were accompanied by at least 31 home runs, and that every single one of the 230-hit guys who hit LESS than 31 homers never played a full season after age 32. I'd say that contact-only hitters are declining too fast, or not valued enough by the AI teams, or something.
A typical example is a guy I'm looking at right now. He had a max of 20 homers from age 22-31, but hit over .3011 every season, inlcuding hitting .336 at age 31. with 11 HRs. However, he completely dropped off the map after that. He only got 226 ABs at age 32, despite still having 72 contact. It dropped to 64 the following year, an dhe only got 32 ABs.

More evidence that this may be a creation issue, combined with an AI issue: every .390+ batting average season (and there were 11 of them) was accompanied by at least 29 homers.

The AI player evaluation is using pretty modern formulas (developed by baseball prospectus), which indeed may lead to 'undervaluing' contact-only guys. But only from the traditional point of view, as in reality these guys are not really valuable. A .260/.350/.450 guy is more valuable than a .300/.330/.370 guy.
Maybe next year I'll add a toggle to enable a more traditional evaluation method.

Evaluation is only part of the issue here. It's a creation issue as well, it would appear. I'm not seeing any 80 contact, 20 power, 60 eye players. Plus, I'm not talking about .300/.330/.370. The guy I mentioned above was .336/.376/.431. Also, his overall numbers point to another issue, I think: hitters with very high contact but very bad eyes. This guy had a season where he hit .345, with 109 strikeouts, and only 24 walks. That's more than a little strange to me. And again, from looking around, this isn't isolated.

Anyway, I'll look into it :)That's good, but check for rarity. Like I said, in 86 years, I'm not seeing evidence that a Suzuki/Pierre/Freddy Sanchez type player is sticking around the league long enough to put up 2,500 hits. In fact, looking at the average leader board, it's very easy to spot the high contact/low power guys: they're the ones who are among the league leaders in career batting average, but only were in the league for 8-12 years or so. Here's another one: .320/.437/.451 at age 33, ratings only changed -8/0/+2 from age 33 to age 34, but he only got 103 ABs at age 34, then was released and never signed again, despite being 49/40/71. I'm thinking that the "Eye" rating isn't being valued enough. (All of this is with scouts turned off, of course.)

SD,
I wonder if hitter profiles have changed from the way we grew up, and therefore there aren't as many Tony Gwynn-type hitters floating around. While you named a few that are present today, I'd be willing to bet there aren't anywhere near the number we remember in the 80's.

I'd be curious to see what kinds of players are created in fictional leagues that run through the 60s, 70s, and 80s with era-correct modifiers in place. My suspicion is that unless the "eye" numbers are increased quite a bit for player creation in those years, you'll still see some guys created with some numbers that don't look right for that era.

Although I didn't realize it at the time, this was a huge issue/problem with OOTP a couple versions back. I didn't see it with my team, of course, but the AI was terrible about signing guys to big contracts, dumping them less than a year later (sometimes within weeks), and then another team would sign the same guy and the cycle would repeat.
Ironically, I realized what a huge issue it was by playing ITP, where I was the one being released/signed repeatedly at the end of my career.

Speaking of bloated contracts- it riled me last year that the game could make incredibly irresponsible financial decisons- e.g, signing a 37 year old SP to an 8 year 100 million dollar contract- and then release him the following month....but seemingly take no cap hit for this. Is this type scenario still prevalent (for anyone with a preview build who cares to look around)????

I'm glad that everyone who has their hands on the newest version of OOTP seems to enjoy it. If everything is implemented correctly, it should jump to the top of the baseball career text sim class - no easy feat, considering the competition.
In the interest of disclosure, I should say that I'm deeply engrossed in some other game (http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/showthread.php?t=56675), and probably won't buy this version for awhile, if ever.
But I do have a few questions & comments about the draft. First, I'd like to thank cougarfreak for posting his numbers on HOFers in his league.
I don't like the skew toward most of the very best players coming in the first two rounds. I think it's too extreme. For competitive balance purposes it's good (and probably good for the game overall), but for other purposes it's bad. Cutting the numbers in half and spreading them among the other rounds past two would feel more realistic to me.
And I also have some concerns about the 25-round amateur draft. OOTP used to have a 5-round draft, which I liked. I think such a long draft is bad for two reasons:
1) Realistically, there isn't much talent out there beyond the first few rounds, so you're either picking high-risk, low-reward projects or roster fillers. My time as a gamer is too valuable to fool around with people like that.
2) It invites "roster bloat" - either the minor league rosters get too big and players don't develop like they should, or the free agent pool is too big and hard to manage. In order to have a 25-round draft, there should be 25 players PER TEAM either retiring or being released. I assume the game handles that well, but I wonder how well I could handle a game that gives marginal prospects maybe two years for a look-see.
I'm assuming that (a) the number of players drafted is customizable and (b) I can hit the "computer pick the rest of these bums" button, so this isn't a huge deal.
And I agree with SkyDog's point that there should be some low-power, high average hitters in the game. They probably would need good eye skills these days, but they should be able to survive.

Since I don't have a preview copy, here's how I would do it:
The great majority of the 25 draftees play in rookie ball. I don't have the Association rules in front of me, but I could swear you can only play one year of rookie ball. If you excel or perform to standards, the next year you get moved up to Single A. If you don't, you're cut. Therefore, the turnover of the 25 draftees occurs in rookie ball, and you're not left with 45 guys on AA roster and 42 playing A ball.

This reminds me of one of the biggest problems I encountered when playing previous versions of OOTP: low level minor league teams would have almost 2x a normal sized roster. This would limit the time to develop prospects because you'd want to play your guys equally since you only had one "A/Rookie" level team. I gather that you can now customize how many minor league teams/levels exist in each universe so I hope this has been fixed.

Bah! I was ready to dig in to conversion and other goodies, but I can't get it installed. I keep getting an "error reading data folder, please re-install" message. If you choose to use "ghost" players (like the older versions of OOTP) then you can go back to the old 5 round amateur draft. But you are correct the number of rounds in the draft are indeed customizable. Also keep in mind if you have other leagues, particularly those who don't have drafts, then some of those free agents, will be signing with the other lower level leagues.
To answer your questions both a and b are correct.

Given what I've seen historically out of OOTP, unless something dramatic has changed, you're probably well under 2 gigs (in all current league files, not just logs & stuff). In relative terms, that's not much. I just hate seeing that much space being devoted to storage.
That's not a criticism of the game, just a personal obsession.

Yeah, but I love being able to click on the 2050 Dodgers and quickly hyperlink to any one of their games, any one of their player's cards, etc. I'll forgive that kind of storage space if it gives me that type of history. There are also options to save boxscores, news items, etc for only 2 years, 10 years, or not at all (as well as the forever option which is what I've chosen.)

Just some research I did at school today. Not many HOF'ers have actually been drafted (most were before the ammy draft), but here is the result I found at baseballreference.com today.
Hall of Famer Round Drafted
Tony Gwynn 3rd
Cal Ripken 2nd
Wade Boggs 7th
Ryan Sandberg 20th
Dennis Eckersley 3rd
Paul Molitor 1st
Gary Carter 3rd
Eddie Murray 3rd
Ozzie Smith 4th
Kirby Puckett 1st
Dave Winfield 1st
Carlton Fisk 1st
George Brett 2nd
Nolan Ryan 12th
Robin Yount 1st
Mike Schmidt 2nd
Reggie Jackson 1st
Johnny Bench 2nd
Also important to remember, the players I posted represent the best 165 players in my leagues history, which if you figure 25 new guys a year times 8 teams is 200 newbies a year. So you are looking at the best 165 of 20,000+ players. Also remember, I was able to do this 108 year sim in about 12 hours, so the game moves very quickly on my laptop (1.66 ghz dual core with 2 gigs of ram).
cougarfreak

And to answer a few other question regarding league size, my 108 year old league is 400 mb. That is saving box scores from all leagues (5 levels of minors, 2 8 team major leagues). Not deleting players who don't reach the majors, and last night I clicked for facegen to generate faces for my major leaguers only just to see if it worked ok.

Really appreciate it, thanks!
I know there are "ghost" players back into the game, ala v6.51, but I still might start out in the minors and work my way up - by the time I get there, I should have mostly all fictional players. Although, if it's like last year's, I guess if I purchase this game, I could start a historical career or something along those lines.
Ok Mizzou, here is my impression of managing a minor league team per a couple of sims I did today. First of all, let me say I could never play this way, it would drive me nuts to lose players whenever, etc. But from what I saw today, generally the AI GM will make player moves on the first of each month. You get a PM telling you who you've gained and lost. I'd say about 95% of the time, what you lost in terms of positions, you gained them back by the additions. I only saw one instance (in short season A), where I was left with 3 SP's, but I had 9 relievers, a couple with high endurance. I seemed to always have plenty of field position players, though I won't say with injuries things couldn't get dicey. A couple of times I noticed only 4 OF'ers on my roster. But all in all, I was never left "short" on players. Any other quesitons, let me know. I did one season at short A, and one at AA.

Meh. I put my head scout on scouting the opposing teams when he is idle but found that I dislike the reports all of the time. When I took off the send reports I still received them and I still did even after I cleared his jobs

So I can't load the preview..
"ootp2007.exe - Fatal Application Exit
Unable to open graphics. Make sure your screen resolution is 1024*768 and that your windows taskbar is not set to always remain on top."
Checked both - screen resolution is exactly 1024*768, and my windows taskbar is not set to always remain on top.
(I'd post on the preview forum, but I cannot access it...)

There will be a new preview build today which fixes this!

Sigh, I'm having installation issues as well. The game is installing all the appsdata files to my network drive (which has a "my documents" folder on it as well), but searching the local drive when starting up the game. I have no idea why the game would install one place and look someplace else. Since I licensed it and can't unlicense, I'm down to 4/5. Hopefully I'll be able to get some online league conversion stuff up soon.

Actually, I used my google skills to fix the problem; it works now that I've changed my default "My Documents" location. But thanks a ton!!

So I'm still not registered in the preview forum and I'm having the same problem with the taskbar/resolution causing the game not to start up. Do I follow the download link in the email for the newest build or do I need to get it from the preview forum? Thanks.

You need to email / PM me to get access to the preview forum.
As for the issue, a new build is about to go out to fix it

Thanks again!
Don't think I would play this way either.

So far I must say I like the game. The commish portal is pretty much something I've been begging to have for years. I'm tired of getting my sims interrupted by players stuck in DFA. Now I can set it to release anyone whose DFA time is up. I also get a report of every team's DFA players and how much time they have left...in one report. Not sure how the uploading of the file through the game will go, I'll have to test that tomorrow, along with the reports.
I'm wondering if Facegen changes will be exported. Like if a GM changes his uniform design, will that be exportable? Not sure about logos, since I don't think the game grabs them from the server, but that can be manually imported I suppose.
I'll save my comments on roster moves for tomorrow since I want to dig down deep and get some answers, but my early impression compared with last year's release is that my fun factor is way up.

Thanks Markus. The new preview build loaded perfectly.
I'm seeing strange things in lower levels. I've got a setup with the major leagues (and their related minors), and a fictional league similar to the Northern League. In the lower level fictional league I've set the "super star salary" to $50,000 (with all other salary settings to less and less) - but after a couple of seasons I'm seeing players signing contracts for $500,000 to $5,000,000, etc.
Teams are losing money on a regular basis.

Am I correct in assuming for an online league, when generating HTML I only need to generate history once a season (at the end)? Or do I need to do it every time in case it gets overwritten?
